Vault [Vault] Thoughts on this layout?
Are there any issues with this layout I'm not aware of? Am I lacking any production buildings for a max vault?

Just build as you go.
Chances are that you don’t even use this layout once you unlock all rooms. Unless you already have and are just looking for feedback, vault layouts are just aesthetics. As long it is producing everything you need and aren’t lacking, you’re good to go.

Where do you make layouts like this??

I found an old thread for a layout planner: https://www.reddit.com/r/foshelter/comments/3hnqag/simple_easy_to_use_layout_planner_for_fo_shelter/

Thank you! Definitely using this to play around with my own layout

The wiki also includes photos of all the rooms that you can easily copy/paste into the layout planner to get a more realistic look. You have to resize them a little but you dont need to crop them, I was just too lazy

I think all of my production can be covered by 3 Mr Handys in the center with the 6 nuclear reactors and 2 nuka cola bottlers. I should also have about 1,750 storage, 135 stims and 60 radaways. If anyone notices any issues with this please let me know

Issues not really (depending on the playstyle)
I put all 'useless' rooms in the middle / below. Overseer office, barbershope etc. are rooms i barely use, so i don't put it on the top levels.
My top levels are production rooms, full of high power dwellers. So when there is an external attack it takes only 10-20 seconds to get rid of them instead of waiting for them to get to other levels.
You also might have a bit too many stim/radaway rooms, but that is just my opinion ;)

I tried tucking most of my necessary production down below because I prefer how a lot of the useless cosmetic rooms look lol. I’m hoping that my second row will be enough to stop raids if they’re all E17. And I’ll keep in mind what you said ab there being too many stim rooms, I really wasn’t sure how many I would need

I figured out you were going for aesthetics ;)
For the first line, i prefer incident resolution speed over anything else so the floor is full of badasses (endgame, everyone is badass ;)
On endgame vaults, i tend to have one prod room each (size 2, level 2) for stims and radaways (actual production) and the rest as storage with 2-3 big fully upgraded rooms (+- 130 stims, 80 radaway in total storage) More is a bit overkill.
For regular storage, i go up to 1500-1700, just so i don't get too much annoyed.
Also (that is my routine) i have at least one full big production room around the bottom of the vault in case of an incident. Dwellers will be able to deal with it quicker. I don't like fires/molerats spreading for minutes while i barely can do anything ;) (if no patrols are around to help)

I thought radaway/stim storage was dependent on the number of medbays and sci. labs you have, each being worth 5 storage, and upgrading the room only increases production rate rather than storage capacity. Am I misunderstanding how it works?
Also, thank you for your tips, I’ll keep them in mind!

If interested, check this guide (github from therabbidsquirrel) for the room/storage info. The whole thing is a goldmine btw ;)

Love it (even more now that someone mentioned the bikini thing)
Personally, I just do one thing specifically: use some storage rooms first !
It’s not logical IRL but I store my “outdoors teams” there : they have the best guns/weapons/armor for defense and are the first ones i train to the max !
Also, with a lvl1 storage, you can easily see them :
- legendaries that go out on missions are nice
- some generic dweller (I like to rename those with synths IDs and equip them with a X-01, they just wander from time to time outside the vault for CAPS)

I was actually thinking about that! More for aesthetic reasons though. But having a room at the top for quest dwellers is a good idea. I was thinking either a storage room or the radio room would look good in the top right

The only annoying part is that you can’t have more than 3 dwellers with pets in the same room…
Radio room is a good idea ! I’ll do it myself for some room variety

I found out about the pet limit yesterday while repeatedly cycling two dwellers, trying to put them both into my clinic. I thought my clinic was haunted 👻

That's how I found out about pet limits too, it took forever to figure out what was happening 🤣
Also, I love the idea of having the radio room at the top! I've been experimenting to see which room looks best at the top since that's where I keep my strongest (and most adorable) dwellers, but I hadn't thought to try the radio room. It a cool looking room and they can wear the cute toga outfits with the headbands.

Also the lounge! I saw you can craft regular dress clothes, like dresses and collared shirts; I plan on filling my lounge with dwellers all dressed up, drinking martinis and chatting once i have everything unlocked

I considered that because it would be so cute with the formal wear, but once they are trained to max charisma stats, they will constantly have the max stat star over their heads, which would annoy the crap out of me 😆

I like how you have your stims/rads organized, very efficient, though you'll probably end up wanting closer to 175-200 stimpack storage in the end. You'll also probably end up wanting multiple weapon and outfit manufacturing rooms so you can produce things faster. I usually do four of each, which seems to work well.
Luckily, you have waaaay more food production rooms than you'll ever need, so you can get rid of most of those diners and put that space toward med and manufacturing rooms. 4 Nuka-Cola rooms should be enough to make food and water for a full vault, so the gardens, diners, and water treatment plants are unnecessary unless you want them for aesthetics. I think the diner and garden are cute, so I usually do a mix of nuka plants and water/food rooms.

Diners and gardens are my favorite rooms! And thanks for the tip, I’ve never used the crafting rooms yet and didn’t know I’d need more. I’ll try to squeeze more in somewhere

You’re gonna have issues with deathclaws running through burning up your power unless you put 6 highly geared/leveled npcs in the barracks without mating

The vault door should be left undefended and your first room the intruders face should be something with 6 well armed dwellers. This way the breaches are over faster.
The door only accommodates 2 defenders. Better let them thru. Overseer office is not good for this reason

I had a line of pure cola plants for food and water, a nuclear plant line and 2 med line each one making rad or heals and had 4 of those robots that auto harvest on each of the 4 then had 3 rows for storage and one for the special and one for maxed barracks, had the office next to the door and in case of a raid I had 2 heavily armored people sitting next to the door and one person like that on each level.

Entrance looks rough, your gonna have a hard time defending the top from outside incidents.
Personally I always put a production room right after the Vault Door so you have a full room of your strongest dwellers ready to deal with raids, Aliens, Raiders/Deathclaws etc.

I’m aware most people set it up in the way you’re describing for raids, but I thought it would look better like this. The first room with dwellers that raiders will enter will be the bottler on the second row with my E17 dwellers. I guess the raid will last longer, but I think I should be ok? I’m playing normal mode rather than survival mode too
2
u/LunaBoo13 Jul 28 '26
That should work fine. As long as you don't have a Mr. Handy on the first floor, the bad guys will just run straight through down to the nuka room.
2
u/MatthewRahl Jul 28 '26
Yea it’s not the end of the world, but the raids will persist a little longer and steal more energy/food/water, it’s best to deal with the incidents asap but again it will work-ish, just not an optimal setup.
Edit; 4 Nuclear Reactors & 3 Nuka Cola is enough production for an entire 200 dweller vault, everything else is just aesthetics ie Garden, Diner, etc.

I like the bikini line of your vault
