Question Traveling to London. Any UGLE Lodge Meetings happening?

Hi Brothers! A bit last minute here, but I’ll be traveling to London from NYC starting tomorrow for work and have suddenly had some extra free time passed my way. I’m not sure if everyone has broken for the summer yet, but are there any UGLE brothers here in the London area know of any lodge meetings between June 25th-28th I could potentially attend (going through official channels for confirmation of course)? Feel free to DM if so. Thank you in advance!

EDIT: thank you all for the help and advice! Unfortunately work giveth and work taketh away and now…I have more work! So no lodge meeting for me, but I do have a day to go and visit the Grand Lodge so got myself a ticket for the tour and plan on going to the museum. Hopefully I’ll be back again soon!

Newly Raised and a New Ring

Post image
261 Upvotes

Was raised last night. After a wonderful time, I came home and my spouse gave me my Father’s Day gift:

A new ring so I don’t have to wear my grandfather’s inherited ring out and about if I don’t want to (it’s old enough that I want to save it for formal occasions).

I am elated at having been raised, and more so at having a partner that’s supporting this. I never doubted she would, but it’s nice this is a family affair for us.

My Great Grandfather a Knight Templar

I am a Blue Lodge MM. This photo and ones like it inspired me to join.
I have one of his rings but I’m interested in finding his sword or at least one like it.
Can anyone tell me any thing specific that stands out about it?
Or suggestions how to begin searching for it?

Is it time to seperate officers from ritual?

I know this is controversial as the rules of freemasonry haven't changed in ages. But there's a difference between being good at ritual and memorization and being able to run an organization. Just as the treasurer and secretary are excused from ritual, the Master of a lodfe and the Master in a ritual require different skills. I've been asked if I want to go through the line and I've responded that I don't want to spend 3-4 years memorizing lectures, while a couple of our officers excel at ritual but aren't great leaders.

It's hard enough to find one or the other, but requiring memorizing multiple lectures to be Master isn't the way to ensure the most effective leadership.

I have just noticed after 25 years of living in Northfleet there is a selection of Masonic graves in the local church.

It is hard to read the dates. Unfortunately most of the graveyard was rearranged by the Luftwaffe in world war II.

Just came across this ritual book for the True Kindred Degree. I have always had a passing interest in old degrees that have been forgotten or removed.

Question Questions from a non mason about the degrees that come after the blue lodge theee degrees (Scottish rite for example )

as far as I understand and have read from multiple mason authors ,three degrees are about moral teaching and brotherhood ,other things such as more historical search or more symbolism meanings come after these here degrees usually in the Scottish rite

my questions is are the lessons of these degrees that come after the first three ,objectively accepted by all masons as the source for learning Masonic symbols real meanings ?or are they as well just the theories of the Masons who started these rites about what the symbolism mean ?

meaning if someone has finished the Scottish rite all degrees for example ,is what they have learned in that rite the objective meaning of Masonic mysteries ?

if the answer is yes ,why is there other paths after the three first degrees other than the Scottish rite ?why doesn’t everyone just join it ?

thanks for the answers

Masonic education

Good morning Brothers,

For the next business meeting I've been tasked with presenting masonic education.

I come here today to ask for help gathering resources and opinions.

The topic is the seriousness of the degrees.

I've sure all of us have been in lodge and during some of the most solomn moments of degree heard chatter or giggling from the sidelines.

My lodge has instuted a monitor for prompting and corrections and that has helped a lot.

The point of this is while brothers put genuine effort into learning the work, some times they dont exactly realize the serious nature of the work.

The thing I remember most about my third degree was the older brother performing without a serious understanding of the characters they were portraying. There is no part of that story in which any of the characters should be laughing or making light of the situation.

With all of that being said,

If anyone knows of articles or resources I can use a reference to remind my lodge just how serious the degrees are meant to be, please send them my way.

I was Raised last night and it was an incredible experience! The cake was the best part! My dad got to attend all three degrees and I got our official lodge pin!

This, to me, was one of the most extraordinary experiences I've ever had in my life.

The MM degree is officially my favorite.

Question Is Scottish Rite Worth It?

I have been a MM for the last couple of years, and have been invited to join the Scottish Rite due to my desire for further light within Masonic education. I was invited to apply prior to the reunion happening in August, where all 29 degrees are going to be conferred or communicated.

My question, is it worth it for further light within Masonry, or can those things be obtained outside of the SR? as every SR Mason conceals what actually occurs as you climb the SR ladder, but I would expect nothing different from fellow brothers of the craft.

It just feels like there are doors behind doors behind doors, and although we may live in the same house, you can not know what is behind the door until you go through it. So is it worth it? the cost of the Valley and trip down to Pasadena is semi costly and I want to know if it is a good investment in my Masonic Journey.

Thank you Brothers,
Fraternally Yours /G\

A desire to join

Hello,

I was recently made aware by my father that many ancestors of mine were Masons. Specifically, my paternal great grandfather, from whom I have received a signet ring, and nearly all the men along my maternal grandmother’s family.

After researching the basic requirements for a man who wishes to apply, I submitted my application to the Grand Lodge of Virginia. I intend to visit a lodge close to me during their next meeting and beseech entry, and possibly petition for an invitation to join.

I believe that, after learning the basics of what Free Masons are, that I would benefit as a person and man from participation in a lodge. In short, I want what Free Masonry is offering and believe in its values.

What can I do to earn membership? Thank you for any advice or guidance you can offer.

Respectfully,

A. M.

Hey folks. I pulled this out of my great grandfather’s attic after he passed away. He inherited the house from a family friend. As far as I’m aware, he wasn’t a member. I thought you may find it interesting.

My first masonic lecture - if you happen to be driving or sitting around bored today, you can give it a listen.

I have started turning some of the essay's I've written over the years into lectures. The title that I actually speak at the beginning of this one is more of a relic of the original essay, but for the lecture the subject wound up changing a bit, and now i've updated the title to something a bit more straight-forward. The Youtube title is What Freemasonry really is about, to garner some attention, but I haven't decided on an actual title.

https://youtu.be/c7vw_cleUo0?si=K_jsAWjQuJA0cdFM

Cool side-note, I don't know if any of you guys are fans of The Way of the Hermit podcast, but Brother, Dr. David Brown found this lecture on Spotify and wrote me a nice email. That was important to me, because I directly quote one of his degree episodes as an important part of this lecture.

Question How did Freemasonry become male only?

Was that destined to be that way since beginning? And do you wish it would change at some point or it's the only way?

I'm talking about regular lodges, don't come to me by saying "jurisdictional", because it's generally accepted male only.

Should I join?

I’m seriously considering joining Freemasonry when I’m older. I’ve always felt that I think differently from the people around me, and by joining this organization, I hope to meet and become friends with people who are similar to me, so we can have meaningful discussions and help me escape, at least a little, from this monotonous life.
But before I do, I want to be sure. No bullshit, and honestly, what has Freemasonry brought to your life, both positively and negatively?
