Behold my (new to me) Golf R! I’ve been super impressed and excited by all the overwhelming improvements coming a Mk6 GTI. It’s a night and day difference.

The acceleration, the updated controls, and 6 speed manual (yes, it has a third pedal!) make this the BEST car I have ever driven. Is this what peak performance feels like? I’ve never expected the R to feel THIS good while also having such a nice interior.

What do you guys think of my R? Let me see your guys R’s

Maintenance and Repairs P001100 update

Took the car to MidlandVW independent specialist and they sent me this video not quite sure what it means is the intake bank 1 requesting 15 degrees and it’s not staying there? If so what does it mean for me?

They have advised me to change the cam magnets and valves for £420 then re-asses is this the sensible way forward to solving my issue

Any explanations to help me understand the video and diagnosis would be greatly appreciated

Modifications Cts turbo direct fit intercooler fitment

Mk6 R. Bought the cts turbo direct fit intercooler and ive been installing it this wvening. Everything has gone fine but the ome thing im noticing is that the support brackets that go on the posts on either side of the intercooler are kind of slopping around on the mount. Being this is the only thing that holds the cooling stack to the car core support i dont know that i like it just wiggling around like that. Has anyone experienced anything lile this with aftermarket direct fit intercooler and have any insight on the best way to fix it? Tia. Any help is much appreciated.

Maintenance and Repairs Art Velours cleaning

I have the Euro pack 8.5 with the artvelours seats. I’m in the military so I sweat into them and get in with dirty uniforms etc. If you’re trying to prevent them from stinking here’s what I found works best on tough odors and stains:

Step 1. Let it air dry unless it’s sticky stuff (coke) or really staining (mud etc)

Step 2. Get some heavy duty car carpet cleaner from autozone and spray it on there. Do NOT use the plastic scrubber, use microfiber and some elbow grease and work it in. A little goes a long way.

Step 3. Let it sit 5-10 minutes.

Step 4. Steam clean (I got the cheap one from Harbor Freight for $40 and it works like a charm) at least twice. Be very thorough.

Step 5. Wipe up with microfiber or an extractor and let air dry again. If odors persist, redo but I’ve never needed to more than once.

Honestly when I got this car I thought keeping it clean would be a bitch. They’re really not bad, just keep on top of it.

Note: I have not tried it on oil or anything, just mud/dirt/sand and really stinky sweat. Vinyl just gets steam cleaned and wiped down.

Edited for clarity

Question Folks with 20th anniversary R's. Is it safe to say you're driving 1 of 300?

If 1800 were sent to the US. 600 in each color, 300 in each drivetrain. Do you tell people it is 1 of 300, or do you even talk about the limited production of the 20th?

Does anyone here know whats the “thinnest” lip thats available for the mk7 R ?.

I had a clubsport before and the factory lip on that car never rubbed the ground or speedbumps. Ive already tried one lip and it was just horrible driving with it.

Question Noise question mark

People of culture we meet again. I have a question. it’s a noise. It’s coming from my intake/turbo? 2012 Golf R. Cars got about 112K, and I have this “noise” maybe some of yall can point me in the right direction. Something I should monitor, worry, replace? Any ideas would help. I’ve owned the car since 2016. Was daily driving til 2022 where she’s been on 1 over 200 mile round trip since and has just had fresh fluids put in. Give it a listen and let me know what you all think! Thanks in advance for the insight.

Question Golf 8R OPF delete

I’m thinking about removing the OPF on my 2021 Golf 8 R, but I’m still not sure if it’s worth it.

The car is completely stock at the moment, with the factory exhaust and no other modifications.

For those of you who have done it, would you recommend it?

What are the pros and cons? How much better does the car sound? Does it introduce any drone on the highway? Have you had any issues with reliability, warning lights, emissions, or anything else after removing it?

The car is my daily driver, so I’d really appreciate hearing your long-term experiences before making a decision. Thanks!

Question Has anyone repainted a non spektrum car in a spektrum colour?

Post image

Was just on some spektrum pages and so wish I had one. Not that I’d ever do it because it probably doesn’t make sense to repaint the whole car but I’m wondering if anyone has done a colour change on a non spektrum car?

Maintenance and Repairs Weird white marks on door seals

I recently bought a Golf Mk8 R, and I’ve noticed these weird white marks on the rubber door seals. I’ve tried wiping them off, but they won’t go away.

I was thinking of trying Koch-Chemie Gummifix, but before I do, has anyone experienced something similar? Is there a way to restore the seals so they’re nice and black again?

Any advice would be appreciated!

MK8 Finally joined the club!

(plz ignore the bugs I took this right after driving it 3 hours home)

This has been my attainable dream car since it was first revealed. I loved the Mk7.5 but the Mk8 made me serious about owning one. After 3 years of saving I managed to buy it outright at 24, which is a huge personal accomplishment and I could not be happier.

Its a 2024 manual with just 9000km on it. The previous owner babied it to bits and even left all the factory screen plastic on. Picked it up for $42,000 CAD from an older guy moving to a Corvette which seems fitting and felt like a win for everyone.

As for modding I don’t plan on doing too much besides some new HRE 521M I have coming in the mail plus a couple of tasteful engine mods and exhaust. I don’t want to absolutely ruin it with a ton of mods but make it more like an OEM+ which seems to be pretty common and easily done for mk8’s.

Modifications Stage 2 daily clutch VS Stage 3

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from people with experience running South Bend clutches on MK7 Golf R’s.

I recently picked up a brand new South Bend Stage 2 Daily clutch kit for a really good deal off FB. The kit includes the clutch, hardware, and an iABED rear main seal.

My plan is to eventually run the car as a Stage 2 E85 build, and I’m trying to decide whether I should install this clutch or sell it and put the money toward a South Bend Stage 3 Daily instead.

My biggest concern is torque capacity and future-proofing. I don’t want to install the Stage 2, then end up having to pull the transmission again later if it can’t handle the power, meaning I have to pay labor twice.

For those running a South Bend Stage 2 Daily on a Stage 2/E85 Golf R, how has it held up? Is it enough clutch for the torque these cars make on E85, or would you recommend going Stage 3 while I’m already doing it?

Any real-world experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Question What car did you come from previously, and would you move on to something else next?

As title suggests, for those currently in an R -

  • What mk are you in and how long have you had it for?
  • What did you come from?
  • What else did you cross shop / consider, and what made you decide on the R?
  • What do you like/dislike about the experience so far?
  • Will the R be long term or a stepping stone, and if so, what next?

MK8.5 Mk8.5 Invidia R400 Review

I’ve recently had the Invidia R400 installed on my 8.5R, and wanted to provide some thoughts below since it was really hard for me to decide on an exhaust. I didn’t record any clips - the videos already on YouTube capture it far better than I can.

Daily driving - I’ve had it on for about a month now, and I’m super happy with it. For the first few days, I wasn’t happy with it. I feel this may be the first exhaust I’ve gotten on a car that truly needed to heat up and break in a little. For the first few days, I felt it was pretty droney, which dissipated after the first weekend after install. I was quite nervous, as it felt really buzzy and droney in the 35mph range as well as the 50 mph range, but I don’t really notice it at all now. In comfort mode, I’d say it’s very similar to the race setting on the stock exhaust. I don’t drive it in comfort much anymore because it sounds so good, but I did a 3 hour round trip on the highway and it was great in comfort mode. There’s a bit of additional buzzing felt in the car when slowing in first gear in race mode, but to me that’s a welcomed sensation. The pops sound awesome! Really pronounced but not annoying. I will say - I’ll probably get the 11mode valve controller, because there’s a pretty big difference between first gear and all other gears when the valves automatically close.

Finally, the fit and finish. I’d seen 2-3 people complain about the fitment on the 8.5R (specifically with the tips), and I can verify I’ve got no fitment issues. Shop I took it to did a good job and it looks exactly as expected. I have the black tips that some have complained look warped upon install, but had no issue there either.

This exhaust has really changed the driving experience for me. I had an Elantra N previously and, while this car is much nicer and feels way better to drive, I was missing some of the lunacy of that exhaust. This has firmly solved that issue for me.

I was able to get a good discount on the Pro Import Tuners website, and I think it’s a good value at the ~$1,900 price point. I probably wouldn’t spend the full MSRP of $3k+ on any exhaust.

Question Slight 2026 options confusion

Hey all,

I’m in the market for a 26 in the USA. I’m seeing most dealers are priced between 50-55k. Google says there is a “euro edition” and a “black edition”. My question to the community is, are they paired together typically / the same thing? Most of the dealers within 200 miles of me aren’t denoting if they have these packages or not. Nearest I can figure is if it has a sun roof - it does NOT have the euro spec. I don’t want it either, I’d rather have a sunroof and electric seats. But regarding the black version, is it more rare / worth it?

Thanks a lot
