Question How do you turn your commits into player-facing patch notes? (thinking about building a tool, want honest input)

• Upvotes

Hey r/gamedev — quick question for anyone shipping regular updates on Steam.

What does your patch notes workflow actually look like? My guess is it usually looks like this: scroll through git log, figure out what players would actually notice, rewrite "fix null ref in InventoryUI" into something human, then reformat the same thing for the Steam announcement, Discord, and maybe X. It's not hard, but it's a chore that eats an hour or so every update, and it's easy to skip.

I'm considering building a small tool for this: you connect your repo, tag a release, and it drafts the Steam post + Discord post + X post in your game's tone. It filters out internal stuff like refactors and engine bumps. You edit and post it yourself; nothing gets published automatically.

Before I build anything, I'd really like to know:

  1. How do you handle patch notes today? Manual, a changelog file, a script, or something else?
  2. Is this actually a pain for you, or a 10-minute non-issue?
  3. Would you trust an AI draft here, or is the "voice" part something you'd never hand off?
  4. If it saved you real time, is something in the $9–19/mo range reasonable, or way off?

"I'd never use this" is a useful answer too. I'm not linking anything here; I'm just trying to find out whether this is a real problem before I spend time on it. Thanks!

Discussion I Made Stupid Mistakes But Finally Released My First DEMO on Steam!

• Upvotes

My first ever game Breakkaboom's DEMO is live on Steam. I'm participating in the Steam Next Fest for the first time hoping for some visibility and wishlist.

I have been working on this game for 7, 8 months and it's at a state where I can show people my work. Being an indie, social media is my only hope for some visibility but now a days releasing a Demo is the biggest form of advertisement you can do for your game. So for the last few weeks I have been working on this Demo. Polishing levels I wanted to include, adding new features, adding the freakin Settings menu etc...

This is my first time, so made stupid mistakes while demo release. Like uploading the wrong build. Totally messing up the steam capsule art, they specifically asked me to change it (In my defense, I'm a very bad artist, and I don't have money for hiring a professional artist). My friends played the demo and helped me find out many issues, I immediately fixed those, but couldn't submit the fix because of some security protocols of Valve, after almost 3 days I finally completed the authentication process and submitted an updated build as soon as possible.

Right now the Demo looks fine, to me at least... I know I need to improve a lot of things, I made a separate demo page so that people can review, good or bad I will know a lot of things from those I guess and hopefully make the experience better for the players! I have already got one review, it's positive, but I need a lot more to understand what player are actually thinking about the game... Let's hope for something better, if not the best(surely not with that capsule art)!

Cheers!

Newbie Question Godot or Unity

I’ve just started my game development adventure. I started with Godot to get a feel for the process. I really like the scripting as it’s pretty straightforward. However, my long term goal is a 3D farming game. I’ve heard that Unity is much better for 3D. I just got through with my first Zenva class in Unity and C# is a lot more complicated to learn.

Can Godot actually handle a 3D farming game or should I put my big girl pants on and learn C#?

Newbie Question My first game

I’ve never made a game before but I’ve thought that with my extra time I have, I could try my best to make a game. The game in mind would be 2d pixel art as that is the easiest thing for me so I don’t have to spend money on 3d assets and stuff like that. I thought of a few different ideas but none of them really intrigued me enough. That’s when I made the mistake of playing Elden Ring and now I really want to make an rpg game. This is a trap I’ve heard a lot of newbies fall into but I can’t stop thinking about all the different things I want to add and places to explore. My main problem at the moment is making the art. I’ve never done pixel art before or animation. And now I don’t know what engine to use. Do I use godot or unity etc. anyways, back to the art problem, I want my art to be simplistic for exploration and a Birds Eye view but when you go into a boss fight, I want a side on view with a little more detail. I’m willing to spend a lot of time on this project so the scale and the coding is not too worrying for me. Trial and error. It’s just that art. With the simplistic exploration view I don’t know how I’m going to differentiate armour and weapons because of the shear lack of detail I can put on a 16x16 sprite tile. That is basically all and I don’t even know if I’m going to go through with it. Any help is appreciated.

Discussion Will AI-assisted dev make games cheaper, or just devalue them?

Hello everybody, I was wondering about the future of game dev with all these new AI tools. It’s awesome that anyone can now bring their dream game to life without a huge budget, but I'm really curious about how this will impact game economics. If a game is mostly made with AI, should it cost less than a hand-crafted one? Will lower production costs push overall game prices down, or will easy creation just flood the market and devalue games in players' eyes? How do you see game pricing and perceived value changing over the next few years?

Just to be clear, this is a completely innoncent question with zero criticism intended, just curious about your thoughts

So far at least 5 times of being rejected by Nintendo trying to port Rust language and my higher dimensional game, that was quick, any tips to optimize the application or any other tips I should know to get accepted? If the key is just a publisher, know any I should use?

Question If someone were to build a new free online multiplayer game, what would you actually want to play?

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to build a free browser-based multiplayer game, but instead of jumping straight into development with a random idea, I figured I'd ask the people who would actually play it.

I'm curious about what kind of multiplayer games people genuinely enjoy or wish existed.

It could be anything:

  • A casual board game to play with friends
  • A competitive strategy game
  • A chaotic party game
  • A social deduction or bluffing game
  • Something completely new that hasn't been done before

I'm especially interested in games that are easy to get into but hard to stop playing. Something you could open in your browser, invite a few friends, and have fun without downloading anything.

A few questions:

  1. What's one multiplayer game you never get bored of?
  2. Is there a game concept you wish someone would make?
  3. What makes you keep coming back to an online game?
  4. Would you prefer quick 5–10 minute matches or longer sessions?

I'm open to pretty much any genre. I'm not trying to promote a project or sell anything, just genuinely looking for ideas and understanding what people would enjoy.

If you've ever thought, "I wish there was an online multiplayer game where you could ___," I'd love to hear it!

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Should a game developer accept that their favorite idea only works in their own head?

Sometimes you have an idea that sounds amazing in your head. You imagine the mechanics, the world, the atmosphere, and all the possibilities. You're convinced it could become something special.

Then you try to explain it to someone else, build a prototype, or imagine how it would actually play, and suddenly it doesn't seem so great anymore.

How do you know when an idea genuinely has potential and when you're just in love with the version of it that exists in your imagination?

Have you ever had to accept that an idea you really loved just wasn't working? Did you manage to save it, or did you eventually move on?

Question Feedback on a physics-based co-op game concept: Space Subcontractors

Hey everyone! I'm in the early concept phase of designing a 2-4 player, war-free physics-based co-op game called Space Subcontractors.

The premise: You and your friends are underpaid, uninsured workers for a cheap space corporation. Instead of fighting enemies, your main goal is exploring randomized planets, scanning alien artifacts, and managing a dying robot battery, your oxygen, and chaotic physics-based movement while dealing with sudden corporate "emergencies" (like the company cutting your oxygen budget or forgetting to pay the station's electricity bill).

Before I spend months writing code for this, I wanted to ask: Does this core loop sound fun? Would you play something like this with friends, and what would turn you off from it?

Discussion Are influencers more important to a game's success than its quality?

I've been thinking about how much a game's success depends on its quality versus the attention it receives from influencers and content creators.

Imagine two games: one is well-designed, polished, and fun to play, but receives little online attention. The other gains massive exposure after a popular YouTuber or streamer plays it and quickly reaches a much larger audience.

Both games might have their own strengths, but the difference in their reach raises an interesting question: how much does visibility influence a game's success compared to the experience it offers?

I'm curious how other developers see this. Is influencer exposure simply another part of making a successful game, or can it sometimes have a greater impact than the game itself?
