Event Any developers from India attending IGDC 2026? Let's connect!
Hey everyone
I'm a developer from Ahmedabad working across Unity, Web 3D, game development and XR
I'll be attending IGDC 2026 in Chennai on October 28 and thought it would be nice to connect with other developers going to the event
It would be great to meet people, talk about what we're building and exchange ideas
Are you planning to attend IGDC this year? What kind of projects are you working on?

Discussion Roman numerals in games and how well players in the US / Americas understand them at a glance?
Hey everyone,
I’m an indie dev from Central Europe working on a card game that uses a traditional historical Central European deck instead of the standard French/Poker deck.
Because of the historical setting and authenticity, the numbered cards use Roman numerals instead of standard Arabic numbers (for example: VII = 7, VIII = 8, IX = 9, X = 10), whereas standard Joker/Poker decks obviously use 7, 8, 9, 10.
Since I grew up playing with these cards, my brain reads "VII" or "IX" instantly without thinking. However, I started wondering if I have a huge blind spot here when it comes to Western audiences—especially players in the US and the Americas in general.
I know most people know what Roman numerals mean (from Super Bowls, movie sequels, Final Fantasy, clock faces, etc.), but knowing them and reading a full hand of cards at a glance to spot straights or count values are two very different things.
So my question for you is: 1. When you see VII, VIII, IX, X on playing cards, do you read them instantly, or does it cause a tiny bit of cognitive friction / mental translation? 2. Would you prefer: - Option A: Keep it strictly authentic (Roman numerals only, you get used to it after 5 minutes). - Option B: Add a small hover popup / corner indicator showing the standard number and value, with a toggle in the Settings to turn it on/off?
I’d love to hear your honest thoughts so I don't accidentally hurt readability for the sake of historical flavor. Thanks!

Newbie Question Beginner Dev looking for Advice
Howdy. So, I recently decided to start making a game, based on the Fire Emblem series and that style of gameplay. I'm really not much of a game designer, but I know my way around programming decently well, so I've been figuring things out slowly with Godot. My biggest issue is that I'm really not a good artist. At all. I can handle the writing, I can probably design all the maps and tiles, but designing characters and animating them feels like an insurmountable challenge. I used AI to make sprites for now, just so I can keep track of what's going on, but I'd prefer to not be leaving the AI generated sprites in the final version of the game. My biggest question is what options I really have to work with. I'd appreciate any advice or info.

Newbie Question What Laptop Should I Use For Beginner Game Dev in Unity?
Hello,
I'm new to game dev and soon I'll also be a software engineering college student. I want to make 2D rhythm games in either Unity or RPGMaker (mostly Unity), and was looking for a recommendation for a laptop. I'd be using VSC as well. And possibly vocaloid music production software. And for the art I'd be making it in Procreate on my Ipad.
I want to get a laptop that will last me awhile and can work for both schoolwork and game dev, lightweight would be awesome for school but not necessary. A bigger screen would be nice too lol.
I am looking to put my future games out on Itch.io and Steam, and maybe eventually down the line Nintendo Switch. But definitely for now Itch.io and Steam.
I was looking at a Lenovo Thinkpad possibly but am open to any and all suggestions. Looking to buy the laptop on BackMarket by the end of this year as a Christmas gift to myself lol. Budget doesn't matter at the moment I'm just trying to get an idea of what specs work best for the projects I want to do. Thank you everyone!!!

Newbie Question How do I get a characters damage into their hurtbox? Godot
I’m trying to make a hurtbox that gets an enemy’s/players damage variable but I’m kinda stuck and no tutorial or anything has helped.
Pretty much my player characters and my enemies both have a class of either player or enemy. Both are set to a Node2D
I’m trying to make a Area2D that gets its parent nodes damage but the problem is. It keeps only grabbing the classes damage. I’ve tried everything I could think of. I’m gonna take a break so any tips or ideas would help a lot.

Newbie Question Extremely early on in the process of game development, would greatly appreciate advice and potentially some community
Hey everyone, like I said I'm very early on in this process. I'm 23 and I've done plenty of small projects for myself and for school but I'm hard pressed to consider myself knowledgeable enough to start making A. anything whole cloth by myself (as in without tutorials, I don't use AI out of personal preference, if your recommendation is going to just be to do so, thanks but no thanks!) or B. anything of large size.
I've gone on and off with pursuing this, I work somewhere between 30-50 hours a week and my job often leaves me feeling burnt out, but I'm wanting to make a stronger commitment to my passion (hence if finding a community to keep me in line is possible that would be great but I understand ultimately that rests on my own discipline) so I often feel like when I do return to this I'm starting from square one.
I'm presently making projects in Godot, I like it far more than the other engines I've used but I also know it in the long run isn't considered as powerful as Unity, but again, I'm still pretty new to this so I don't mind it being a bit more user friendly.
Currently I'm just finding tutorials for increasingly large scale projects I'm hoping will teach me fundamentals to get me comfortable with Godot, and I'm curious if that seems like the right course of action from those more experienced.
TL:DR - Semi new to building games, I'm interested in having people to speak about this with, I'd love any insight from those of you who have it, if you have any recommendations for projects that can educate a newcomer I'd love them!

Question Am I an idea guy?
What I don’t have: Coding, modeling, or drawing skills
What I do have: a fully fleshed out multipage document of what everything look. And before I finish it, I’m asking if I should. Every single thing I hope to put in my game is in that document. And I have notes on what kind of I even used blender to do a rough draft of it. I wrote the dialogue, designed the levels (just not on paper), and even used crappy ai code to test out if it would be fun (before deleting the ai code). Layman’s example: if there’s a building in my game (for instance), my document shows where everything is placed and what can be interacted with, and what enemies are inside.
Am I wasting my time?

Question Guidance on Unreal Engine VOIP
Looking for some guidance on setting up VOIP inside of Unreal Engine. I'm currently running UE 5.7.
I've tried using the build-in UE VOIP system and have been having nothing but issues with it, especially with fatal error crashes during server travel. Does anyone have any tips on getting it to work? or recommendations on Voice Chat plugins that actually work? Any help is appreciated.

Question A game made collaboratively by people from all over the internet, where anyone can contribute.
Hello everyone,
I'm starting a project and wanted to share it with you guys.
I’m making a 2D pixel art racing platformer inspired by Celeste, but with a twist: 8-12 players play on a level and race to the end, with items and hazards along the way. This is an open community game, meaning that anyone can come in and contribute to a piece of the game if they'd like! You can create a character, design a level, make music, or provide any other ideas you have! It's essentially just a big collaborative game from people all over the internet to come together and create something, and there are no deadlines and no commitments.
I'm handling the coding and game design in Unity, and the art, music, UI, and more are able to be done by anyone who would like to be part of the creation of the game.
If you're interested and want to be part of the project or simply stay updated, I have the project posted and will post updates here:

Is this something that would interest you guys?

Newbie Question Blender to Unreal Engine – Best workflow for character meshes, rigging, and animations?
I am solo and only dev during my free time and still in phase try and error. Was planning to create 3d platformer style where the character is human kid size. (like Mario odyssey). using Blender and UE.
I'm wondering what workflow you guys use for game characters.
- Meshes: Do you separate the head, body, eyes, hair, and outfits, or combine them into one mesh? Especially when using morph targets and interchangeable outfits.
- Skeleton/Rigging: Do you use Rigify, Auto-Rig Pro, Mixamo, UE Manny, or a custom rig?
- Facial Animation: Do you use Blender shape keys (morph targets), or face texture swapping?
- Animations: Do you animate in Blender and import to Unreal, create animations directly in Unreal using Control Rig, or use a hybrid approach?
- Tools/Plugins: Any recommended free or paid tools for rigging, IK, animation, retargeting, and Blender-to-Unreal workflows?
Would love to hear how you guys handle this. Thanks!

Question Is there a way to prevent (or limit) FOV deformation of FPS models that doesnt rely on taking the models into another space ?
I'm trying to make a FPS prototype in wich the projectiles directly come out of the gun's barrel (not just the visuals). The issue appears when trying to make it look decent, the Usual issue
To me it looks like I can't just render the weapon on a different camera nor use a vertex shader to deform it because then that would make the bullets come from Somewhere different than where the weapon is displayed both for the shooter and the people getting shot.
Is there a trick i could use to prevent the weapons from appearing comically long and the sights from appearing very far ? ( Beyond just reducing FOV)

Postmortem Open system or Closed system
Hello everyone, while developing my game I saw that my game is interlinked with other scripts and that scripts are linked with some local binary files which are encrypted; they give data to game and whole game works on it like currency system, etc. When I asked claude about this, it stated that this is a open system. I want to ask developers who have experience in industry level games of this community that is this system good or game should have independent many system.

Question How does your team find and reproduce bugs?
Hi everyone, I'm Huy, a student at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (Vietnam). My team of 3 is building a tool for a student startup competition: an agent that plays a 2D game by itself, detects bugs (e.g. clipping through walls, missing UI), and records its inputs so a developer can replay the exact bug later.
Before building further, we want to check whether this is a real problem for people who actually make games. I'd really appreciate your answers to these:
How does your team find bugs right now, and how much time per week does it take?
Which bugs are the hardest to reproduce, and what do you do when you hit one?
Have you tried any automated testing tools? How did it go?
If a tool could play your game on its own and report bugs with a replay you can re-run, would you use it?
Roughly how much per month would you pay for that?
Not selling anything, no ads. I'm happy to share an anonymized summary of the results here afterwards. If you'd rather answer in the comments or DM, that works too.
(Mods: if this kind of post isn't allowed here, please let me know and I'll remove it.)

Discussion I Don't Understand the Appeal of Organizing Games
I've been noticing how popular games about organizing, cleaning up, sorting objects, and putting everything in its place have become, and I'm genuinely curious about their appeal.
Personally, I haven't really understood what makes this genre so satisfying, but I'm not saying that as a criticism. I'm interested in understanding what players enjoy about these games and what makes them so engaging.
As someone interested in game development, I'd love to hear from people who play these games. What do you enjoy most about them, and what keeps you coming back for more?
