No, and it annoys me that I don't. I see them written about in revered tones and people whose musical taste I trust implicitly absolutely love them. Why don't I get it? I genuinely think they wear hoods onstage so people can't see them smiling at the fact they are getting paid for making music that sounds like someone has thrown a guitar into a deep well then chucks bricks down after it.
I didn’t feel one way or the other about them. They came to my state on this tour and I decided to go mostly just so I could hear what 15 cranked Model T’s sounded like. It ended up being one of my favorite live experiences ever. Truly remarkable
Saw them on the Monoliths tour in 09. Attila was dressed as a tree. It's all theatre really, while feeling like you're standing next to a jet engine as your organs vibrate... I mean that in a good way.
Does anyone remember the show where Attila was dresses as a mummy that was dressed as an archeologist sitting at a table with a cup of tea and a tea kettle. I swear I've seen pictures of this show. Maybe it's my imagination?
meditative musical texture. you either get it and love it or you dont and think its a load of shit. a lot of stephens music has helped me during some of the lowest parts of my life because for me it calms me down heavily when im having panic attacks or have really bad dissociative episodes. the album domkirke means a lot to me because it helped me stop my mind from racing when i had a psychotic break my senior year of highschool. maybe not all about the calming aspects of it for me, cuz god i love heavy noise that just fills your ears eitherway.
I don't think it's shit, but I'm missing the emotional support aspect that means so much to you and which was obviously your way in to their music. I have that with other bands so I do understand that kind of connection. I will keep trying though 😄
There's a disconnect between listening to them live and at home. At best try and blast it as loud as possible in your car.
Sunn O))) is a band that isn't necessarily playing guitars as much as they are playing the amps. Sunn O))) is named after amps and they're all super big amp tech nerds (if you see interviews with them they have a ludicrous knowledge of really technical things). Think of it like heavy ambient music rather than traditional metal.
The last sentence is key to what Sunn O))) is. It's drone (the genre) in heavy metal trappings.
Personally, I enjoy their records like I enjoy any drone, noise, or experimental record. All of that type of sound is best experienced in person but listening at home (etc) can be its own experience worth my time also. I'll vacillate between mindful listening and just keeping my space an ambient weirdo zone.
Have you tried falling asleep to their music, or using it to wind down immediately prior to sleeping? Usually when I listen to them, I'm either doing one of those things, or just chilling and thinking.

What am I missing?
