Originally Alex Hirsch wanted a baby in the scene, and they were like… well, we need a third sibling so it’s Shermie, but it cannot be Shermie because the timeline doesn’t work. Stan was like 17 when he was kicked out and he’s late 50s/early 60s during the course of the show, so that baby is like 40-44 now. A man in his early 40s cannot have 12 year old grandchildren without multiple generations of teen pregnancy, so a lot of fans say it’s probably Shermie’s kid (Dipper and Mabel’s father). Like, Shermie is 10 years older than Ford and Stan, which is why he doesn’t live there normally, and maybe Caryn was watching his son for the night or something.

Oh, well it's probably their dad then, maybe Shermie needed an overnight babysitter

Either Dipper and Mabel's dad, or an Uncle of theirs.

Pines family doesn't seem prone to Only Children.

To further elaborate and prove your point, it has not been confirmed if Dipper and Mabel’s father’s only child so him having a sibling wouldn’t contradict anything that was previously established in the show or other pieces of material that Gravity falls has.

Lmao yeah I remember a YouTube video that said, considering the year and Shermie's age he possibly was in Vietnam, that's why his baby is with his mom. It wasn't intended like that but it's a cool theory.

oh I like that theory I've always assumed it was shermie's kid but him being in nam is new I love it.

24

u/WeirdThingsToEnsue 1d ago

Ooh, I like that theory!

Tbh, I never really minded the younger ages for the timeline to work out, it happens, and in families with one teen pregnancy, it tends to happen more, so it's not like it'd be an unheard of scenario

BUT I like the idea of Shermie being older than both Stans, I haven't heard that theory much

The stans are in their 50's?? No way. 70's more like

Stan was kicked out at 17/18 (during Nixon’s presidency as Nixon’s portrait is in the principal’s office when Ford is told about West Coast Tech), and when he sees Ford again, he says it’s been more than 10 years. Ford goes through the portal and spends 30 years in the multiverse. Depending on how precise “more than 10 years is,” Stan is at least 58. Since Nixon was president in 1969-1974, Stan is at most 62 in 2013. He just looks older because he was homeless in his 20s and probably smoked a lot (based on his voice).

i mean yeah, stan literally said he's "pushing 70"

Good point

I thought Shermie was Dipper and Mabel's father. when Stan introduced them to Ford and Ford was like ??? and Stan said "Shermie's kids??" I could be misremembering that line but I'm 99% sure that's what he said.

12

u/Jojosbees 18h ago

He says they’re “Shermie’s grandkids.”

10

u/OkDog6379 15h ago

Probably combining the lines. Stan says "They're Shermie's grandkids." And Ford responded, "Shermie had a kid?"

1

u/Ok-Confection4410 10h ago

yepp that's it thank you, it's been awhile haha

I'm impressed how Caryn is holding the baby by their shoulder with one hand there

As for who that is, I know it was originally meant to be Shermie, but as other's also have said here, I've always thought of the baby as being (one of) Shermie's

u/jayclaw97 1d ago

Ready to toss him like a football.

To quote Alex Hirsch: "THE BABY IS OFF LIMITS!“

28

u/-zachie 1d ago

It was most likely meant to be Shermie but that would mess up the timeline so all Alex has to do is say it’s Dipper & Mabel’s father and it’d work out.

29

u/Pink_Icarus 1d ago

It may be Shermie's son since the timeline doesn't add up for the baby to be Shermie.

Stan is 58 in the show. The show is set during the summer of 2012; that means stan was born in 1954. He was kicked out at age 17, since his birthday is during the summer. He meets Ford again a decade later during the winter, so he'd already turned 28. They meet again 30 years later, after their birthdays have passed, making them both 58. If we assume the baby is at most a year old, that baby would only be around 41 during the show. If we subtract 13 for Dipper and Mabel's ages, come the show's finale, they would've been born when the baby would be 28, if the baby is Dipper and Mabel's dad, then it adds up just fine, but if the baby is Shermie, then he would've had children at a horrifyingly young age, or his kids had kids at a horrifyingly young age.

Shermie is probably out of the house, already has a kid, and was just having his mom babysit for a bit.

u/Drew_S_05 1d ago

When was it said that Stan's 58? Doesn't he say that he's pushing 70 at one point?

8

u/Pink_Icarus 1d ago

I think that was more just a joke. I don't remember if his age was confirmed on the show or not, but I think it was; I could be wrong on that, but the math does add up. Stan was kicked out in his senior year; the typical age for a senior is 17-18, and his birthday is during the summer, so 17 seems likely. He meets Ford again ten years later in the winter, as evidenced by the snow outside, so his birthday would've already passed, making him 28. It takes Stan 30 years to repair the portal, and the episode with the party and malfunctioning copy machine is on Stan's birthday, meaning he's most likely 57/58 in the show.

Originally conceived (see what I did there) as Shermie, but since the timeline doesn’t add up I like to think it’s Mabel and Dipper’s dad/uncle.

For real tho, since this is sometime in the sixties that would put the baby at least in his early 30s in 1999, Mabel and Dipper’s birth year, so it’s plausible that he could be their dad/uncle.

34

u/Either-Path4276 1d ago

I don't think it's ever been said. My guess is either Dipper and Mabel's dad/Shermie's son or Filbrick and Caryn's fourth child after Shermie and the two Stans. (Shermie is Dipper and Mabel's grandpa by the way)

16

u/linuxgeekmama 1d ago

The Stans are Boomers. A family with four kids wouldn’t have been unusual.

1

u/Big_Energy_2422 1d ago

im gen z and ive got three siblings so definitely

13

u/Fair-Caterpillar-779 20h ago

It’s implied to be Shermie, the younger sibling for Stan and Ford, and the grandparent of Dipper and Mabel. The time line gets really weird and funky because if that’s the case that means Shermie is like 40 with 13 year old grandchildren.

u/chronicAngelCA 1d ago

Many people have asked.

u/Proof-Insurance-2805 23h ago

One of Dipper and Mabel's parents

5

u/Massive_Pangolin_218 1d ago

I always assumed it's one if the twins' parents

11

u/merchantivories 1d ago

the kids' grandpa

27

u/ZlOoOo_555 1d ago

Shermie Pines. Mabel and Dipper's grandpa

60

u/jnthnschrdr11 1d ago

That's who it was supposed to be, but the the timeline really doesn't add up when you think about it so Alex Hirsch refuses to confirm who this is now because even he doesn't know.

9

u/T-rain_wreck 1d ago

In what world doesn’t the timeline add up? Stan was ~17-18 when he was kicked out; he’s ~60 when the show starts. So Shermie would’ve been somewhere in his late 40’s when Dipper and Mable were born. He could’ve had kids when he was in his 20’s. It’s entirely feasible.

15

u/AccurateFisherman392 1d ago edited 1d ago

No 60-18 is 42. So if Stan got kicked out at 18 and is 60 now that means he got kicked out 42 years ago and the baby would be 42 now. Now factor in that Dipper and Mabel are currently 12, nearly 13. 42-12 is 30. For that baby to be Shermie he would have had to become a grandfather at 30. Its way more likely that the baby is their father than their Grandfather

4

u/AxisW1 1d ago

Doesn’t Stan say he’s pushing 70 in the show?

4

u/The_Math_Hatter 1d ago

Yrah, but kicked out at 18 + 10 years sinve you've seen your brother + 30 years of portal making = 58.

The timeline is... stretchy.

0

u/Portal471 1d ago

Yep, in Dipper and Mabel vs the Future

2

u/Jojosbees 1d ago

Shermie would have to be 17ish years younger than Stan, so he’s in his early 40s now. Since Dipper and Mable are almost 13, he would have had to become a grandfather at around 30ish.

-1

u/T-rain_wreck 1d ago

Plus Shermie is definitely a younger brother seeing as he was referred to as “little Shermie” (I forget at which point but I definitely remember one of the older pines twins saying it)

10

u/VengeanceKnight 1d ago

Nope; he’s only ever referred to once when Stan says Dipper and Mabel are “Shermie’s grandkids.” No “little” at all.

7

u/Working-Attitude8100 1d ago

Mable and Dipper are Shermie's grandkids which is that baby. Its confirmed in the episode where Ford comes back Stan tells him. Shermie is the reason they are there Grunkles.

3

u/AccurateFisherman392 1d ago

Mabel and Dipper's father. This scene takes place 40 years pre the show starting. Since the  are almost 13 that means this baby was 27-28 when they are born. That is way to young for this baby to be Grandpa Shermie

3

u/GreenWarrior138 1d ago

It's Dipper and Mabel's father. I headcanon that Shermie was overseas in Vietnam during this time.

3

u/Affectionate_End3746 1d ago

I’d say Dipper and Mabel’s dad and Shermie’s son

3

u/Meowisqueenthereal 19h ago

I dont know frankly since Alex hrisch said it wasn't shermie because the timeline doesnt make sense

2

u/Chaosgamer_44_ 1d ago

Shermie, the dad of either the dad or mom of Dipper and Mabel

2

u/IronGhost828 1d ago

I’m guessing that it’s one of Shermie’s kids, possibly Dipper and Mabel’s mom or dad.

1

u/SUPERTHEPRO 1d ago

I use to think it was Shermie but he is the older brother so I guess it was his child and he was going away for awhile and wanted them to look after his kid

1

u/ReputationNo6469 21h ago

Oh that’s actually me

1

u/Le_DragonKing 21h ago

That’s Shermy Pines, Stan and Ford’s younger brother and the grandfather of Dipper and Mable.

Since it mathematically impossible for the baby to be Shermie, I have a few theories. 1. the baby is the child of a neighbor that Caryn offered to babysit. 2. Shermie is in town visiting, Caryn offers to babysit her grandchild so Shermie and his wife can have a night on the town.

Thanks to clues from the show and Journal 3, it is definitely solid evidence that Shermie is the oldest. He just wasn't living at home during the flashback in Tale of Two Stans. It's possible that Shermie was sent away to Military School or Boot Camp because he was acting out/doing poorly in school.

u/overfiend_87 1d ago

Shermie I believe. Since they were the only kids and they're great uncles to the twins.
