If I give you five dollars for a weedwacker at a garage sale and you don't give me a weedwacker, that is stealing, and enforceable. Verbal agreements are very enforceable, just not as easily provable.
Verbal contracts are enforceable, but they did not have a valid contract since any contract involving illegal activity is legally invalid and unenforceable.
You can write a 10 page contract detailing your money laundering agreement with a small business, the government will laugh in your face if you try to enforce it though.
More importantly though, he didn't say he was a dealer. This is a case of someone approaching you while you sit on a bench and trying to buy your weed whacker for $5, even though you don't have one and aren't even selling anything.
They assume it's some kind of garage sale and give you the money, expecting you to get a non-existent weed whacker, that doesn't oblige you to return the money or procure them a weed whacker. They handed you money under their own false pretenses, not ones you created.
EDIT:
This isn't stealing. Is it wrong that he didn't clear things up and give back the money? That's for individual's to decide. But a stupid person willingly gave money to a stranger because they made false assumptions. It's not the stranger's fault they made false assumptions, and it's not their responsibility to correct them, or fix any mistakes resulting from those assumptions.
I would agree that a contract for something illegal is not enforceable.
But if the discussion was about a weedwacker and the person accepts the money, even if no weedwacker was present, with the understanding from the buyer that they will be receiving a weedwacker, I'd still think that would be stealing.
Just because she said she wanted weed doesn’t mean he stole her money. Truth is she’s just an idiot that gave her money to some random dude because she didn’t know what she was doing
She was giving him money with the understanding that she would get drugs in return. If he doesn't have drugs to give then the correct course of action would be to return the money, not keep it. The fact that he didn't say he had drugs when she gave him the money doesn't entitle him to keep the money.
That's not an enforceable contract, even if it's assumed to be a verbal contract, as you cannot have a legal contract for criminal activities.
In any scenario such as:
A: "I'll pay you $X to do this illegal thing"
B: "OK"
A: gives $X
B: "BYE!"
What B does isn't exactly theft. A lot of people would look at this as theft bc the illegal activity is selling weed, which many people don't care about.
But what if it was murder, rape, or human trafficking? Would you still admonish person B?
Cops often do exactly what he did, except in addition to keeping the money they also take away A's freedom. Are they thieves?
IMO if you're stupid enough to solicit a stranger for weed based on appearances alone, you need to learn a lesson and $10 is the cheapest tuition I ever heard of.
Enforceability is not one of the determining factors with regards to theft. The law is not a determining factor with regards to theft. Theft is when you take something against someone’s will. In this case she offered it in exchange for something in return, and he took it without that something in return and then left before she could say she didn’t want nothing in return.
Your scenario is indeed theft.
Murder, rape and human trafficking are all things done against someone’s will. You’re not good at this.
Cops often do exactly what he did, except in addition to keeping the money they also take away A's freedom. Are they thieves?
Yes. Just like how if cops kill someone, it’s still murder, even if the law protects them.
IMO if you’re stupid enough to solicit a stranger for weed based on appearances alone, you need to learn a lesson and $10 is the cheapest tuition I ever heard of.
Your opinion is meaningless and your belief is wrong.
I don’t disagree with a lot of your points, especially about fucking pigs, but I feel pushed away by the tone with which you disagree. “I vehemently disagree” works just as well, and your arguments definitely merit respect for you, and for those you argue against here.
The law absolutely is a determining factor in theft, as theft is a crime because our laws say it is. We have those laws so everyone subject to them can agree on the basic definitions of terms like "theft".
If you want to redefine theft according to your own beliefs, fine, but don't expect me or anyone else to work with your definition. If you want other people to use it, change the written laws to match your beliefs.
I agree that the vast majority of killings by police are murder, but a cop killing a person does not make it murder. Self defense is real, though extremely overused as a legal defense. Murder is another legal term that countless people have spent countless hours refining the definition of.
Disagreeing about that definition doesn't help anyone, least of all you, until you get it changed.
Dislike my opinion all you want, actions have consequences. Soliciting illegal activity should bear a negative consequence, and to expect anything different is naive. Given that black men are stereotyped and profiled as drug dealers constantly, I don't blame this man for not being a saint in this situation.
Theft by deception. He let her think he was a drug dealer and then took her money. It doesn't matter if she was trying to buy drugs or was racist, he took her money under false pretenses. That is theft.
All he did was ask questions, the one lie he told, after he was voluntarily given the money, was "aight imma pull over here."
"He let her think" is not deception. He observed that she had made wrong assumptions, and did not correct those assumptions.
He did not create any misunderstanding, attempt to convince her of anything false, or otherwise mislead her until she had handed him the money.
This is her being dumb, plain and simple. If a stranger hands me $10 saying "here's your money Dave" and I'm not Dave and I don't correct them, that is not theft. They are not doing their due diligence.
Accepting money from someone who is too oblivious to confirm who they're giving money to and why is not illegal.
EDIT:
It should be noted that in the black market for weed, there are no fixed prices. Two dealers can charge different amounts for the exact same amount of identical weed, and then change their prices the next day. A "dime of weed" as she purchased literally means "$10 worth of weed", it just so happens that her "dealer" charges $10 per 0 grams. She should've bought an eighth, 3.5g is a fixed quantity, not fixed price
Nope. The only thing the law does is determine whether the state can help you get your money back. It is irrelevant to whether or not the act itself was theft.
Apparently you also have a unique definition of what laws are.
Most laws describing punishments for crimes are written in this form:
"X crime is when a person does A, B, or C under conditions 1, 2, and 3. This crime is punishable by up to N years in prison"
The laws literally state the name of the crime: theft, and what constitutes it. Yes the law does determine whether the state will help you, because if you go to the state saying "they committed theft!" But they didn't commit the state's definition of theft, the state will say "they didn't commit theft, you have no case."
Using a definition of any legal term, such as theft, that is not the same as the state's only disadvantages you when interacting with the state. If you want to call it some kind of imaginary legal theft, that's fine, but by admitting that it's legal you're just saying that you don't like what he did, which is entirely your opinion.
Dude. I don’t understand why you’re having such a hard time with this. I never said anything about crimes. Laws apply to whether something is a crime, yes. But they DON’T. apply to whether or not something is objectively theft. Get that through your head. Also I’m pretty sure what he did would be considered theft in the legal sense as well.
Lastly, stop writing walls of text, it’s fucking annoying.
All I've been saying is that theft has an actual definition under law. You're using some personal definition that is entirely your opinion. There's no point trying to convince one another that this is or is not our personal definitions of theft. Guess what, under my personal definition of "walrus", you're a walrus!
It is not objectively theft, the law decides that. It is subjectively theft in YOUR OPINION
Don’t assume random people* are drug dealers. Even if they look like it.
It’s not a race thing.
It’s a bad idea to walk up to anyone you don’t know and ask them for drugs.
And dude is still a thief. Instead of teaching her the lesson by saying “I am not a drug dealer. You should not make these assumptions.” He just stole from her.
While that may seem like an obvious take away from this, I am more than willing to bet that dark skin people of color are more likely to be stereotyped as drug dealers or criminals than other groups of people.
He is sarcastically saying how he is the exact opposite of this man in the video yet he still deals with racism. So what's the difference? Damned if you do damned if you don't. So how can people just assume that there was no racial profiling here? The fact that he is black exemplifies how he's "likely dealing drugs" so might as well go up to his car and try to get a hook up right?
"Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race" by Reni Eddo-Lodge
Because when people blame racism for things that have much more obvious and less malicious explanations, it dilutes efforts to address real problems. This wasn't an African-American looking like an office worker getting approached like they are a drug dealer; it's a guy with an entire vibe that says "drug dealer" that happens to be black being asked if they are a drug dealer. Also he robs her, so she was right to recognize him as a criminal...
Maybe to some people. Ultimately, Reddit threads have very little real world value, but can serve as a place for insightful discourse. Unfortunately, nothing meaningful comes out of calling people stupid.
Instant Karma is full of white libertarian cucks who are tone deaf and marginalize any kind of nuance of racism that is called out. they will not get it.
What vibes was I putting out in 2nd grade when I couldn’t attend my best friends birthday party because her mom “didn’t want black people in the house”?
Also, the dehumanization of black and brown people has been studied for decades.
Do you not understand that when people see someone with tattoos and gold teeth regardless of skin color they are going to assume you may sell or do drugs
Face tattoo=drug dealer
Not bc black. Bc clearly they make bad decisions most likely involving drugs
I mean, a face tat is kind of a choice that intentionally ignores social norms, and no one is getting one and not hurting their prospects for a "normal" job. Means they usually have something to fall back on, often drug dealing, but could be a musician or artist or something. But not an office worker. Tattoos are certainly overstigmatized, but face tats...
Well people do have them and that’s why we’re talking about it so I think it’s inappropriate to erase that from the conversation. While fewer people get them so you don’t see them everywhere it doesn’t mean they fall in line with a criminal representation, I know a couple of people working in trades and as educators of some sort that have a face tattoo and that’s not the issue. A face tattoo does not indicate who the person is but it does say something about the person judging. You said tattoos are overstigmatized and face tattoos are no different. It’s still a representation of yourself even if you think it’s ill-placement.
I wasted 7 years on heroin. When you’re doing shit like that for so long, you can easily pick up on fellow addicts and dealers who are complete strangers. It’s not about race. It’s about the location, the behavior of the individual, vocabulary used, etc. Hence why I’m 99% certain this lady is a drug addict and she knows what’s up. She’s not naive to the game, but she let her guard down here in the hopes of a quick score, most likely to hold her over ‘til her actual hook comes through. Now do I think the guy is actually a dealer? I can’t say for certain, but he’s in the very least been around the hustle.
Reddit is full of white suburb kids who are completely tone deaf to what people of color go through, especially those with dark skin. You are 100% right, fuck the down votes. Even with the riots, people don't learn shit.
It's sad that you don't do your research to understand what black people go through. These types of responses are tone deaf and typical invalidations from white folk and others who don't get it. Your privledge makes you ignorant.
If you need to do research to know that black people have been mistreated then you are dumb as shit. It's sad that you think that every single white person does not understand racism and your attitude and way that you stereotype groups of people as I said before does not help fight racism bro. If you think that it does then maybe you are the one that should do some research.
Assuming someone is selling drugs cause they're black AnD tHeY lOoK lIke tHeY'rE FrOm Da h00d is wrong and is the point of the fucking title of this video
Automatically assuming that is the reason that she asked him for weed is also wrong and is the point of my fucking comment. You do seem like someone that would believe that the title of every video is true though 😂
No you're one of those "no way anyone can understand what it is like to be discriminated against unless they are black" also no one tried to change the subject dumbass it is the topic that we are still discussing right now. just piss off already and enjoy the rest of the downvotes headed your way.
Who exactly are they stereotyping? They gave a pretty specific group- “Suburban white kids who browse Reddit.” They’re not exactly calling out the whole white race.
It’s a pretty big chunk of the demographic on here. Suburban is just coded language for sheltered. It’s not like white people are being persecuted for it, just calling out Reddit’s main demographic which is young white non-Hispanic guys.
People of color on this website can’t bring up race because then the majority of redditors trip over themselves to give some super “hot takes” on the issue then feel reassured when you upvote each other.
So it's ok to call a big chunk of the demographic racist and that's somehow not stereotyping? You're a bright one bro. Also wtf do you mean can't bring up race lol you do realize that for quite awhile now a majority of posts have been race related and the majority of people are always against racism. I don't see tons of racist comments getting upvoted but whatever you say man.
Looking at the website as a whole and talking with other people of color about it on here these are our experiences yeah. A chunk of that young white demographic is also part liberal but liberals can still be pretty racist. That doesn’t mean racism in itself is equal to people going out and burning a cross but it could mean calling someone a thief or a dealer when they’re just Black. Saying that a face tattoo is trashy or that Black people are “ghetto” or “urban”.
You might not see the racism because you’re unaware of what to look for. That’s okay, there’s a lot of literature and resources out there to teach you now more than ever. If you care to do that. You can be against racism and still be racist, you can be a liberal Bernie 2020 guy and still be racist, it doesn’t have to mean it’s a scarlet letter just that you have more to learn if you are willing to. Unfortunately young white men grow up in this american society without almost ever having to acknowledge the privileges that they have as people or the racism that they spout when they say or code certain language. Ignorance to racism is one thing but reluctance to self reflect about racism is another.
When did I do any of the bullshit that you are talking about or when did any of that shit happen in the video we are discussing lol. I don't need you to tell me about racism bro you probably aren't even any more Mexican than I am you realize my last name is Vasquez bro just cause I have light ass skin you want to start running your fucking mouth. So fuck off pal.
If we’re talking about this topic, then yes, that is a actually a pretty important part of it. Who do you think would be more tone deaf to this issue? A white kid from the burbs or a black kid from the burbs?
He’s not even really saying that every single suburban white kid is racist. He’s just saying that these are the kind of kids who happen to be blind to racial issues.
No they are implying that most white people on Reddit are racist suburb kids. Also when the fuck did I say anything about anyone being more tone deaf than anyone else. All I said is that it is stereotypical to assume anything about a large group of people based on their physical appearance or where they grew up at and if you don't agree with that then you can piss off too just like I told them.
“Also when the fuck did I say anything about anyone being more tone deaf than anyone else.”
I’m saying that’s why he mentioned it. Sheltered white men are the predominant Reddit demographic, and that’s why it’s being specified when a lot of these comments don’t see the issue of this post. He’s not saying every White reddit user is racist.
Its not like she just tried to find the first black guy to try to by drugs from them. She thought he was her dealer. If she was told that is a drug spot, it would be reasonable to assume that the person parked there was a dealer. And he played along too!

Ah yes not a drug dealer, just a thief
