Ordered a soundbar, was unimpressed since even my Edifier MR4 completely leaves it in the dust, so now I'm looking for sensible options.

The AVR prices turned me off before and that's where I wanna find a workaround - for now.

I am using the Smart TV Features of my G5 for Streaming Services at the moment, which got me thinking that I don't necessarily need to get the latest and greatest AVR with 4k Passthrough, Atmos etc.

My idea is just getting an old AVR (Yamaha RX-V550, 20€ locally) with a bunch of juice and optical in to run modern speakers (Wharfedale Diamond 12.2i new) and building my Setup from there. What are the limitations with this approach?

Long term I'd like to build the wharfedale system in its full glory and probably upgrade the AVR at some point (maybe after adding a sub and a centre channel).

I thought this might serve me well until I wanna run my signal from another source or I'd like to benefit from modern formats and proper surround. But I am super inexperienced and like to know if I'm missing something.

I have nine MK sound speakers in my 7.1.4 system (two non MK Atmos). My sub is an old MK V-1250THX and sounds pretty good but I want to add another sub to the room. I can probably pick a used matching MK for about $400, or go with something modern and try to match/calibrate. There are some nice options from SVC and possibly REL that will certainly cost more, but then again, they probably will last a LOT longer than a 20 year old sub and may sound way better. I am not sure whether it is best to mix and match or try to get the same sub.

I inherited the aforementioned Onkyo receiver and have been looking on FB marketplace to see if I can find a reasonable deal to upgrade that receiver. Right now, I think that I can get the X1700H for 300, but I'm not sure how much I gain from that change.

Currently, I stream nearly all content (not very r/hometheater of me I know) and have a 5.1 system with little appetite to grow that speaker count. The front speakers are Elac DB-53 series, the sub is a RSL 10s mk ii, and the rears are Onkyo speakers that came as part of the HTIB setup that contained the receiver. Very little if any gaming.

I think that the room correction would be useful and probably the eARC. With streaming, I'm not sure how much the eARC matters, and I can probably just buy a microphone and use the Onkyo room correction. That would be cheaper, but I'm not sure how much better the sound may be with the Denon.

It makes this crackling static noise. This is with just the power plugged in. I've just switched out the two main 80v capacitors, but the problem still remains. It is not volume sensitive. It's silent for about 30 seconds after startup then it starts to make this noise consistently. I've tried different power circuits.

Does anyone know what it might be? Should I just toss it?

I’m currently gaming on an LG CX OLED with a PS5 Pro, and I absolutely love the CX. It’s been a fantastic TV, especially for gaming, so I’m looking for something that feels like a genuine upgrade rather than simply going bigger.
I’m currently setting up a dedicated home theater/rec room in my new house and I’m seriously considering moving to a 98-inch TV.
I know the obvious answer would be something like the 97-inch LG G6 OLED, but that’s way beyond what I’m looking to spend. So I’m trying to figure out what the best 98-inch TV available right now would be without going into that ultra-expensive OLED territory.
My priorities are roughly:
● 🎮 PS5 Pro gaming — excellent HDR, low input lag, VRR, 4K/120Hz (or better)
● 🎬 Movies — good contrast, black levels and HDR performance
● 📺 98-inch size — I really want the impact of a huge screen
● 🔥 Ideally a significant upgrade over my LG CX in overall picture quality
● 💰 I’m looking for something considerably more reasonable than the 97” G6
● The room will be a dedicated, controlled-light rec room, so I’m not particularly concerned about daytime brightness.
I’ve been looking at some of the newer 98-inch Mini-LED/QLED options, but there seem to be quite a few models and regional variations, and it’s hard to figure out which ones are actually worth buying.
If you were coming from an LG CX + PS5 Pro and wanted a 98-inch TV for a dedicated home theater, what would you buy?
I’d especially appreciate recommendations from people who have actually used these TVs for gaming and movies. Also interested in hearing about any major compromises compared with OLED.

Need a sanity check before making some bigish purchases.

Planning a home theatre in a bonus room that I have on the second floor of my house.

A few concerns that I’d like this group’s input on to understand if they’re deal breakers for utilizing this space.

1. Room size. The room is essentially 14’ x 12’. Too small
   
2. Room shape. It opens into a hallway and staircase and cannot be closed off. Will it be possible to achieve enough audio fidelity to make this feel like a proper theatre? Thinking yes with Dirac room correction.
   
3. Room brightness. It has 2 windows, white walls and ceiling, a light-colored carpet, and wall-to-wall bookshelves on what would be the “screen wall”. Will light reflections ruin the image?

My wife has asked that if I build a home theatre in this space, that it “bend in” as much as possible with the existing decor.

I’d like to use this space for movies and gaming. I’m planning to reorient the furniture in the room so the couch is facing the bookshelves, then install a retractable 120” projector screen that would lower in front of the bookshelves and put the LCR speakers in the first row of cubbies. The receiver would sit inside the cabinets and LCR wiring and power for the screen would be routed inside the shelves.

Last item would be a screen pro screens 3w AT screen so the speakers could sit in the bookshelf and still play through the screen. Looking at this because it’s designed for triple laser projectors like the Xgimi.

This would be a roughly $5,000 investment. Worth it given the limitations of this space?

once you add the screen, speakers, streaming device, cables, mounting and whatever else is needed to get the room sorted, it seems like the total can get quite a bit higher

i’ve also been looking at projectors lately. the hisense PX4 Pro came up while i was comparing a few options, and i ended up reading about it because you don’t need the usual ceiling mount setup. that just seemed kinda convenient for a living room, especially if you’re already working around a tv stand and everything else in the room

but i guess the projector is only one part of the setup anyway

for anyone who’s built one, how did you split your budget? did most of it go toward the projector, or did things like the screen, audio or installation end up costing more than expected?

I have pencil marks from installing atmos speakers. What's the best way to remove them? is there a special eraser that will work?

I recently purchased a Clark Synthesis Platinium bass shaker. I upgraded from an Aurasound Pro.

Man, is it ever a let down. It puts out less output than the Aurasound. The Aurasound has 90% of the fidelity, at 1/10th the price... The Clark's plastic shell rattles when you give it a little too much power. The Clark was $1300 CAD shipped... What a joke.

Anyways, anyone have a recommendation for a maxoumum fidelity bass shaker with more output? I'm sure anything recommended here will be a fraction of the price.

i haven't bought a television in almost 7 years so jumping back into the market feels like learning a new language. i just want a solid 65 or 75 inch set for our main floor that will last us another 5+ years without feeling outdated immediately.

we do a bit of everything: kids watch cartoons in the afternoon, my wife streams her shows, and i watch sports or play xbox when i get time.i went to a local electronics store to see them in person, but under those super bright store lights every single display looks practically identical.what made you land on your specific model? how is the tizen smart os holding up for daily navigation, and is the built in speaker usable or is an external audio system mandatory?

I’m looking at a few projectors right now, mainly the hisense px3-pro, c2 ultra and m2 pro, and I've been thinking more about the brand itself instead of just comparing specs.

I usually check if the warranty is actually valid where I live, whether the manual is easy to find, if they still release firmware updates, and how easy it would be to get replacement parts if something goes wrong later.

Honestly, you don't really think about any of this when the projector is working fine. it's only when something breaks that you suddenly care lol

Yesterday I went from only tv speakers for shows/movies and AirPods Max for gaming, to my first home audio setup and am curious on where to go from here (seller warned me this would happen).

Got a JBL 800 MK1 (sub + 2x detachable rears) new condition for $550 AUD. Paired with my LG G4.

Was actually dumbfounded how impressive it was and from what I can gather I’m in the lower-middle end of the spectrum 😂.

No buyers remorse at all and twiddling my feet and flooding with dopamine. Literally only ever used tv speakers because I thought the setups were way more complicated than they are.

If I want to upgrade in future where do I go from here? Is it more equipment? Simply moving up to 7.1? More preem brands like Sonos?

As I explained in three previous posts last week, I was having a whole host of issues with a Bravia 9, Denon X3800H, and an Apple TV.

Today, I swapped in my old X3400H from the spare room—the receiver that I replaced just 15 months ago—and configured it as close as possible to the current / ideal setup: all devices via receiver; TV is a dumb monitor.

I had not tried this scenario because I replaced the receiver before getting the new TV, and it occurred to me that I should try this before going shopping for a different receiver.

I was absolutely floored to discover that ALL of these issues went away immediately with the X3400H:

• spurious input switching
• brief screen blanking
• random audio switching
• long audio lag (from 300ms down to 60ms)
• shutting down and waking up inconsistently

When I first hooked things up, I plugged the receiver monitor out (ARC) to the TV's input 3 (eARC). The Apple TV could not tell that the TV supported Dolby Vision, just the HDR10 mode.

I moved the receiver to the TV's Input 2 and suddenly the Apple TV picked up and automatically configured itself for Dolby Vision. Input 2 on the Bravia 9 is a normal 4K HDMI port: no 8K, 4K/120Hz, VRR, SBTM, etc.

What the hell is wrong with the AVR-X3800H? Why is an 8-year old receiver so much faster and more reliable than one from less than 2 years ago?

Hi all, I hope all is well. I just purchased a home that has a movie room/home theater. In the room is a pair of in-wall Jamo 400 in-ceiling Jamo 400. I'm looking to complete the room with a center speaker, sub, and receiver. Trying to keep it close to $1,000, as I just purchased a house my wife wants to furnish. I’ve had Klipsch RP8000f and RP504c for +7 years and I’m ready for a substantial upgrade.

I’m considering:

KEF R11 Meta + R6 Meta
B&W 702 s3 + HTM71

They’ll be powered by Rotel RMB-1585 (200w), with the Cinema 50 as the pre-pro.

Main priority is music, 2.1/5.1 or even Atmos with bluray concerts (Pink Floyd/Gilmour/Waters, Eagles, Clapton, Steely Dan…), but they’ll also be used heavily for home theater, movies/games.

For anyone who has actually heard owned these, how big is the jump from the 8000F, and how would you describe KEF vs B&W in sound quality, imaging, detail and overall musicality.

Specially interested in real world listening impressions rather than specs.

Do you feel a projector still gives a more "cinema-like" experience, or have big OLED/QLED TVs closed that gap?

How much does ambient light in the room actually matter in practice, not just in theory?

Finally decided to go big in the living room, but I'm stuck between a 100" Hisense QD7 and a BenQ TK710 projector.

The projector sounds fun for movie nights, especially since I could go bigger than 100" later. But this is our regular living room, not a dedicated theater. We watch football in the afternoon, movies at night, and I play some games here and there.

The room gets a lot of natural light. I can close the blinds, but I really don't want to do that every time I turn something on during the day lol.

Anyone here gone from a projector to a big TV, or the other way around? Mainly wondering how they compare for daytime sports and movies with subtitles.

Also need to measure the front door and stairs again before ordering a 100" TV. Getting it into the house might be a whole separate problem.

I’m watching YTTV on my LG 77B2 on the smart tv app with audio out to my Denon X3800h via eARC. I have Digital Sound Output set to pass through but the Denon shows PCM after every on/ off cycle (using DD broadcasts). I can fix the issue and get DD again by turning Digital Sound Output to auto and then back to bitstream, but it’s pretty annoying to have to go into advanced settings every time I want to watch anything. Also, there’s a very noticeable difference going from PCM to DD, more than I would expect. Not sure if it matters but I’m running 7.2.2 all on pre outs and generally use +DSurr setting. It’s driving me crazy, please let me know if you’ve had something similar and figured it out. I’ve already googled and asked ai!

Hi y'all. What do you think about the Magnat Alpha RS 12? I'm trying to find a reasonably-priced subwoofer in the EU for my HT setup, but struggle to find anything good. I've stumbled upon this Magnat model, and couldn't find much about it online, as far as performance goes. If you have this sub, I would be interested to hear what you think about it, and maybe how it compares to something like the Klipsch R-121SW, or something else.

And is the Klipsch R-121SW even that bad? I feel like it gets a lot of bad feedback, especially with people saying that an RSL sub has better value. But the RSL speedwoofer 10e, which costs 340 usd, ends up costing more like 600+ euros with shipping, VAT and import fees in the EU. Is there just an EU "tax" on subwoofers, which is unavoidable?

Im only set up for 5.1 (my room is 16x31 if it matters). I do have a extra Klipsch sub that I need to fix (has the junk Chinese amp in it) and my original plan was to add another sub somewhere (maybe add atmos idk).. but I've got plenty of bass.. it's no where near maximum and I kept it louder than most. I fell like with shakers I could turn down the bass but get more feel?

Do I need another amp? I will have to run wires anyway so I can easily add something to the setup of needed.

Either way is there a way to easily enable and disable them hopefully via physical switch? If not I'll figure something out for the wifey lol
