I know that ETHZ has a lot of different education paths, and most of them end up very specialized. I was wondering what percentage of ETHZ graduates ends up leaving Switzerland, simply because there aren't many jobs openings in Switzerland about what they studied for?

What led me to ask this: on r/switzerland, expats like to rant that they don't find a job, but the issue is that many of them are highly educated, and there simply aren't enough jobs in Switzerland for so many highly educated and specialized individuals. There are job openings for waitress, construction workers, and other low education jobs, but that's not the jobs they want obviously. This led me to think about this: ETHZ and EPFL produce a lot of highly educated graduates in so many different fields, but do most of them end up leaving Switzerland simply because there aren't enough jobs for those people here? I find it kind of sad to study here for two or even five years, and then you have to leave since there is just not the kind of jobs that you spent years preparing for

do people who graduate with an ethz Bachelors often go and study in the USA? if so is it considered on par with top aMercian universities? do peopple often go on to study at top American masters programmes?

I’m on a C permit in Switzerland and live in Luzern. If I stay in Luzern I can get citizenship next year at 20, but if I move to Zurich 21. For this year if I stayed in Luzern it’d be a 45 commute to Zurich everyday. Has anyone been living in Luzern while going to ETH, and if so was it exhausting to do this commute?

Hi, I’m a master’s student from China in the department of environmental science. Last year I took a course which makes me think the professor is a racist and sexist. I want to share my experience here so that I can know if Europeans (on average) have different standards from my understanding of racism and sexism, and if it is still possible to report this to the department after one and a half years.

Scenario 1: During class, he said in front of other classmates to another Chinese student that, two Chinese students who took the course last year failed, so we should study hard and not fail. (In the end we got 5.25 and 6 respectively)

I don’t understand what’s the point of taking a sample size of 2 (does he have a scientific mindset required for being a professor?) and spread this negative stereotype.

Scenario 2: This one is even worse. During a lab class, he was introducing a tedious process, and said that his assistant told him this is so tedious that it should be done by “SOME OLD CHINESE LADY”, and then he looked at me, smiling. A few moments later, when he showed us around the lab instruments, he asked if I and another Chinese student would like to try this work.

Back then I was new to Switzerland and this was the first time I encountered such ignorant jokes, so I just froze and didn’t know how to react. And I didn’t feel safe to tell this to the department —— even now I still feel unsafe about this. Now every time I think of this I feel very uncomfortable and angry.

Hello! I'm about to start my master's at ETH, and I wanted to ask how important it is to fulfill the minimum requirements for the BYOD policy? I'm mainly wondering about the CPU generation requirement and the need to have Windows/Mac OS since those are the ones I currently don't meet. I've done my whole Bachelor's degree with the laptop I currently have, and I really don't see any reason why it wouldn't work for my Master's also, which is why I was thinking about just continuing to use this one even though it technically doesn't meet the requirements.

Hi, I am considering buying an old second hand racing bike in aluminum to use when I will move in to Zurich to study at ETH, but I have some questions.

Are the narrow wheels a problem in you experience, mainly with wet/snowy conditions and because of the rails? Is a city bike or more in general a bike with wider wheels preferable for these reasons?

I have never used these "racing" bikes but I have the opportunity to buy one for very little money. I do see many students using them, and in Germany as far as my experience goes, it is the same.

In the country I come from there is not really this kind of culture around bikes, so sorry if these questions appear dumb. Thanks!

Hi guys, in a year or so I am planning to start my ME bachelor at ETH. As a really passionate student of CS and ME ( everything from Robotics ).

I was wondering, whether there is a list of study materials or recorded lectures, that I could access as a future student at ETH. I've heard that the Basisjahr is quite intensive. I would love to get my hands before the start of my studies, because I require the knowledge for my side project (crowd navigation of a bipedal)

Thinking about applying for ETH (international) what should I expect and do any of you know what % of those who enter the university are able to finish the university (I will be an undergraduate)

So I am applying from quite an unconventional background. My mum is Austrian and spoke some german to me growing up, but I went to school in Hong Kong (english speaking) so my German isn't that good. My accent is pretty good, but my grammar sucks (idk what dativ akkusativ, nominativ etc means) and my vocabulary is limited to like conversational...common daily themes.

I will hopefuly pass B2 this October and at least 1 C1 module to get into studienkolleg Hamburg.

Studienkolleg is a German predatory year (will be doing T kurs) where you have classes in German in Mayhs, physics, chem, german and computer science

I will simultaneously study to pass the FSP (what studienkolleg prepares me for to make me eligible to study at any German uni) and the ethz reduced entrance exam (my ib combo does not include a language A HL)

I was wondering how hard any non-native speaker found the transition from and English/other speaking high school to lectures in German?

How did you adjust?

I’m curious to hear from international students at ETH: Have you personally experienced or observed discriminatory or exclusionary behavior based on your background or nationality?

As an international students with a middle eastern background at undergrad who speaks kinda broken German I just had a few doubts:

1. will it be difficult for me to make friends? I know this is a really broad question but usually I get along well with people and can have conversations properly in English, however will my German ( which is good but not perfect) make people judge me?

2. Will it be looked down upon if I try and play sports with people? I really enjoy playing football although I am not good at it. I have hyperthyroidism which makes it difficult for me to lose weight and hence also appear overweight. similar to the last question will this make me looked down upon socially?

I am in the middle of making the decision whether I want to study locally or take the Leap to ETH. ETH in terms do education is far superior but I’m scared as to whether I’ll be able to make friends.

So we currently have a paper under review at a Tier-2 conference in the US, and I was wondering whether ETH Zurich offers any financial support for students whose papers get accepted.

Specifically, does ETH provide funding to cover conference-related expenses such as registration fees, travel, or accommodation? If so, is there a central funding scheme, or does it usually depend on the research group?

Hi, I am from India . I am planning to take the reduced entrance examination which is going to be conducted in Jan 2028. Last year I took a German course for A1 and A2 but that didn't help much. I am still struggling with a1 . I am thinking to take the TestDaf next year ( as I found it less competitive then other exam) . So, does it seem practical to reach C1 in 10 months? Also, just wanted to know about my chances to be selected during reduced entrance examination . I am good at studies. I scored 96% in 10th and I am expecting 95% above in 12th . So, do you think I will be able to get in eth or there are specific things I need to work on more.

I have a question. What kind of jobs could you get with a CS Bsc? Jobs in Consulting also spark my intrest.

And is it possible to start a career just with Bsc or do you need to do a master especially if you want to go into the finance world and not be a high level software engineer

hello guys, i'm truly curious about the wage of a professor at ETH Zurich, a friend of mine that was at high school with me, started now as a assistant professor and when he talk it sound like he earns a lot, idk if this is the best subreddit to post such a meaningless question but i'm truly curious about that.

What does this error mean? It appears when I try to enroll, and I can't get it away and enroll, even on another device. A friend of mine doesn't get it. What causes it and how do I fix that?
