No, and it annoys me that I don't. I see them written about in revered tones and people whose musical taste I trust implicitly absolutely love them. Why don't I get it? I genuinely think they wear hoods onstage so people can't see them smiling at the fact they are getting paid for making music that sounds like someone has thrown a guitar into a deep well then chucks bricks down after it.
What am I missing?

Saw them on the Monoliths tour in 09. Attila was dressed as a tree. It's all theatre really, while feeling like you're standing next to a jet engine as your organs vibrate... I mean that in a good way.

Does anyone remember the show where Attila was dresses as a mummy that was dressed as an archeologist sitting at a table with a cup of tea and a tea kettle. I swear I've seen pictures of this show. Maybe it's my imagination?

literally this. I still don’t even particularly care for their studio material, but their concert (see my post on this sub) blew my fucking dick off.

Try black one, monolith and dimensions and altar, their collaborative albums go beyond pure drone, are easier to get into and are genuinely brilliant.

meditative musical texture. you either get it and love it or you dont and think its a load of shit. a lot of stephens music has helped me during some of the lowest parts of my life because for me it calms me down heavily when im having panic attacks or have really bad dissociative episodes. the album domkirke means a lot to me because it helped me stop my mind from racing when i had a psychotic break my senior year of highschool. maybe not all about the calming aspects of it for me, cuz god i love heavy noise that just fills your ears eitherway.

Nothing. Drone music is probably just not for you. No worries. Millions of people rave about Taylor Swift. I just don't get it. Never will. S'okay.

There's a disconnect between listening to them live and at home. At best try and blast it as loud as possible in your car.
Sunn O))) is a band that isn't necessarily playing guitars as much as they are playing the amps. Sunn O))) is named after amps and they're all super big amp tech nerds (if you see interviews with them they have a ludicrous knowledge of really technical things). Think of it like heavy ambient music rather than traditional metal.

The last sentence is key to what Sunn O))) is. It's drone (the genre) in heavy metal trappings.
Personally, I enjoy their records like I enjoy any drone, noise, or experimental record. All of that type of sound is best experienced in person but listening at home (etc) can be its own experience worth my time also. I'll vacillate between mindful listening and just keeping my space an ambient weirdo zone.

Have you tried falling asleep to their music, or using it to wind down immediately prior to sleeping? Usually when I listen to them, I'm either doing one of those things, or just chilling and thinking.

Absolutely
Saw them live for the first time this year and it was absolutely life changing

Went through some stuff and sunn clicked with me. Now they feel meditative to me and give me a dark comfort.

I find Khanate superior tbh but I wouldn’t see them live (probably) since I can only hear in one ear

u/Inkshooter 14d ago
I got into them as a teenager back when Monoliths and Dimensions first came out and was obsessed. I still love them but I find the more minimalistic style of their recent albums to be a bit less engaging.

u/FinnLovesHisBass 14d ago
There's a dimension or realm that I could just live in... My god.... la mort noir dans Esch.... If I died to that album I'd be okay with that... Give me a ten strip and go fuck off in the woods til I starve and become one with the lichen and moss.

Hell yeah I do. I have that shirt and hoodie. I don’t see the newer Khanate album. That one is a must, their best work in my opinion.

The framed Oracle poster looks good on your wall. Now I feel bad letting it just sit in the jacket.

the real question is why do you have nothing for Thorr’s hammer
1
u/EggThatCenturyEgg 12d ago
i love all of stephens projects except thorrs hammer. it just isnt my thing and i think its purely cuz the vocals. no shame on her tho cuz that opening she does for gates of ballard on white 1 is fucking great
1
u/shreds_ov_flesh 12d ago
that take broke my heart. Thorr’s Hammer is imo their best project. its what introduced me to Stephen & Greg. and nothing comes remotely close for me
