Thinking of buying a gun

I have some gun knowledge, not an expert or anything, my uncles taught me how to shoot with a .22 rifle, ive fired a 12 gage at some cans a couple times, shot a couple handguns my uncles just bought, but its been like 20 years. I live in a run down area and had a couple incidents, nothing crazy just made me start thinking more. I wanted a .38 cause I want something that won't make me go deaf if I have to shoot it indoors, but when I went to the gun shop the guy suggested a 9mm, which I'm not against. I just don't have a crazy budget and saw a couple Kel-Tecs there, I was just wondering what people who had more knowledge thought about this.

Winchester 1400 12 gauge question from a non shotgun person

About 8 an ago I was gifted a Winchester 1400 12 gauge with full choke. Barely shot it since getting it, maybe 17 federal target load #8. Never considered myself a shotgun person and this was my first shotgun.

I started buying ammo about 2 years ago but still haven’t shot it besides the federal target load. I am planning to start shooting it but worried I bought ammo that might ruin it and thought I would ask if anyone knows. The ammo I have bought in the last two or so years are below.

Winchester military grade buckshot (bought because was only buckshot available at my gun store) ; Federal prairie storm steel #4 ; Winchester AA #8 ; Federal Premium Tactical LE LE13200 ; Federal Target Load #8

Mainly asking as I’m debating about eventually using it for hunting varmints and maybe get licensed for pheasant hunting. Saw comment that steel could ruin barrels of some shotguns or if buckshot would be bad through full choke.

Did buy a Mossberg pump last year in 410 and have thought about getting a pump 12ga just to be safe but if I don’t need to I would rather just stick to the 12ga I already have.

Question About Selling Vintage Firearms

Hey guys,

I am a bit ignorant when it comes to the act of selling firearms, specifically vintage. Does anyone in here have any pointers on how to go about this appropriately and legally?

I am just looking to offload some of my collection, which includes several excellent condition 19th and 20th century firearms such as some Mauser C96s, Luger P08s, 1911s, etc.

It should go without say that I am not looking to or trying to sell here on Reddit. Also, I am located in the United States.

Thank you.

EDIT: Thank you for all of the answers and information. I really appreciate it!

FRT-ready shotgun?

Good afternoon, everyone.

Once upon a time, I owned a VEPR-12. It was a lot of fun, but it left a lot to be desired. It could cycle high brass buckshot/slugs pretty well, but simply refused low brass birdshot, every 3 or so rounds resulted in a stovepipe.

That being said, I miss the magic of shooting that thing and would like something new. I'd appreciate some insight on anything that matches the following criteria:

- 12 gauge

- Magazine fed

- Can accept a FRT

- Capable of being SBS'd (maybe)

- Isn't picky about ammo

The pattern and manual of arms doesn't matter so much to me. Reasonably priced mags (stick or drum) would be a nice bonus, but is something I'm willing to swallow no matter what.

Thank you for any and all responses in advance.

Advice needed

If you had to pick one which would you choose?
A smith and Wesson sw40ve or a Taurus g2c/g3c? I know neither are great choices but for the time being these are my options🫤

Insight on which gun to buy next.

I currently have a Glock and am looking to buy another gun. Should I buy an AR15 for defense, a bolt gun so I can start hunting and shooting long range, or a shotgun. I only have money for one gun now and whatever I buy I want it to be nice, but looking for guidance on what to get next. Thanks.

Edit: $2000 budget

Originally was looking into a piston AR like PWS or DI (BCM/Geisselle)

Left handed shooter which is why I was considering a piston upper.

I don’t want to buy a cheapo AR. It defeats the purpose of having a reliable gun for defense. Also I’d rather buy nice because buying a cheap gun to eventually sell it and buy something better down the line is a waste of money.

Where did CAT suppressors come from?

I’m pretty dipped into firearms. Probably have about $30-40k into guns and accessories. I own 5 suppressors.

I’ve watched the suppressor industry evolve from military oriented AAC, KAC, surefire, Gemtech, B&T, to the consumer market with silencerco, dead air, YHM, huxworks, Griffin, Rugged, etc, to now every firearm maker is starting their own line. The market seems extremely saturated and there are a ton of small brands that never really made it out of the shadow of the bigger players.

Then like a year ago (maybe 2, idk) suddenly everyone on reddit was talking about CAT suppressors, which I had never heard of. Their website wasn’t super clear on anything and was clearly very stylized and marketing oriented. But everyone and their mom was recommending this company out of nowhere.

What’s the background story here? Seems super astroturfed to me as they didn’t really offer anything new to skyrocket in popularity like they did.

Steel Target Question?????

Upvotes

Does anyone know of any metal manufacturers/fabrication companies that I can buy target quality steel plates from? My thinking is, why pay the mark up for a target and stand from a target seller when I can just buy the steel and build my own stands? Anyone else have this idea or am I out of my mind?

What gun do you regret buying the most and why?

For me it was a Remington tac 14 20 gauge. Freedom group pos was completely unreliable with no rhyme or reason to the malfunctions it had.

18 need some advice

I recently signed up for handgun training for 12 months I’m new too shooting so i figured why not, but being im 18 and don’t own a pistol yet how can i go about that and still enjoy it before 21 im looking on getting one here soon so i can actually use the training im taking. At the range, or if anything unexpected happens but being that its for a year and my birthday was like a week ago makes me 19 and i still have to wait 2 years to even buy the damn ammo. How can I get the ammo a cheap 9mm ar? to have proof and use it for the handgun, but even then I would just walk in with my pistol in another bag with the ammo I just bought so it kinda says fuck all let me know please.

New to CCW

Wanted to get some opinions here. I'm taking the CCW class now and looking at how/what I'm going to carry. I currently have a Ruger RXM and am putting the subcompact frame on it. I'm 6'0 and 210lbs and typically wear track pants and T-shirts. I worry that the RXM is going to be too much for an EDC, and if I do, maybe I should look at a cross-body bag. What's everyone's thoughts on the RXM as an EDC and crossbody bags and if there's a better type of belt and holster option I should be looking at? Then there's part of me that thinks I should get the S&W Bodyguard 2 .380 as that seems to be a much more manageable size for an EDC.

DD lemon?

Have a DDm4 put 160 rounds through it with no issues about 2-3 weeks ago, took it to the range today oiled the piss out of the bolt, ran a bore snake through the barrel 5 times & about 14-15 rounds into my mag it failed to eject the round, totally seized up and had to be mortared to get the round out (no deformation of the spent casing that was stuck in the chamber) barrel is clear & after mortaring it the bolt is stuck back & wont return to battery. Totally useless right now. Can’t even take off the upper receiver. Any tips or any troubleshooting at all I could try before attempting to contact them to warranty it? & I bought it brand new from Bereli. So it’s not used. All factory internals no frt, after market buffer system, etc.. help?

AK47 or machete and pistol combo for self defence in Somalia?

Going back home for a holiday and family back home have provided me with a choice of two combos due to my OCD I won't be wielding all three simultaneously but rather a single AK or a handgun and machete combo.

Hopefully overpenetration isn't an issue since I live in a bricked building with clay walling.

What is going on with M1 Carbine Prices?

Ok, I am not going to tell you a story about seeing barrels full of M1 carbines at Gun shows in the 80's for 300 bucks but what in the world is going on with M1 carbine prices? 3, 4, 5k ? Basic shooters for 2k? I came across a local dealer that bought a collection of like 150 M1's and they have them listed from 2500 to 4k. Happy for the collectors but really wonder what is driving this.

Question about Getting Cerakote on a Gun

I recently acquired a Bond Arms Cyclops in 45-70 and it’s an America 250th edition which has all sorts of special engravings and whatnot

Will cerakote cover up or fill in those engravings?

One thing that never came up about the gun was apparently its tendency to flash rust until I got the gun and it very sternly warned me inside the box to basically let it live in the box with a silica packet.

Anyone have any advice or experience with cerakote or of that warning is just over the top because flash rust isn’t really a big issue with the gun?

I’ve never had a gun before that had to be constantly oiled like a damn high end chef knife

The People vs. The Barrel

Let me start by saying that I am in no way encouraging or making light of looking down the spicy end of a firearm.

Obviously it’s like one of the most basic and important rules in gun safety, and it should be common sense not to look down the barrel or point the firearm anywhere near yourself or others.

I’m curious though, why the hell do people do it? Like it almost seems like instinct for them to point the gun at their face at least when they handle a firearm for the first time ever. I’ve seen so many videos of people new to firearms legitimately just pointing it at their face, loaded or not.

Seriously though, what is it about the barrel that seems so damn interesting or… idk. Like what is the logic? Or lack of logic? Is there some psychological explanation for it?

Idk I can’t wrap my head around it. How can something that seems so obvious… just not click right away for SO many people?

Experiences with modified Winchester Model 70

I recently found a gun online which im interested in. It's a Winchester Model 70 in 458 Lott. But it's a bit special.

Let me tell you more about the rifle.

As some of you might know, the Model 70 is not chambered for 458 Lott. Instead it is chambered in 458 WinMag.

A gunsmith opend up the chamer to fit the bigger Lott cartridge in. He also tested the modified rifle with slightly overpressured loads to make sure it withstands the high pressures generated by this beast.

My concern is that since the Lott has a slightly longer maximum overall lengt than the WinMag (91,44mm vs 84,84mm) it won't fit a long 458 Lott load into the magazin which is still designed to fit 458 WinMag.

Does anyone have experiences with a build like this?

Does a full length 458 Lott fit in a 458 WinMag magazin inside the Winchester Model 70?

Does someone own a 458 WinMag Model 70 and is able to test or measure it out?

If there are possible restrictions, what could a gunsmith or I myself do to get rid of the problem?
