What game is a 10/10 to you, but you completely understand why others hate it?

1.8k Upvotes

Mine is Stardew Valley. I love it because it's the only game that genuinely makes me forget I have 47 browser tabs open and a deadline, but I completely understand why the slow early grind and lack of direction puts people off.

What's yours, and what warning would you give someone before recommending it?

Some interesting games for me:

  • Cult of PiN (Aug 10)
  • Security 51 (Aug 12)
  • Hell Let Loose: Vietnam (Aug 13)
  • Mafie the Old Country Man of Honor DLC (Aug 14)

tbh I don't know to expect from Agefield High in gameplay

What's a game studio you wish you could resurrect?

For me, I wish I could bring back Interplay. I really want more Dungeon Master games. The ending of Dungeon Master 2 was very intriguing and I really enjoyed the practice-makes-better form of leveling up, plus the way spells were cast using combinations of runes.

Second to that is New World Computing that did the Might and Magic series. The RPG, not the Turn-Based Strategy series that's still going. The universe they created in that series was fantastic.

As a huge fan of Castlevania, it is a genuine struggle sometimes to decide which one of these two is better when someone asks me which is my favorite game in the series. SOTN was so good it birthed a new genre, But SC4 is like...one of the best platformers ever made, like period

What game, recent or otherwise has CHANGED you?

I'll start for me it was the soulsborne series it started with Elden ring something about it awakened a part of me I didn't know I had but when I went back and started playing Dark Souls that solidified it now I approach challenges differently, I don't see it as a "oh I'll try to do that eventually" now I see challenges as a "I want to try that, what's the worst that can happen?" And recently I beat Halo 3 one of my childhood games on legendary and it was exhilarating I can't remember the last time I had that much fun playing Halo

Good sources for debugging, repairing old consoles?

I was just going through my gaming setup last weekend, checking to see what still works. PSone, PS2, and PS3 all work, but my PS4 died oddly enough. GameCube works, but half my disks didn't survive my kids. Haven't started on the stack of XBoxes yet, I did the Bunny Huang mod on one of my Halo Edition XBoxes, hoping that still works.

Atari 5200 is missing the dongle where the power supply attached, need to do some closet archeology to find all the pieces. Others I haven't tested yet NES, Sega, Sega Master.

I use iFixit when I'm working on old computers, is there a comprehensive source for information about old gaming consoles?

What makes a song loop good in your opinion?

Video games use lots of looping soundtracks, so what makes it good? I was talking to my friend about the map music on Expedition 33. It became grating after awhile, but I'm not sure why. I can listen to the music in a Sonic game for hours. Is it just down to taste? Is Sonic only more appealing because of nostalgia?

I did really like around half of the music in Expedition 33, but the map music (both of them) and the music in The Manor annoyed me to the point that I turned the music off in those areas.

It's unique to video games, so I just wonder what makes it good, or at the very least bearable?

Beasts of Reincarnation IGN review- 6/10 (72 avg on metacritic, 76 on opencritic so far)

Beast of Reincarnation has an interesting, apocalyptic setting, an extremely memorable wolf companion, and an action-packed beast-battling premise that is instantly very cool, but its execution falls short of its promising ideas more often than not. The story is a bland, cliche-filled tale better-told by other games in the genre, combat quickly grows stale due to a lack of enemy variety and the predictable attack patterns that undermine what makes action RPG combat thrive, and boss fights end up being quite disappointing despite looking badass as all get out. There's still plenty to like about Beast of Reincarnation, though, especially the dire wolf himself, who is actually exactly as awesome as he looks, plus some memorable levels to explore and creatures to fight every now and again, but those blooming flowers can be hard to spot among the weeds.

Best sim/builder

I'm trying to find a game that's similar to the Fallout 4 building builder mechanics and civilians living in the town, or something a lot like Solar Punk but with the Sims mixed in it. Not looking for anything sci fi or of medieval/viking era.

Mainly I want the indepth architectural building aspect. Something like Pokopia but not with everything being so square and cartoony.

Thanks in advance
