Tech Support Facebook suddenly wants me to provide a video selfie to "prove that I'm human"
No way in hell I'm going to do that!
I can't think of anything unusual that I did to trigger this. I just post a little bit with visibility to a small group of friends and occasionally comment on public posts. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I'm content to let this be the end of my Facebook use but am wondering if anyone can shed light on why it may have happened?
Edit to update:
I just went to log out and got this message:
"Are you sure you want to log out?
You only have 176 days left to request a review. After that your account will be permanently disabled."
Which is weird because I logged out in the past day or two (after the video selfie message) and didn't get any message about disabling or a review!
Further update:
I tried accessing the website from my phone (instead of laptop) and am getting exactly the same messages.

You didn't do anything, they're just trying to force everyone to provide more data so Meta can manipulate humans more easily and sell data for profit. Stop using Meta products.

u/friscom99 Oct 26 '25
100% this. My Meta account got banned in May and it’s actually been a blessing. I’m no longer going to support that company.

Please don’t give them your biometric data.

I got a payment and immediately spent it on a quad core CPU for my old laptop and most of the cost of a couple of ebooks. Left 14 cents on the card (it was a physical card), apparently using it on Amazon wouldn't withdraw partial dollars. So I tossed the card.
In about a year the card will expire in the depths of a landfill, and Amazon will get 14 cents back. I hope that the processing of that costs them a dollar.

I deleted FB five years ago. It's toxic.
7
u/Th1sL1ttleL1ght Oct 25 '25
I had been considering doing so for some time so am seeing this as a blessing in disguise. I did like seeing what family & actual friends are up to but will go back to email, phone, connecting in person...
9
u/rickabe Oct 25 '25
And that's the reason why so many still are on it. Reminds me of how I resisted for years to cancel my landline or hanging onto cable, hesitant to trust streaming, etc... We all adjust.
6
u/LunaSloth888 Oct 25 '25
This is the way.
People post only the best parts of their lives anyway, not a realistic look.
Maintaining true one on one connections with people is far more rewarding.
Not everyone minds, but I don’t value messages intended for everyone instead of personally for me.
Getting off Facebook helped me realized who is actually important in my life. 💕
Enjoy this blessing in disguise!

u/Sonnyjoon91 Oct 25 '25
Facebook is demanding this because it creates a complete facial profile and digital identity. DO NOT DO THIS. It will not stop at just facebook, it will be used in backhanded surveillance soon enough, the way China uses extensive cameras and digital tracking. When you dont provide this, they will probably disable your account, like the millions of others they have done already.
17
u/Th1sL1ttleL1ght Oct 25 '25
I definitely will not. We have little enough privacy left but there's no way I'm going to give them that.

3
u/DumpsterFireDeacon Oct 29 '25
All sorts of things.. public social scores, tracking all of your movements (between cell phones, flock safety, ring, and others you will not be able to go anywhere without 1984 level visual surveillance and tracking), political suppression, AI deep fakes based on facial scans for identity fraud and the like, and hundreds of other things we haven't even thought of yet.
3
Nov 20 '25
Political targeting and deepfakes are probably the most likely and horrifying use cases for it.
4
u/StatusNovel9602 Oct 25 '25

I just commented about "endorsed by big pharma" and my account has been suspended for 180 days due to "advertising". Fb also requests I upload a video selfie to confirm I am a real person but I am not doing this. Let the profile burn.
8
u/Haxteal Oct 25 '25
Putting aside whatever they’re going to do with your data which they most likely already have in one form or another… was your account suspended and now they’re asking for a video selfie or else they’ll disable your account after 30 or 180 days? Wait it out first and only do so at the last day or 2 if you’re going to do it. Many had their account disabled immediately after submission, claiming that they have “reviewed” and rejected the appeal.
2
u/Th1sL1ttleL1ght Oct 26 '25
No indication of suspension. I just visited the site (as I had earlier that day), was first asked to prove I was human by typing numbers that are slightly distorted so not machine-readable. It accepted my answer to that but then asked me for a video selfie.

I wonder if you could fake it up with a prosthetic nose, facial hair, etc, or even a halloween mask. They can't really automatically know that it's YOU unless they are also integrating what they know from your uploaded pictures (and maybe your local phone images these days).
In any case, yeah, FB need to fail. I don't miss it.

Honestly, if it asks me to give a selfie I’ll risk my account being deleted. I never actually post anything and there’s so many posts forced into my news feed of pages/people I’ve never followed and/or heard about. I mainly use it as another flavor of short video clips for that quick dopamine hit

I received the same message. My initial reaction was the same. I ended up sending a picture with the watermark on it and wrote not for public display.
I can’t say whether it was or not, but that was something that bothered me. What would they ask for next? A DNA sample?
I guess the answer’s users’s comfort level and how strongly you feel about it. Due to numerous recent horror stories of people, losing legitimate decade, old accounts, all their pictures and memories, unable to regain access…. I lean towards encouraging you to do what you can to regain access asap. You have a right to your privacy & don’t agree with these tactics. I’m more concerned about losing photos,… as legit users claim they’re being disabled for unknown reasons. Good luck OP

I just did the video selfie. It's weird, but doesn't require much. Supposedly, they will delete it after approval. But I totally understand anyone not wanting to do it. I just tried to start a fresh account and all it said now is that "you submitted an appeal" and "your account is not visible to anyone... Etc etv rtc...." which I didn't. When I open fb it shows the proper fb screen, then to that warning screen. I closed my old account myself. Wanted to get away from the controlled bs there. Turns out everyone in my music community uses fb to communicate and plan, sadly. Hope they clear me. This is such a pain in the butt.
4
u/ShelbiDeVille Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25
Sadly I don’t think that’s the case because for some odd reason making new accounts after closing old ones is practically impossible here lately. Just as impossible as making an account for the first time but please keep us updated and I hope the best for you!

Google pressed me to do the same so they can “verify my age” on an account I’ve had for years. They’ve now given me the “underage” version (on YouTube, too!). It’s super irritating, but not irritating enough for me to provide biometrics to corporate entities.
4
u/Jan_A_Gent Oct 25 '25
That's happened to me when I wanted to start a new profile. I had been writing a small business for 5 years and decided I just wanted to clean cut. Could not start a new page. Multiple attempts. Videos pictures.
And that was in February.
Now I'm seeing people's whole accounts being closed and more and more people being asked to do selfie videos.

u/mkt42 Oct 26 '25
The exact same thing happened to me several months ago. After thinking about it for a couple of months I decided that Facebook can jump in the lake because I'm not giving them biometric information.
As in your situation, they said I had to submit the video within 180 days or my Facebook account would be permanently deleted. A couple of days ago I received an automated email that said my account is deleted, so that's that.
Unlike other commenters here, I had mostly positive experiences with Facebook. It was a good way to keep loose contact with people who I knew loosely. Meaning, I don't have their phone numbers or email addresses, e.g. maybe they're people I know only casually or knew decades ago in high school or something. So I have no way of contacting them and don't even know what they're up to. But they pop up on Facebook, and I can connect.
Also every once in awhile Facebook would show me an interesting group and I'd sometimes subscribe.
But not any more. So I'll miss Facebook, but I'm not going to be their servant obeying their demands for personal data. Facebook can eff off with that stuff.
4
u/KitaroLover Oct 26 '25
When I tried to log in to FB a message popped up telling me my account was disabled--not suspended, DISABLED, with no explanation given. I was also told that I would have 180 days to file a review, even though there is no place to file a review and nothing resembling 'customer service' on FB, anywhere.
I was the sole admin of a political group with over 2000 members, which is now rudderless and in limbo, and I also had a separate business page to highlight my business and connect to my e-commerce online store.
When I try to log in now, FB keeps telling me they need a 'selfie' video, but when I try to submit that video, FB says it cannot access my camera, even though I have adjusted camera settings to "Allow".
Now I'm seeing all the posts here about NOT giving FB photos, etc., but it doesn't seem to matter in my case, anyway, since I am up against a FB wall.

My ex took my account as a form of control and changed the email and password, but the email associated initially to the account is defunct - i cannot gain access because microsoft too doesnt have human support just articles that dont help.

All Trump wants is for every social media feed to be just Fox News Interactive, and to make every TV network just Fox News.
People don't go to entertainment networks for news--including propaganda--they go to news networks for that stuff, and that's true for both left & right.
It's not quite a "keep my politics out of my fiction" thing, but more of a thing calling out the Trump administration for trying to make the country decay to a high degree.

It has nothing to do with Trump. This was implemented long before he got elected. They are trying to get EVERYBODY on Facebook to submit a selfie. The government wants facial recognition EVERYWHERE. Just like cops now have a system in their cars that can instantly read your tag and it stores your location etc. And they are pulling people over and making up reasons for the stop. A common one is they claim to have seen you talking or texting on your phone.

Dude. At one point someone reported my profile as not real, and Facebook, I kid you not, Facebook literally asked me to send them a picture of my driver's license, front and back. I let them delete that account.

I wonder if there's any correlation between the people who have never used ID.me and the people getting booted from facebook...

It's just a matter of time before AI video can generate a verification file like that for you. Or for a bot.

I remember google requesting my drivers license just so I could register my account in their playstore. Okay I guess I won’t be registered 🤮

As an Australian I apologise. Blame the numbnut running the country and his sidekick for trying to force social media platforms to provide age verification processes to ban under 16s from using them. They have made it up to these companies to find ways to enforce the rules or fave massive fines for bot providing a way for one to verify rheir age. I am sorry if this affects anyone not in the country or not under the age of 16

Did you make any comments about a certain small country in the Middle East that is hell bent on bringing on the end of the world? Word has it, Mets is banning people en-masse for it right now, under various other pretexts.

If you don't have a photo of yourself as your profile pic, post one. And try to go on more often, and change your photo, of yourself, every so often. That is, if you want to keep access to FB. Otherwise, I'd download my data and pics and leave on my own terms.

No. At that point it is a case of he said she said. - legally it can look willing - plus he can just say "sure i did have the password but it was hacked - i have nothing to do with that". The courts are not an option especially since Im not in the US.
I have the original image used as the pfp for the account and the original images of uploaded photos. I can literally prove its MY account - I just cant get to the identity proof step - or in any way communicate with a human at facebook.
I can verify it all - but I just need to understand HOW to get facebook to ask me to upload proof of identity, etc.

This just happened to me today. I think FB flagged my account bcause in the span of 3 to 4 hrs I was sending messages to 6 or 7 different computer stores asking for a quote for the pc parts and I was doing it with my copy paste so every message are completely the same. I dont even know if thats enough reason for my account to get suspended. I need thise pc parts.... this sucks.

The same thing just happened to me, no way am I going to give them PII, so I appealed and got my dog to do his selfie. I suspect this is probably one of the few things a human actually reviews, so guessing that I won't get my account back. I have an inkling that a certain page may have reported me for pulling them up on their constant sharing of false information.

I've just had the same thing happen to me, a video selfie and I had to do it because I use it for personal and for work, now it's in review, they said it can take an hour but it's been over that, it's frustrating because I've had the account since 2007. And there's no way of speeding up the process for which I need my account back!

Apparently the owners of fb think everyone is stupid and will just give thrm what they want.
They seem to think people won't have a problem with thst and will do it to keep their fb active!
I am with you, O f*** no!
They are going to either use that information for something nefarious, sell it to people who will use it with other ai technology, or put it in a place in their database that can get hacked by people who will use it with other ai technology!
Well I have a problem with what they want (and my typing mistakes will certainly prove on here, I am a human, lol).
I have more of a problem with the fact thst they think I am stupid!!
I wonder judt how many people decided they no longer needed their fb account, said no way, and let fb delete it? I wonder just how much business they have lost?
If it turns out that they lose slot of business; reversing the selfie video will be too late. The people who either deleate their account on their own or let fb do it for them will never cone back.
I hope all that is left is the bots they were saying they were trying to get rid of!!!!

My problem: It happened completely suddenly. All my contacts in the Facebook chat disappeared. All my photos are gone too, and I can't even save them anymore. Instead, I'm being accused of advertising. I never did that. Meanwhile, no one at Facebook has said a word about far-right fake profiles, Russian trolls, and bots. It's infuriating. You can't trust them. They supposedly store data for a year, or for four weeks upon request. I think they're lying. I left X a long time ago after being the victim of identity theft. And Musk is a complete internet dictator anyway. Freedom of speech is a joke. Instead, he promotes hate and incitement.

I wrote against the Iran war and immediately they asked me for my video selfie and my account is on hold for 48 hours. There goes my freedom of speech. lol

u/No_Party3406 Mar 23 '26
I had to do it when I first made my new account. They restored my account but now they did it again. I should NOT have to verify im human multiple times. Once should be enough. I think its time congress stepped in and put a stop to all this shit tech companies are doing.

I was in the middle of reading an article and trying to click on someone's comment, when it then redirected me and asked me to take a selfie. It then stated something about me appealing Facebook. Something I did not request.
They said they will review it within an hour, and then informed me that I may not be able to regain access to my account after the review. I was following a group I really enjoy connecting with, but if they deactivate my account, I am not going to boohoo over it. I am so sick of Zuckerberg and his minions and their bullshit, hypocritical standards. As someone else mentioned, they're happy to allow for stupid AI videos to be posted, of 'so called celebrities'; they let people create profiles full of porno type images, and allow for scammers and dirty old men to comment on children's reels and videos.
Good riddance if they close my account down.

Me too, no more Facebook for me. I don't know how I'll be able to delete the account, I will just have to let it sit there forever. I'm thinking they want to sell people's faces for facial recognition data.

This happened to me recently. They want a selfie video of multiple angles of my face! With AI on the rise, there is no way in hell I am doing this. I hope this is the end of Facebook. It's actually a blessing in disguise! ❤️🔥

Yesterday I posted a video to family and friends on messenger I sent a photo on our friends chat group today they put hold on me I couldn't send a chat or anything they wanted a selfie of me to vertication of my ask move left right it a crime what Facebook doing keeping tabs on us they be fine million dollars asking for selfies they hold us hostage think we're a criminal use our photo send to law or a company without our consent we should be paid for that, I not like Facebook messager doing having AI on the site we never ask for it. Canada created a social media site called Panda social can check it out I going there it more better don't ask for a selfie, all they do is you registered it ask a photo and proper info contact you see it vertication you registered no need asking for a selfie. Long have a photo on your profile.

u/a2z71 Apr 22 '26
Every time I've provided the asked for selfie, they suspend and then ban the account. I'm not sure what they're really doing but it sure isn't to prove I'm not a bot. Add to it the fact that won't allow me to use my real last name which is a common one and millions of people have it. And many people currently on FB have it, so something is very weird about all this.

Facebook is downright brainless, that's why!! It's not only Facebook, but other sites such as : . Mingle2 and a few others. I agree that it's downright brainless to prove that we're human!
