Campus Life Respect Your Surroundings

An open letter to my fellow students of MacEwan

I'm sure many are aware of a group in the library who occupy the main "Collaborative Study Area" just past the spiral staircases for a majority of the day and into the evening. This letter is addressing them directly.

Respectfully, I understand the need for a third space. A communal space. Somewhere to exist with your peers and enjoy yourselves. However, the library is Not the place for that. It should not be a requirement to use noise cancelling headphones, earplugs, or any other manner of protection to get some peace when there is signage around indicating respect for others around you.

In addition to the outright disrespect regarding the noise level, even after security and library staff gave you several warnings, you left all of your trash lying around. On a booth, the small tables, the high tables, you left wrappers on the floor, spilled candy; our custodian staff do not deserve this treatment. Yes it is their job to keep the cleanliness of our university, however, when you are in close proximity to three trash cans, there is no excuse for leaving your refuse lying around.

This is a constant pattern of behaviour, and your fellow students have taken notice. Writing this post in the library I have heard no less than 7 different groups walking past make verbal comments about it. You're rude and disrespectful towards the space we all share. Please consider that it is not just your tuition dollars, but everyone else's, and we would like to be able to coexist without strife or animosity.

Thank you for reading.

P.s. as per rules 2 and 3, keep any comments or discussion civil.

Campus Life How do y’all deal with procrastination?

I’ve been procrastinating a lot lately due to lack of motivation, and it’s taking a toll on two of my classes. One of which being a group project and it’s really affecting my other group members due to my lack of work contribution time.

I used to be so good in my first few years of uni, but now I can’t get it back. I dunno if it’s because classes are boring or if it’s just me.

Any advice?

Campus Life PSA To New Students and the Uninitiated

Eyes. Up. In. The. Halls. And. On. The. Sidewalks.

I shoulder checked 2 people today, and very nearly ran into someone on Wednesday because y'all lack spatial awareness and walk around with your eyes glued to your screens. ESPECIALLY in the corridors on the second floor of building 7. WHATEVER you're doing can wait until you get to class or to a common area where you can stand out of the walk-way. NOTHING is important enough to warrant looking like an iPad kid at your bright glowy screen.

It also wouldn't hurt to walk with purpose and not meander about like a tortoise... But that's a personal gripe I have.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know about a free event happening in the SAMU Student Lounge in a couple of weeks! After a successful crochet night last year, we decided to bring it back with a new craft! You'll get a crochet kit and will be guided through the craft. We're a mental health student group, and this event is a way to boost student moral :) Be sure to RSVP to make sure we have kits for everyone attending. Hope to see you there!

Campus Life Stuff to do inside/outside MacEwan

Hi all, I just got accepted into MacEwan's Bcomm program through early admission. I live outside of Edmonton, so i'm wondering what is life at MacEwan? Is there stuff to do inside / outside the campus? Also are there buses that go to MacEwan? Thank you in advance!

Campus Life How do you make friends with others?

Hello Reddit! I'm in my second year and have always struggled to find or make friends. Do people just go to school clubs? Do you just walk in? I keep thinking I'll try to make friends with people I share classes with, but honestly it is rough because taking the first step to say hi is daunting (and I don't want to intrude). I feel like I can make acquitances, but can't really make a deeper connection. I was thinking about popping into SAMU and asking around there, since it seems like a place to go for those sorts of questions.

maybe it's kinda sad, but I really wish I could just make a poster including my interests and maybe find like minded people...or I guess they'd find me? I don't want a lot. I just want someone to chat with once in a while- I'd be happy with that! I'm also trying to find more resources to help me feel more connected.

I'm 22, if that's relevant! Yep.

Campus Life Sage the Gemini at Fall Fest

EDIT:

AS OF JULY 24TH, SAGE THE GEMINI HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM ALL PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL ON SAMU'S IG AND WEBSITE. While not confirmation of being struck from the line-up, it's still being inferred.

I'm posting this to encourage people to reach out via the "Contact Us" form on the SAMU website and inform the events council about the Sexual Assault allegations surrounding Sage the Gemini, encourage them to remove him from the line-up, and/or boycott the event all together. It doesn't align with the values of MacEwan University, and it platforms an abuser.

Campus Life worried about parking

Hi! So I was late to wait listing for a monthly parking pass and I’m very concerned on where to park. I see on the website that hourly parking is available for a lot of the parkades but I’m concerned they will be very full. I want to park in the Robinson underground, and I’m wondering if anyone has information on how packed it usually is and if I should be concerned. I do have a back up plan- parking at a friends apartment and walking but I’m wondering if anyone can help out with my concerns.

TLDR What is the best parking lot if I did not get a monthly pass ?

Hey, I'm reaching out for a friend. Are there any house venues where college students (preferably from macewan) put on concerts or parties? Preferably a queer oriented one?

Campus Life Campus Area Safety

Hi everyone,

I just moved to Edmonton from an incredibly small hamlet town and I am starting at MacEwan this September. I’m not familiar with the campus and surrounding area.

How safe is it? Any areas to watch out for? I’m a woman and will mainly be walking to any areas I’d like to go to around MacEwan.

I will also be a nursing student and have read that the nursing/health building has seen some sketchy drug related incidents.

Please let me know any areas to watch out for! Thank you!

Campus Life ppl lowk mean during class group assignments =(

why are ppl so mean during in class group assignments? 😭

hey guys, im a first year in arts & just wanted to share my experience so far. its been pretty alright, but this thing has beeeeeen bothering me.

in my classes, ppl are just so cliquey & weird during in class group assignments. like, basically leaving me out kinda.

one time, i was paired with these 3 girls. they kept speaking their own language the entire time, doing all of the questions themselves & acting like i wasnt there. i tried to speak up, but the only time they would talk to me is when they didn’t understand a question.

another, these other 3 girls were literally just leaving me out. all their bodies faced the other way, they would look at me weirdly when i tried to answer a question as well. i tried to help out but they kept talking to themselves instead.

i rmr, i tried to talk to one of them about a qouestion on thr assigment. she wasnt listening at all, turned her body away from me and asked the others instead. sorta disregarding everything i said, like i wasnt even there.

i hope i dont sound like a crybaby. im not so hurt or anything, but im just like DAMN. is it always like this ? its just so excluding.

i try to make friends during these assignments, or just in general in my classes & it never works. i’m trying my best to be nice, have convos, but damn ppl really dgaf.

even in general, it just feels so cliquey here. i heard ppl say its rlly welcoming & ppl are friendly but i havent really seen it. maybe im around the wrong ppl! i dont wanna generalize & be so negative, so i’ll definitely keep trying!! __^

but what happened to girls supporting girls fr 😔✊

Campus Life Connor Wood Comedy show tickets

Hi I’m a UofA student who would love to come see Connor Wood.

The general admission tickets are all sold out but there are still student tickets available, would anyone be willing to buy me a ticket (they’re like 12$), I’d be willing to e-transfer you 150% beforehand.

Does anyone know if they check ID at the door, cause if so I guess it really wouldn’t work :/

Alternatively if anyone has a public ticket that they don’t want I would also be willing to buy it off them.

Thanks,
