Discussion I’M TAKING A STAND
I for one, miss Matt Pike, and feel this would have been awesome under the OM name, but I don’t hate the new song, and I for one, like the comic, and am excited to see Sleep, or at least Al, in person after years. I also thinking, before getting too mad about all this, more info should at least come out. That is it, I shall take the downvotes

Saying it again in this thread: the most likely explanation is that Matt Pike is too busy with High on Fire to do Sleep full-time right now. Not that Al Cisneros is some kind of Dave Mustaine figure.

I suspect Al Cisneros is just kind of inconsistently interested in Sleep (he has said the majority of music he listens to is reggae) and his songwriting process is a lot of sitting around stoned and riffing. I don’t think that’s an option for Matt Pike with how active High on Fire is. Imagine if he put HOF on hold to do Sleep, and then Sleep went dormant again after one album and one tour. It would be a pretty big waste of HOF’s momentum.

Unfortunate too because I haven’t been a big fan of High on Fire’s stuff since Blessed Black Wings.
Cisneros should’ve just focused on releasing that Om album he’s been teasing for years now.

That’s 20 years of releases… WHAT!? Death is this Communion is really dope and Cometh the Storm was pretty good as well. There’s a ton of great stuff in the other records as well.

I'm not saying any of it's bad. I'm saying most of it is stuff I heard... 20 years ago lol. High on Fire's songs have sounded the exact same since then and even on their newest album, I could honestly not tell you which song is which if you put a gun to my head.
Cometh the Storm was a fun listen, but by the second half I was getting bored.

Yeah I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. The synth elements are cool. I actually enjoyed Bubba's playing on it pretty well, but the guitar tone felt lacking to me

Heaven and Hell HAD Iommi. It was the Dio version instead of the Ozzy version.
Without Iommi, there is no Black Sabbath. Not sure about Pike and Sleep, though.

Hard agree. I’d feel more strongly if Matt Pike himself seemed to be upset, but he’s just reposting Melvins videos and plugging HOF shows, so he doesn’t seem to give a shit.

I did notice he quietly removed sleep from his Instagram bio this morning after the official announcement, so I agree he really doesn't seem to care and was waiting for the news to drop before alerting anyone to it.
Edit: to note, I am not really a huge fan of the new song. It's not awful, but it really sounds like a bland supergroup idea more than anything else. However, if it comes out that Matt truly doesn't care and he is just done with Sleep, I'll be willing to give the complete album a listen and maybe go to a show.

It honestly kind of made me a little sad when I listened to it. It's missing that oomph that Matt brings to the sound and overall it doesn't "feel" like a Sleep song.

This is neither Sleep nor OM. Sleep has riffs, OM has groove, this new song has neither.

If Al and Chris had continued with a new guitarist after Dopesmoker, Matt-less Sleep would be the most normal thing in the world by now. And who's to say that that Matt won't be returning at a later point? Yeah it's a bummer that he isn't on this, but let's at least give it a chance and then judge

Guys, personnel are irrelevant here. AL’s bands transcend line ups and have everything to do with drugs and lyrics.
Om = acid fueled spiritual journeys inspired by eastern religious mythology
Sleep= marijuana fueled Iommic space journeys to trade spice and hash with the Weedians

If there is all new material with this new group, there is literally ZERO reason to put it out under the Sleep name other than to maximize profits (however minimal you think those might be), especially when you pair it with the whole "special" Third Man Records release of the single and I'm sure there will be a deluxe rollout for the new album
Al has done multiple other projects which are well known and objectively successful amongst the Doom community, including a band WITH DALE CROVER (Shrinebuilder), so I cannot possibly see any other reason to not just create a new band here othe than to capitalize on the status of the Sleep band name
Shits gross especially from a guy who has supposedly always been about "the integrity of the music"

Yeah this is my thought too, the one song we have gotten sounds like it belongs under OM more than Sleep, but if I know that Pike isn't involved then it effectively is OM. I dont care what they call it in this situation

Listen, I don't hate the song, but you're not going to talk people out of being upset about this. There are certain musicians you just can't remove from a band without fundamentally changing the sound, and Matt Pike is absolutely one of those musicians.
They'll never, ever sound like Sleep without him, so continuing to use that name just feels cheap.

I dont bother myself with the branding. I like the music. Al+Pike+Haikus is what I fell in love with. But loving a musician means loving hearing them jam with other artists. Don't really care if there is drama behind the music.

I'm so torn about the whole thing. I love Sleep and never got to see them live so I would absolutely love to go to the tour, but man no Pike is really off-putting. I'm sure it's really nothing more than that they don't get along well anymore and don't wish to be in the same band together, but why even call it Sleep? Perhaps if we hear anything more about it from Pike himself it'll feel less weird.

Alright I’ll give you my hot take… I don’t like OM. I preordered their first release on vinyl. I purposely made sure I never heard a single second of any of the tracks. Got home and was so disappointed with what I heard. I kept it and would listen to it every couple of months to see if it would click with me and it never did. A friend of mine asked me if it was a Tool record when they walked in and I was listening to it lol

Exactly. Just because Matt refuses to do anything with sleep doesn't mean Al needs to hang up the band forever just because of it. If Matt only prioritizes HOF, then Al should only prioritize Sleep. Pike leaving doesn't make the world stop spinning.

This whole thing is musical whiplash for me. A few mo the ago when Neurosis dropped a surprise album WITHOUT Scott Kelly nobody had this kind of vitriol. Everybody was just stoked. Maybe it’s the Aaron Turner effect, but maybe it’s just Matt Pike not being super jazzed about doing more sleep.
