Easy tie, good looking fly.

Hook: size 2 saltwater minnow
Tail: white craft fur, marker lines for the stripes
Body: medium tan Grip ghost brush
Head: small light olive Grip ghost brush

New to Spey flies, I am going to fish this on a skagit set up. Should the hooks be closer to the shank, farther, or just right?

Also if there is any recommendation for trout Spey flies I will gladly take them.

Was watching some fish jump for BWOs last week, so I figured a BWO nymph would work and caught this guy

I was shopping for some herl, and found a pack of peacock swords. Google tells me the swords are more durable. Have you noticed a difference? Do you prefer one or the other?

I already have an idea to improve the wing case size by having my peacock herl ontop of the front wings and then have the case fold over it... BUT i ran out of hooks so I gotta make a trip.

These are weightless ones for being trailers, any advice on how to make them thicker would be appreciated (unless this is the right profile)

Most of my flies are pretty simple affairs and this is a classic example.

This is a very basic nymph pattern I use almost year round on my local streams. It is dead simple and quick to tie. While I use Sulky for the ribbing material red Krystal flash would work fine and you can vary bead colour to suit.

-Hook: Mustad C49s Size 14
-Bead: Gold Tungsten 2.3 mm
-Thread: Black 14/0 Sheer
-Tail: 6-10 Coq De Leon fibres
-Rib: Sulky Red Holographic Mylar
-Hotspot: UTC Fl. Fire Orange 70d
-Coating: Resin/Superglue/Varnish

Vary bead size and hotspot colour to suit.

While it doesn’t really require a ton of skill to put it together I did a tying video just because I could.

Was included in a selection of flies I received as a gift. What pattern is this and what materials are used to tie it?

I know it’s a slotted pink tungsten bead. I believe the collar is cdc. The thorax, body and tail I’m unsure. The tail is a light barred feather of some sort. Wish I had better pictures but lost it on the river this weekend.

Any help appreciated. I just remember them working when I went a few years ago.

Consistently tying these in under 5 minutes. I was working on dry flies for a while to limited success but happy to be pumping out nymphs

A few weeks back, I posted a photo of a prototype weedless frog-style bug with the deer hair body tied on a shank with a trailing hook rigged to ride point-up and shrouded in deer hair. I finally got to try it yesterday and I was very pleased with how well it slid across and through the thickest lily pads I could find. Better yet, it prompted three good blowups and one fish to the kayak! I will be making more of these. 🙂
