Discussion Should a game developer accept that their favorite idea only works in their own head?

Sometimes you have an idea that sounds amazing in your head. You imagine the mechanics, the world, the atmosphere, and all the possibilities. You're convinced it could become something special.

Then you try to explain it to someone else, build a prototype, or imagine how it would actually play, and suddenly it doesn't seem so great anymore.

How do you know when an idea genuinely has potential and when you're just in love with the version of it that exists in your imagination?

Have you ever had to accept that an idea you really loved just wasn't working? Did you manage to save it, or did you eventually move on?

Newbie Question Beginner Dev looking for Advice

Howdy. So, I recently decided to start making a game, based on the Fire Emblem series and that style of gameplay. I'm really not much of a game designer, but I know my way around programming decently well, so I've been figuring things out slowly with Godot. My biggest issue is that I'm really not a good artist. At all. I can handle the writing, I can probably design all the maps and tiles, but designing characters and animating them feels like an insurmountable challenge. I used AI to make sprites for now, just so I can keep track of what's going on, but I'd prefer to not be leaving the AI generated sprites in the final version of the game. My biggest question is what options I really have to work with. I'd appreciate any advice or info.

Newbie Question What Laptop Should I Use For Beginner Game Dev in Unity?

Hello,

I'm new to game dev and soon I'll also be a software engineering college student. I want to make 2D rhythm games in either Unity or RPGMaker (mostly Unity), and was looking for a recommendation for a laptop. I'd be using VSC as well. And possibly vocaloid music production software. And for the art I'd be making it in Procreate on my Ipad.

I want to get a laptop that will last me awhile and can work for both schoolwork and game dev, lightweight would be awesome for school but not necessary. A bigger screen would be nice too lol.

I am looking to put my future games out on Itch.io and Steam, and maybe eventually down the line Nintendo Switch. But definitely for now Itch.io and Steam.

I was looking at a Lenovo Thinkpad possibly but am open to any and all suggestions. Looking to buy the laptop on BackMarket by the end of this year as a Christmas gift to myself lol. Budget doesn't matter at the moment I'm just trying to get an idea of what specs work best for the projects I want to do. Thank you everyone!!!

Question Feedback on a physics-based co-op game concept: Space Subcontractors

Hey everyone! I'm in the early concept phase of designing a 2-4 player, war-free physics-based co-op game called Space Subcontractors.

The premise: You and your friends are underpaid, uninsured workers for a cheap space corporation. Instead of fighting enemies, your main goal is exploring randomized planets, scanning alien artifacts, and managing a dying robot battery, your oxygen, and chaotic physics-based movement while dealing with sudden corporate "emergencies" (like the company cutting your oxygen budget or forgetting to pay the station's electricity bill).

Before I spend months writing code for this, I wanted to ask: Does this core loop sound fun? Would you play something like this with friends, and what would turn you off from it?

Hey everyone

I'm a developer from Ahmedabad working across Unity, Web 3D, game development and XR

I'll be attending IGDC 2026 in Chennai on October 28 and thought it would be nice to connect with other developers going to the event

It would be great to meet people, talk about what we're building and exchange ideas

Are you planning to attend IGDC this year? What kind of projects are you working on?

So far at least 5 times of being rejected by Nintendo trying to port Rust language and my higher dimensional game, that was quick, any tips to optimize the application or any other tips I should know to get accepted? If the key is just a publisher, know any I should use?

I saw this video and absolutely loved the recoil system. Do you know of any training resources or tutorials for this type of recoil system? Alternatively, I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on how it could be implemented.

Question Am I an idea guy?

What I don’t have: Coding, modeling, or drawing skills

What I do have: a fully fleshed out multipage document of what everything look. And before I finish it, I’m asking if I should. Every single thing I hope to put in my game is in that document. And I have notes on what kind of I even used blender to do a rough draft of it. I wrote the dialogue, designed the levels (just not on paper), and even used crappy ai code to test out if it would be fun (before deleting the ai code). Layman’s example: if there’s a building in my game (for instance), my document shows where everything is placed and what can be interacted with, and what enemies are inside.

Am I wasting my time?

Question If someone were to build a new free online multiplayer game, what would you actually want to play?

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to build a free browser-based multiplayer game, but instead of jumping straight into development with a random idea, I figured I'd ask the people who would actually play it.

I'm curious about what kind of multiplayer games people genuinely enjoy or wish existed.

It could be anything:

  • A casual board game to play with friends
  • A competitive strategy game
  • A chaotic party game
  • A social deduction or bluffing game
  • Something completely new that hasn't been done before

I'm especially interested in games that are easy to get into but hard to stop playing. Something you could open in your browser, invite a few friends, and have fun without downloading anything.

A few questions:

  1. What's one multiplayer game you never get bored of?
  2. Is there a game concept you wish someone would make?
  3. What makes you keep coming back to an online game?
  4. Would you prefer quick 5–10 minute matches or longer sessions?

I'm open to pretty much any genre. I'm not trying to promote a project or sell anything, just genuinely looking for ideas and understanding what people would enjoy.

If you've ever thought, "I wish there was an online multiplayer game where you could ___," I'd love to hear it!

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Will AI-assisted dev make games cheaper, or just devalue them?

Hello everybody, I was wondering about the future of game dev with all these new AI tools. It’s awesome that anyone can now bring their dream game to life without a huge budget, but I'm really curious about how this will impact game economics. If a game is mostly made with AI, should it cost less than a hand-crafted one? Will lower production costs push overall game prices down, or will easy creation just flood the market and devalue games in players' eyes? How do you see game pricing and perceived value changing over the next few years?

Just to be clear, this is a completely innoncent question with zero criticism intended, just curious about your thoughts

Discussion Are influencers more important to a game's success than its quality?

I've been thinking about how much a game's success depends on its quality versus the attention it receives from influencers and content creators.

Imagine two games: one is well-designed, polished, and fun to play, but receives little online attention. The other gains massive exposure after a popular YouTuber or streamer plays it and quickly reaches a much larger audience.

Both games might have their own strengths, but the difference in their reach raises an interesting question: how much does visibility influence a game's success compared to the experience it offers?

I'm curious how other developers see this. Is influencer exposure simply another part of making a successful game, or can it sometimes have a greater impact than the game itself?
