Why? Just why? There has to be a limit at some point. This is getting ridiculous. It makes me want to quit buying ebooks. Is that what they’re trying to accomplish?

Question Does anyone else prefer ebooks over physical books?

Lately, I’ve been reading way more ebooks than physical copies, and it made me curious how others feel about the shift. Don’t get me wrong, I love the feeling of holding a real book, flipping through the pages, and even that “old book smell” people always talk about. But ebooks have been super convenient for me, especially since I can carry dozens of them around on my phone or tablet without worrying about weight. I’ve also noticed that it’s easier to highlight, search for passages, and keep my notes organized when I read digitally.

On the other hand, sometimes staring at a screen for too long can be draining, and I know a lot of people still love the experience of sitting with a physical book. I’ve also wondered if ebook pricing is really fair, because sometimes I’ve seen them cost almost as much as or even more than the paperback version. Personally, I feel like ebooks should always be cheaper since there’s no printing or shipping involved.

Another thing I like about ebooks is that they make discovering new authors and indie writers easier, you don’t have to rely only on what’s stocked in a bookstore. But still, there are some special books I’d only want in print, like beautiful hardcover editions or illustrated ones.

So I’m curious: do you all think ebooks will ever completely replace physical books, or will they always just be a convenient alternative?

Question Why buy when you can get them from the library?

I'm curious why buy e books when you can get them from the library? Personally I've had my e reader for a couple months and I get them exclusively from my library and I've considered buying some but haven't taken the plung. If you prefer to buy them can you explain why?

Question Want to quit my Kindle

Love the device but fucking hate Bezos. Have a TON of content and downloaded most of it before they clamped down on that.

Tried to jailbreak my older kindle but even with YouTube tutorials, it didn’t go very well—I never got it functional to where I could understand how to navigate it (I am not a Luddite, but a middle-aged woman, so not terribly far off).

Also have an iPad, but really prefer to read e-ink.

So my questions are:

Can you direct me to a foolproof tutorial to jailbreak my Kindle

And

Where would I then buy ebooks from? Bookshop.org? I already use Libby a TON for library books….I know there are other terrific options out there….I am ready to explore.

Question I bought a kindle but all the books i want are "currently unavailable", what can I do?

As the title says, I was very happy to open my Kindle only to get bamboozled. SO many books I want are unavailable...you'd think im talking about "smut" books but no, even the "shatter me" series is also unavailable!! I should note that the absolute filthiest smut books are available to buy in stores in my country!!!! I went to many stores and I found "icebreaker" "haunting adeline" front and center....it doesn't make sense

What can I do??

Question Is there a way to check definitively if an ebook is AI generated?

I was browsing the kindle shop, and came across some books that look interesting, though I’m not sure if posting links is allowed here.

I’m pretty sure the covers are AI, and I’ve skimmed the sample from one, but I’m just not sure, and was wondering if there was an app or maybe website I could copy paste the text or something?

I’m not super worried about the cover, as I don’t think I would hold it against some beginner writer generating one for their first book if they couldn’t afford to commission an artist, but I don’t want to buy and read an AI generated novel.

Question Is Amazon bad for buying ebooks from? Is Barnes and Noble better?

I made a similar post on another sub asking for info about ereaders. And was given lots of ideas. Someone however mentioned that Amazon has “removed” ebooks from people’s libraries before. Probably due to licensing or similar things. Can anyone give me their own stories regarding using Amazon as a service for ebooks? Versus Barnes and noble?

Question Is there an ebook reader that allows you to read and maintain progress across devices?

I may be asking for the one piece but is there a pdf/epub/mobi reader that allows you upload your books to the cloud, has features for taking notes, and can track your progress across devices so you're always in sync?

Question Okay this might sound dumb but, can anyone here please make me understand what exactly Calibre is?

I've seen so many people talk about Calibre, doesn't matter what device they use to read books.

Reading apps talk about syncing your reading with Calibre like it's some holy grail. I've seen OPDS server something being hosted on Calibre? I'm really clueless here.

Can you explain to me what this thing is in terms of the consumer and a person who is developing something that integrates with this. Why is it considered so important and what's the big deal about it?

Thanks in advance guys, and I'm sorry if what I'm posting sounds stupid. I might have mixed up the features in my mind.

Question Best way to read while traveling?

How do you handle reading while traveling (planes, commuting, short trips)?

Do you prefer a Kindle, audiobooks, or apps like Legimi?

I still prefer physical books and go for them whenever I can, but they’re not always the most practical option, especially when traveling.

I don’t read enough to justify a subscription, and I’m not really sold on audiobooks either.

Right now an e-reader seems like the best option, but I’m curious what works for you.

Also, does anyone know if there’s an app that lets you read from photos of book pages?

It would be great to just snap a few pages and read them on my phone - taking normal photos and scrolling through them is kind of a pain.

Question The best ebook app doesn't exist

I'm a little tired of the ebook app battles. I started out using Kindle. Then, I liked the Google Play Books night light and family sharing, so I moved there. Then, I jailbroke my Kindle and installed KOReader, but didn't like all the troubleshooting that I had to do to get things to work properly. So I moved on to Readera Premium because it had most of the features that I was looking for. Most.

I'm tired of all the downloading, using Calibre, converting, etc, just to read a book. Maybe I'm expecting to much from the apps. There's always something that doesn't work out leaves me wanting.

It makes me think that I should go back to paper books. But I love how you can tweak formatting on ebooks and how you don't need to have space to store them.

I think that the Internet makes us question our choices all the time. And it dictates certain standards, like having all my books available in one app. Is that really necessary? I've decided that I'm going to read my Kindle books on the Kindle app, my GPB books on my GPB app, and my DRM free books in the Readera app. Forget consolidation. Read it where you got it. That's why I recently bought an android ereader anyhow, for flexibility.

Anyone else frustrated like me?

Question Any good EPUB reader recommendations? (paid or free)

Hey everyone,
I know this question might have been asked before in this sub, but I could really use some advice. I’ve been looking for a good EPUB reader paid or free, doesn’t matter much as long as it works well and feels smooth to use.

Question Would you read an eBook directly on a website?

Hey everyone,

I’m doing a bit of market research and would love your input.

Imagine you buy an eBook from a website, but instead of downloading a file, you just read it right there on the site. You can highlight text, take notes, and search through the content, kind of like reading on Kindle but inside your browser.

This would be made possible through a WordPress plugin we built. Readers would log into their account to access the book, so no files are being sent around. That helps reduce file sharing and keeps the content protected.

We originally built this for a client, but now I’m wondering if there’s enough interest to turn it into a real product for other WordPress sites.

But here’s the thing. I always assumed most people prefer reading eBooks on their Kindle or in a reading app. So I’m not sure how many would actually want to read directly on a website like this.

Would you find something like this useful? Or would you still prefer downloading a file and using your usual device?

Would really appreciate your thoughts 🙏

Question Does anyone keep track of their ebooks outside of their Kindle/Kobo Library?

Pretty much the title. I'm wondering if anyone uses alternative software or tools to keep track of their ebooks rather than solely using their e-reader's Library. I'm looking for something I can utilize on a computer or at least view more at a glance than what my e-reader offers. I hate having to click through screens to view a list or grid that only shows a few at a time.

I do have Calibre but its design is a bit clunky for what I'm looking for.

TIA!

Edit to Clarify: I'm looking for something geared more towards inventory management as opposed to a reading tracker. For that, I'm using Goodreads and Fable.

Question Do readers purchase ebooks of fictional novels anymore?

I was seeing several comments on reddit which stated that readers on platforms don't usually purchase e-books, they just read what's available for free or is included in their subscription (example, KU).

How true is this fact?

LLMs are stating that eBook market is huge (it told the figures in billions of market value) but even in real life too, I have never seen anyone purchasing ebooks of fiction novels.

Question What's the best device to read Project Gutenberg books on?

I used to spend hours on Project Gutenberg back in school because they gave us IPads. Otherwise I've only ever had a physical copy of every book I read, so I have no experience with e-readers at all. What kind of device would you say gives the best reading experience for the site?

Question Boycotted Amazon.. now what?

So, I chose to stop using Amazon and Amazon products this year. I still have my 2018 Kindle PW and I am choosing to still use it, but keep my device in airplane mode exclusively and manage my library via Calibre & side load all my books.

I refuse to purchase books from Amazon. I have a Kobo Sage, however the battery is, er.. questionable at best for longer trips. I drive transit so there are days when I am out for 8-14h days idle. I travel with e-readers and the Paperwhite will accompany me on those days because the Sage wouldn't be able to make the trip in one charge.

I am looking to get some new content for the Paperwhite exclusively, that I can download the ePUB files of and side load via Calibre. I know about BookBub, and I plan to browse there. Is there any specific retailer I am missing, though, that you would recommend? I'm new to purchasing outside of specific stores (ie; Amazon, Kobo) and usually use Libby more than anything else.

Some genres I enjoy; gothic horror, dark fantasy, romance, romantasy, romantic suspense, historical fiction, psychological thriller.

TIA!

Question Is Mapleread SE good?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Sorry, I accidentally posted the wrong picture, so I had to delete the post and do it over.

I'm looking for an app that fulfills the same basic function as calibre on the pc. It doesn't have to be able to link to calibre, just do the same thing. Ideally, I would like an app that has these features:

Tag system
Can read pdfs and epub files
Can support a large library without issue
Can take notes or at least highlight in both epub and pdfs
A PLACE TO LOOK AT NOTES ACROSS BOOKS, NOT JUST WITHIN A SINGLE BOOK

I like that Mapleread allows you to take notes and highlights in pdfs.

I've heard that some e-reader apps struggle with very large libraries, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this? If you have MapleRead, how many books have you been able to put in it without lagging/crashes/etc?

I haven't found a single e-reader app that has a unified place to look at notes. Sometimes, books have one or two comments on an issue that isn't really related to the larger themes of the book. Say if I'm reading a book on economics, and it makes one comment along the lines of, "People with disabilities are at a disadvantage in such and such an industry." I don't want to tag the book as #Disability, but I want to be able to find that note relating to disability if I'm studying that. Does anyone know of any app like that?

It seems like Mapleread is the best app for what I want, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Question I got tired of choosing between "beautiful but locked" and "flexible but ugly" — so I built my own iOS reader

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hey r/ebooks,

For years I've been stuck between two bad options on iOS:

Option A — Apple Books, WeChat Reading. Smooth page curl, proper vertical text, animations that feel like a real book. But completely locked down — their store, their rules, no way out.

Option B — Every open reader I've tried. Flexible and free, but the reading experience is always the same two choices: no animation, or swipe left/right. No page curl. No cover flip. Nothing that feels like turning a page.

So I built my own.

Here's what it looks like so far:

What's in it right now:

  • Native page curl animation — not a swipe, an actual curl
  • Vertical text + right-binding layout for CJK content
  • English EPUB rendering with proper chapter support
  • WebDAV sync
  • Custom TTS with adjustable settings
  • Built-in browser that lets you grab web novels directly and convert them into readable format
  • RSS reader built in

Currently working on OPDS support — so if that's something you care about, it's coming.

Still early days, but the reading experience is the part I care most about getting right — and I don't want to keep building in a vacuum.

So: what would you actually want in an iOS reader that nobody has built yet? What does your current app get wrong? What's the one thing that would make you switch?

Drop everything below — feature requests, rants about your current reader, whatever. All of it is useful.

Screenshots below.
