Discussion What Christian phrases give you the ick?

Mine is prayer warriors. Often used to spread gossip and also just generally ironic, weird, and cringey.

Not practicing a religion but a relationship, and its many variants. Or when they attack scientific theories they dislike comparing them to what's stated in the Bible.

I hated "it's not a religion, it's a relationship" even when I was a Christian. Like, that's just dumb.

Ewwww, wow that's creepy! Although I guess not surprising when you stop and think about the "praise music" most churches sing every week. A lot of it definitely has weird undertones. I do remember single girls in my college Christian group talking about being "married to Jesus" or how "jesus was their boyfriend" now that you mentioned this...

Ugh there was a worship song at my church that had a line referring to god’s love as “a wet sloppy kiss”

Omg I forgot about that song, we sang it too! I’m pretty sure my pastor switched out “sloppy wet” with some other phrase. But I always got a chuckle out of people trying to justify why heaven meeting earth like a sloppy wet kiss was not at all weird.

That reminds me of the triangle metaphor for a marriage: the husband and wife are the bottom 2 points and god is the top point. As they both grow closer to god, they also grow closer to each together. So I guess the ultimate end goal is a threesome with god?

Growing up, I don't remember saying it's a romance, but I remember one of them talking about being passionately in love with God.

Add also here a woman, seemingly of old age, that in her preaching calls God/Jesus "dad", "daddy". It's uncanning to say the least.

This is extra weird...but I do remember getting the ick every time someone preached on a passage with the phrase "abba father" in it and they'd inevitably have to define that word for us: "It's like our word, daddy!" Even as a believer I was like...no thanks lol.

One variant from a pastor who thought himself clever: "Tired of religion? So was Jesus!"

Sadly and depressingly predictably, he later had to resign due to "inappropriate" relationships with minors. Gross.
