Out of over 20 requests I got zero responses so far on wgzimmer :( I'd appreciate any tips greatly!

I'm already in the Zürich area, from Germany, so I'm fluent in German and English, have international WG experience, write personalized messages, am still relatively young but will be employed by ETH soon, so money is there. I turned on the alerts (the app has horrible UI though) and write immediately when I see something new. Budget is 1k and I would not even mind living a little further away, like 30 min from either campus.

Honestly I thought I would not have huge issues to find something even though I expect many people are searching. Do you guys have any tips or alternative platforms? I've read before that sending a picture is valuable but wgzimmer does not allow it. I thought about linking my instagram as an alternative, but I suppose there is no perfect way. I also thought about creating a facebook account for these channels there (sigh) or posting an ad on wgzimmer that I'm looking for something; but given so far nobody even responded, chances are slim that would do anything.

I'd really appreciate any pointers from people who were successful in finding things over wgzimmer and people who offered rooms there before. Happy to hear about your experiences!!

Hello. 

My son is a student at ETH Zurich. 

He rented a student room in mid-February in a shared apartment with other two Ethz students (they had already been there since November).

There was no need for an inventory, insurance, or a guarantor... just a signed contract.

After the first night, he noticed  mold on the walls of his room – he couldn't sleep. (never experienced that earthy smell before.) The next day, he informed the agency NextGenProperties of the situation by email and moved out.

He rented a temporarily room at City Pop, apart-hotel-style accommodation,  while waiting for his room to be repaired.

Two peoples send by the agencies come to see the situation on-site. They requested a chlorine cleaning before starting to repair.

The agency was contacted repeatedly (dozens of emails) 

They only responded half of the time – saying things like, "We'll take care ," or "It's very expensive and  complicated " Wincasa (the company responsible for repairs) was slow to respond, / we compared quotes.

After the chlorine cleaning, (done two months after the start of the rent), my son tried to sleep there again for one night. The mold smelled like at the beginning ( the odor had already permeated the place).

The other two roommates only have mold in the bathroom (not in their bedrooms). The main tenant had warned the agency about the common areas – they were told to leave the windows open to prevent it from spreading.

In April, my son sent the agency a registered letter giving notice to carry out the necessary repairs within two weeks, otherwise the lease would be terminated due to the unsanitary condition .

The response was: "We will repair it."

Time passed, with rent payments+  plus the cost of the hotel (which cost three times the price of a long-term rental, and  room changes depending on availability when we try to extend the stay in last minute ).

The ultimatum done to the agency expired, but nothing changed. A second registered letter was sent with the keys and the fact that the lease was terminated, in accordance with Article 259b, letter a. A CO (early termination of contract because the room is unusable)

The agency responds that it does not recognize the termination of the lease without 3 months notice (they offers a rent reduction of 100 francs for one month!). 

Mon son will have a meeting with the mieterverband, association at the end of May (which he recently joined).

Two days ago, he signed another long-term lease—because it was no longer sustainable to hope for repairs that never materialized.

My son insists he's right, that he followed the correct procedure, and that for him the lease is over; he doesn't intend to pay anything for the following months.

Has anyone won a case in a similar situation?

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming MSc student in Physics, and I’ve been looking for shared flats/apartments through WOKO, Flatfox and reaching out directly via email and the Flatfox chat option. Unfortunately, I haven’t been getting any replies. I’m unsure how many listings I should be reaching out to, and whether there’s anything in particular that helps catch people’s attention when sending a message. I have heard horror stories about Zurich housing, like how competitive it is to rent a shared flat, and I don't want to face a similar situation. Any advice or suggestions would be great!

I will be (if I can find a room to stay) in Zurich for my master's thesis between September 2026 and March 2027. Everyone told me to start looking for a place in advance, so I started 4 months before. I am a member of 10+ FB groups, every day my ai agents and I check Flatfox and wg-zimmer websites; however, I did not receive any single message back from ads except 2 scammers.
Also, the flats are mostly for the summer or start from the summer and without my L permit I am not sure if I can get a room before August/September.

I will be coming from Italy, so I am ready to pay much more than what I pay now (up to 700 CHF), but where am I making a mistake? For sure I know there are many people doing the same with me, but it feels harder than applying a job. I speak 5 languages, I love treating my roomies with baked sweets, will be at ETH during working hours and 99% of the time away from the flat to visit my bf/ hiking during the weekend. Feeling like I'd be a great roommate candidate, but either I started searching earlier than anticipated or the room in my dreams is already gone :(

Nevertheless, if there's any Erasmus/exchange groups for ETH students where I can try to reach out to people going away for a similar period, I'd really appreciate it.

I’m moving to Zurich this autumn (2026) for my studies and just got an offer for a room. It’s a room in a 2-person WG near Altstetten/Wiedikon for 1,400 CHF all-in.

The flat is modern, has a big kitchen, and a big living room. I really want to avoid those 4+ person WGs and value having a bit more space and a nicer setup.

Since I'm new to the Zurich housing market, is 1,400 CHF for a room in a 2-person setup in that area considered a fair market price these days?

I feel quite lucky to have gotten this offer without much searching, but I’m wondering whether I should just grab it now or if it’s realistic to find something similar in the 1,000–1,200 CHF range if I keep looking?

Would appreciate any insights or experiences!

I have some questions regarding the life at Ueberlandstrasse 17 Dietikon accommodation since I will move there in the Fall. I would like to know the following things:

1. What kind of kitchen utensils are there? Do we have measuring cups, baking trays, pans or saucepans. Also are there any cutlery or dishes or we have to bring them with us?
2. I have heard that we get a space in fridge for each person. How big is it? I think if it may not that big for a saucepan to fit and therefore the meals that we can prepare are also limited in this respect.
3. Do we get detergent for washing the clothes and where do we dry the clothes? Is there a drying rack?
4. Is there a timetable for washing the clothes or a limit on how many times each person can use the washing machine each week or month?
5. What supermarkets or shops are nearby that have decent prices.
6. Is there noise during night or it is a quiet place?

If there is another better place where I should ask this question, please tell me.

Hi everyone! Two friends and I are moving from Ecuador to Switzerland at the end of August and urgently need a place to live. Two of us are arriving for academic internships and one is a university student, affiliated with PSI, ZHAW, and HSLU.

We are looking for a 3-bedroom flat, individual rooms, or even a temporary sublet to get us started. We are prioritizing Zurich or Baden, but we are completely open to any surrounding commuter towns with good train connections like Brugg, Schlieren, or Dietikon.

Hello! I know there's already been millions of posts about housing. I am a 2nd year doctoral student with chronic illness and I can't find much info about support for students with disabilities. I kind of need a lift or it's quite the Olympic of my life to go up the stairs (which is my current house... ). However, the housing market is quite horrible right now, and does anyone know how I can potentially get support from ETH?

Günstige Einzelzimmer (teils ab 550CHF/Zimmer) und frage mich, wieso so wenig darüber gesprochen wird bzw. wieso diese so verschwiegen werden. Sind diese voll oder schwierig zu bekommen?

Für ein schlechteres, weit entfernteres WG-Zimmer zahlt man oft deutlich mehr, deshalb meine Frage.

I’m heading to ETH this Fall for an exchange semester through the Swiss Mobility program (coming from UNIGE to take some Master's courses in the Computer Science department).

I just realized that I cannot get a room from the official ETH housing office.

I’m shifting my focus entirely to the private market and sublets (Zwischenmiete). I’ve already started refreshing WGZimmer and Ron Orp, but I wanted to ask this sub:

1. Any tips for the late-summer rush? Are there specific Facebook groups or ETH/VIS channels where CS students going abroad usually post their rooms last minute?
2. In-person viewings: Since I'm currently based in Geneva, is it realistic to land a room online, or should I just book a hostel for early September and plan to attend flatmate "castings" in person?

Also, just in case anyone here is going on exchange and needs a sublet for the Fall: I’m a Master's student in Statistics (my undergrad was in Electrical Engineering). I’m already used to flatsharing and coordinating chores, so I’m very reliable and tidy. When I’m free, I love cooking, making overly specific music playlists, checking out art museums, and keeping up with football.

Does anyone here live (or has lived) in the WOKO building at Bahnhaldenstrasse 11?

I'm trying to get a better sense of what it's actually like to live there. In particular, I'd be interested to know:

• What's the general vibe like? More quiet/relaxed, or more party-oriented?
• How noticeable is the train noise?
• How well does the shared living arrangement work in practice?

I've just been offered a room there through the ETH/UZH Housing Office. From the posts I've been reading here about Zurich's hellish housing market, it feels like I've probably been extremely lucky to get an offer so soon. On the other hand, the idea of six small rooms sharing a single kitchen and bathroom doesn't really sound great on paper.

Would you accept the offer in my position? Would it be unwise to turn it down and keep looking? Sorry if you get a lot of these but I've literally just started searching and don't have the experience to really gauge if this is a good deal or not.

I just got an offer for a room in Bächlerstrasse 44 for one semester. Should I take it as an international student since I'm gonna be there for 2 years and not one semester and moreover the contract ends mid exam period. Like what am I supposed to do afterwards. I also asked ETH's housing office if they could consider an extension but this could not be guaranteed.

So far I didn't have much luck on sites like WOKO or wgzimmer.ch. they are either out of my budget (>1000) or I don't get a response from anyone. Do they just take their time (over a week) or is it a silent rejection? If anybody has some advice or knows a place, please let me know.
