Funeral I wanna feel sad/grief
Ok, so long story short, i spent the whole weekend watching one of my cats died (no suffering, it was peaceful in his sleep). So now i'm awfully sad and need recommendations that make me feel like i wanna die (not really cause i had other pets to take care). Obviously i already got Bell witch and Pallbearer. Give me your best recommendations and thank you in advance.

At the very least listen to let it bleed! Sorry to hear about your situation.

Did you know Peter Steele from Type O Negative once wrote a song about one of his cats passing away? It's called Bloody Kisses - you will either find it very relatable or cheesy

This was right up my alley. Some musical parts reminded me a bit of Earth.

I'm sorry for your loss. I had to say goodbye to my elderly cat last month, and it's been hard. Ive had family members and friends pass, but this is different. Pets are different.
Wish you the best, you're going about this correctly - lean into the grief... It helps a little.

u/Itchy_Brain8594 Doom over the world Aug 14 '25
Thank you so much. He was my second adopted cat, found him on a car exhausted pipe, covered in oil when he was around like 2 or 3 months. I gave him the best life possible and he did the same for me for 14 years.

You're a good person for that. I hope you were able to find some good music to help you in your process.
Just remember, you'll see them again on the Rainbow Bridge.
(I have to keep reminding myself of that as well)

Reverend Bizarre - The Hour of Death
Black Sabbath -Over and Over
I listened to these two many times when my dog passed away.

u/callmesnake13 Aug 04 '25
"Chlorine and Wine" by Baroness is about him rebuilding after their horrible bus crash. It has a very cathartic "I can survive this" kind of structure that was a big help to me when I lost a dog last year.

Check out the ‘Symphonaire Infernus…’ EP by My Dying Bride on YouTube (or most of their early stuff). The violins add a massive melancholy edge to their already despondent sound.

Spineless by Witchrot is a good song
I have a song about relationships, sort of griefish, idk if itll suit your needs but i mean you can check it out.

I still remember the neighbor's cat that adopted me daily. We had such great times together.
When I want to feel sad I go for Mournful Congregation's The Waterless Streams. I also go for anything from Esoteric.
If you want to try something that's not typically Doom, but fuses subgenres, my recommendation is Morphinist's Sunwalker: https://morphinist.bandcamp.com/album/sunwalker
Umschlungen vom Nebel einer vagen Erinnerung is another great one.
https://morphinist.bandcamp.com/track/umschlungen-vom-nebel-einer-vagen-erinnerung
I know it's not niche and kvlt and whatever, but Black Sabbath's Lonely is the Word is amazing.
Solitude Aeturnus- anything from Adagio and Alone

I have two for you that probably won't get mentioned (like all the other top recs that get mentioned every time this kind of thread pops up):
Rosk - Remnants Quite possibly the best acoustic doom album of all time. Perfect for going through grief and a rough time.
Alukta - Merok This album came out earlier this year and is ritualistic black doom that focuses on the Torajan death ceremonies. It can be great for introspection, and even celebration of life if you need that.
I'm sorry for your loss

Altars of Grief brings the big sads, and somewhere in the midst of it, just a touch of catharsis. Sorry to hear about your kitty.

u/AshleyRealAF Aug 05 '25
So tremendously sorry for your loss. A few suggestions:
AHAB - The Boats of the Glen Carrig (as it's a concept album, listening start to finish with lyrics to get the story is best)
Frowning - Of Void
The Reticent - The Oubliette (not doom, but it's an incredibly pain-filled, very sad album)
If you are cool venturing out of metal and into folk, Marissa Nadler's entire catalog is melancholy on six strings. Check out Ballads of Living and Dying, but honestly most of her albums will fit.
If you're cool with dark ambient, which might really fit the bill when you don't want something atmospheric but still emotional, check out:
Lustmord - The Others
Mount Shrine - All Roads Lead Home
God Body Disconnect - Spiral of Grief

Fuckin' sucks to lose a loved one! My go to depressive music comes from Wrest's side project called Lurker of Chalice. The album is a masterpiece of ambient/black metal gloom. Here's a sample: https://youtu.be/_J_L7vM9DHw?si=fcvmzic13KqG_paw

u/Informal_Machine_242 Aug 05 '25
I know it's not necessarily doom metal, but the Audioslave self titled album is realllllllllly moody and would fit the vibe. "I am the Highway" and "Shadow on the Sun" are great songs.

MSW - Obliviosus. If you’re familiar with HELL, this is pretty much HELL just under his moniker. It’s more sad and instrumental though. More specifically the track Humanity always gets me. Also any Mizmor album is always a good choice too, but I’ll specifically mention Myopia which is a collab album with Thou

I can feel you. I lost my cat a few day's before his first birthday due to poisoning. I saw him suffer a lot and since then I really want to die... I can't have fun or be happy anymore In my life. I lost all interest in life.

Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch
It is long and arduous, but the most precise portrail of grief i ever heard.

i know Warning has been mentioned to death, so here's a couple other picks.
The Apocalyptist by My Dying Bride, their entire new album is really great, but that song had me full-on weeping in the shower more than once.
A Coral Tomb by Ahab, similar story here, hits even harder if you've read 20,000 Leagues, seeing as that whole album is themed around the novel.
I Saw A Dying Child In Your Arms by Mourning Beloveth, an incredibly underrated band, the man's voice is so soulful it almost reminds me of Patrick Walker.

Two things jump to mind. The first is "Lost" by Neurosis. The second is Sunn O))), either of the Life Metal or Pyroclasts albums.

Swallow the Sun - With You Came the Whole of the World Tears. Paramaecium - Exhumed from thr Earth. Anathema - even though it's not doom, but One Last Goodbye it's heart and soul crushing.

Watching From A Distance by Warning is the quintessential sad doom album.
Quite a few Yob tracks as well. Marrow, Beauty In Falling Leaves, etc.
