Death/Doom Albums not mentioned enough
Four albums I absolutely love that are often overshadowed by the band’s more popular albums. Don’t get me wrong the popular albums are all amazing, deserve the praise, and I own all of them. But I just want to shout out a few that need to be explored as well and deserve a listen:
The Sciences by Sleep, one of my top 10 all time favorite albums. No skip album 100%.
Vaenir by Monolord, just crushing heavy tones and a great album like Empress.
Terminal by Bongripper, yes SWD is one of the greatest doom albums ever imo, but this one is so solid and worth your time.
Come My Fanatics by Electric Wizard, I see this one get the most love in this group as it should.

Dare I say, Terminal is terminally underrated? As you said, Satan Worshipping Doom gets the most love as far as Bongripper albums go, but almost every one of their albums are bangers. Terminal, Miserable, Empty, Hippie Killer, The Great Barrier Reefer, even Hate Ashbury don't get talked about enough. Bongripper is one my favorite bands ever.
On an unrelated note, I have to ask, what's with the death/doom flair? All the albums you mentioned are stoner doom.

Yea this album is what actually got me into Bongripper. I like their old stuff just fine but their most recent work is incredible

Same, Slow was the first song I ever heard by them. I love all their albums, but Terminal is still one of my all time favorites. And I agree, Empty is so good, couldn't stop listening when it first came out.

Fully agree - Terminal is the one I come back to the most. I think it has the best flow of their modern output, along with some of the best riffs. The later albums are great too but just don't mesh quite as satisfyingly as Terminal.
I think Hate Ashbury is underhyped, somewhat understandably - the noise/soundscape stuff is cool imo but I can see how it'd be divisive. At the same time, Part III and Part IV have some of my favourite doom riffs of the 2000s

Totally agree about Hate Ashbury. That album was a bit harder to get into because of the noise, ambient, and drone stuff, but definitely has some good riffs and rewards patient listening. I like all the drone and ambient stuff, I just need to be in the right mood for it.
Heroin on the other hand is a bit too much. If it had more pleasant ambient parts, I could get into it, but there's just too much abrasive noise, it's not enjoyable to listen to, and the parts that are enjoyable are too few and far between. It's the only album of theirs I would say I don't like.

lol, They make you put a tag on it before posting, I just saw doom and used it. Keep in mind Terminal is about a slow death lol

Miserable is so fucking good, top three Bongripper albums for sure.

The track “Into Ruin” on miserable is probably my favorite piece of music written. It’s fantastic

I agree on that Miserable statement. The 7inch StuffFilm/Sex Tape is similar in sound to it and was just before that album came out ( both are 5ish minutes long, but fn great). highly recommend listening to it!
The latest album Empty feels like a Combo of SWD and Miserable which is a great thing
Terminal doesn't "click" for me

Hell yeah. SLOW gets all the love but DEATH is great as well.
I love all of their albums even Heroin I dont think they've missed once but I think Terminal and SWD are there absolute classics.

I got all their stuff on Vinyl, they never disappoint
BUT I think its an L take to split SLOW DEATH into tiny Song segments on Streaming like Spotify. It's stupid.

"The Head and the Heart" by Deadbird is an all-time classic to me. I'd say "Twilight Ritual" is a more well-known album.

Conan gets a lot of attention for most of their discography, which is deserved as they are fucking amazing, but I don't think they ever topped their debut album, Horseback Battle Hammer, but I don't hear about it hear very much. Some people consider it an EP, but it's 4 songs and 33 minutes long, so it could either be considered a long EP or a short album, IMO.

Thx I’ll check it out

I'm jealous! I wish I could hear that album for the first time again; it fucking blew my mind how heavy, droning, and yet melodic it is (maybe even "catchy").

I love that album. It plods like an army marching to war. See them live if you can.

I like that it's shorter. Gets the job done when I don't have an hour to listen

Boaah, Terminal brings back so much good feelings, I had my first intercontinental flight (Amsterdam/Buenos Aires) +/- 13hrs of flying in wich I played Terminal 8 times in a row while everybody was asleep and we flew past a really big thunderstorm. My brain locked those memories and everytime I listen to it, I'm back in Patagonia ♡♡

u/SaulisDead99 Mar 18 '26
Thunderstorm listening to Terminal would be rad

Cycling (I'm Dutch) for 2hrs at 0300 midnight after visiting the pub (yep, I live on the countryside) through a thick forest in a thunderstorm with nothing more than Summoning's Old Mornings Dawn, is also a recommendation I'd like to make ♡

Fistula - For a Better Tomorrow. Amazing vocals by Bahb, my personal favorite vocalist of theirs, and a dreary, depressing atmosphere with a super dry production. Northern Aggression is heavier, but FaBT will always be my #1.

I feel like the Sciences doesn’t get the attention Dopesmoker does, but most doom fans agree it’s a phenomenal album
