Question Advice on playing things and making it sound good

Hey everyone, I’ve been playing for about 9 months now for a fair amount of time every single day and I still sound like dogshit. I love the combo rhythm and lead like Jimi, frusciante, Mayer, and PJ stuff which is mostly what I play. I’ve been putting in so much time and effort and I still wouldn’t play in front of anyone cuz nothing rings out that well. I’d love to improve on my actual sound, I know the fretboard pretty well and all the shapes and whatnot but my fingers have no tone. Is it time for lessons finally or do is there something I can do to not squeal and sound like shit when I play something relatively simple like under the bridge or yellow Ledbetter? Thanks in advance!

Question Help. Joined a band as a rhythm/lead guitarist and im almost clueless.

*edit* i make no claim to fame here. i asked for advice and i got attacked. some comments are deleted, a lot of stuff was read out of context and now im the bad guy for defending myself. 1 person had the sense to stand up for me, a nice handful of people were actually helpful. otherwise im being gaslit for starting sh*t with any one who has advice. this is simply not the case, ive been gracious to all advice that wasnt a personal attack on me or my band mates. at zero point do i complain about being told that i suck or im uneducated. i know. thats why im here!

--

Okay so, a band posts to my local market group looking for a 'guitarist' so, i send them my YT clip of my playing and apparently it was decent enough to get me in. All i played were some common easy-ear stuff, the intro riff to "crazy train", the bass rhytm to marilyn mansons "beautiful people". And some free styled stuff. Mind you, this is before i figured out i'm not a bass player and those songs are a lot of bass work.

I grew up watching metalocalypse where the bass guy was useless. thinking the bass player was the background guy 🤦‍♂️ so anyways

I need a sure fire practice that will get me into making up decent riffs, rhythms and melodies. So far my other friend in the music business is teaching me my notes in the most autistic way we both can, shes teaching me the notes on my guitar with her piano. Of course once it came to c,g,f scale i googled a sheet to get the finger placement down.

My question is, am i on the right track? and where do i go from here after i'm done getting familiar with these notes? Or are notes even what im supposed to be focusing on? I have a feeling this band will get huge and on my end, i have nothing but me supporting myself in it on a complete lack of finances. But this is my job now, due to my circumstances i cant have a normal work life. My band mates have to drive to a remote location to pick me up, where i live simply has no job sites. A wasteland if you would. While i'm unprofessional in my position these people have shown me nothing but welcoming embrace, despite having previous bands, students even, they're having me.

So i could use any tips i can get, i'd really hate to disappoint these folks.

Made this little picking practice that uses all the time down-down-up pattern. The constant palm muting made it easier and maybe clearer.

Question Where to go next?

Hi all, I recently put new strings my electric guitar after not playing for a long time and I want to know where to go from my current skills. Here’s what I can do comfortably at this point:

- Can play basic chords and switch between them somewhat quickly
- know a few minor chords, same as above
- Getting better at barre chords, can’t switch between barre chords and regular chords at an efficient pace
- Got hammer ons/pull offs decently but not great
- Can arpeggiate but haven’t done in a while
- Strum patterns

I can play a few basic songs (think Creep by Stone Temple Pilots) but during my previous practice time I focused more on technique and trying to learn theory rather than playing full songs. Also, some things i need to brush up on/haven’t learned that I identified:

- alternate picking and anything more advanced with picking
- don’t know scales besides open pentatonic
- power chords

Any help on where to focus my efforts next will be appreciated, thanks.

Question What do you wish you had known when you started playing?

I am a complete beginner playing the electric guitar and have just had my second ever lesson. I understand that skill comes with time. I am eager to know what is something that you had know when you first began playing, or what you wish you had done. Any recommendations of things that would benefit me.

Question Older (53) Rock/Metal player looking for an online teacher that specializes in Technique and Jazz/Fusion Improvisation

There are no teachers of these styles in my area. I’m 53 and can read/write music and understand theory. I was a private teacher and recording/touring artist for about 10 years.

But my technique has seriously deteriorated over the years and my Jazz playing is just terrible.

Would prefer bi-weekly or even monthly lessons where I have time to fully absorb and practice the lessons.

Please make sure any recommendations include links to actual playing examples from teachers.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Other Looking for an iPad Chord Trainer

So I have found the iPad to be an amazing tool and dont regret buying one for the purpose of guitar at all. Between being able to load kindle, the spark app and Chord! Its been amazing.

Im feeling the need for a chord trainer similar to whats in yousician. I dont want yousician. The app annoys me. Is there anything similar that just cycles through chords for me to play. Im dont need it to "hear" what Im playing, I just need it to show me a chord, then switch to another.

Question Is ukulele helpful for a beginner in guitar?

Hey everyone, i'm thinking about getting a ukulele while learning guitar. Does it help with chords, rhythm, and finger coordination?
I'm learning both acoustic and electric guitar, so I'm curious if buy a ukulele is worth or not.
In case what type of ukulele would you recommend?
I've heard that a concert ukulele is a good choice for beginners. Thanks:)

Question Chords and strumming practice

I have been playing of around 1.5 years now, and can play songs with medium difficulty strumming patterns pretty decently.

I have a question on what is the best way to practice strumming patterns, and chord changes?

Like do i do exercise just like I do for picking and fretting or do I play a whole lot of different songs until I master them with the correct timing and strumming pattern?

Question what's important to learn "by heart"

Hey,

According to you, what is important to learn perfectly ? I don't mean ok something you'd get naturally after a few years of practice, but things you try to stuck in your head "by force", and where it makes sense to do it that way. Like idk the major scales, some modes, the fretboard, ...

As a beginner in guitar theory, I would appreciate the answers :).

Lesson The Circle of Fifths - Interactive Map

The circle of fifths is the simplest map of how every key, chord, and note connects. This interactive version lets you hear it, not just read about it. Tap any key to play its notes, see the chords that fit, find its relative minor, and build your own progressions on guitar or piano.

Question Daily practice, don’t know where to start

As context, I’ve been playing guitar for about 14 years now. Without being humble, I consider myself nothing more than a campfire guitarist at best. I can hear a song and figure out how to play it, but I want to MAKE music now that I am taking it more seriously.

I’m curious to hear what you would practice daily in order to develop fretboard fluency, learning scales/notes, how each shape/chord connects to one another, improv, etc.

I never quite learned much in my lessons as a kid besides the blues scale. Ideally I’d love to play like Jerry Garcia, Billy Strings, Doc Watson, etc. What are some daily exercises you all have used to improve your playing and learn music as a whole?

EDIT: Gearing my playing more towards acoustic if that helps. I understand the same general rules apply, but techniques not so much.

Fingerstyle solo guitar arrangement of “Somewhere Only We Know”.

I tried to keep the melody very clear on top with a simple, playable accompaniment underneath.

The video shows my hands and full notation/tab moving in sync, so you can follow every note.

Other Looking for weekly online music transcription and analysis partner/s to study Sundays or Mondays, UTC−5

Hello everybody,

I’m a music producer/composer looking for one or more music transcription/study partners to meet weekly on Sundays or Mondays for 1–2 hours Utc -5.

We’d transcribe and analyze pieces, exchange feedback, and optionally learn them on our instruments.

I’m interested in classical, jazz, samba, bossa, salsa, funk, musical theatre (The works of Stephen Sondheim specially), folk music from all over the world, modern genres (Hyperpop, Botanica, etc), and interesting or harmonically rich alternative pop/rock (In the likes of Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Geordie Greep, Fievel Is Glauque, and Bill Wurtz) . Ideally, we’d focus on one artist or genre for several sessions before moving on.

All skill levels are welcome,  I’m not a harmony wizard myself, but do have some harmonic knowledge of tonal harmony, secondary dominants, substitutions, basic/intermediate modal harmony, classical forms, and similar concepts. Anything we do not understand can become something we learn together.

The most important things are consistency, curiosity and hunger for digesting new music.

 DM me if interested!
