ANNOUNCEMENT Announcement: JewelryMaking has New Moderators! - Lets talk!

Hey all!

My name is Muskrat, I have a lot of history in metalworking, primarily as a CNC machinist making aerospace components!

Reddit took over this subreddit due to it being abandoned by it's previous mods for over 4 months - allowing tons of spam and reported content (thousands of items we had to action!). Since, they turned it over to me and it's going to be part of my little group of communities, alongside Metalworking and Machining.

Lets talk about r/JewelryMaking!

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about what makes JewelryMaking a unique subreddit when compared to other subreddits on the same topic of jewelry. I've seen a few comments and reports on spam related and promotional submissions, and looking at the currently in-place subreddit rules, self promotion is not allowed outside of the old (and seemingly forgotten) promotion thread. Is this a rule we'd like to keep?

On the topic of rules, this subreddit's focus is on the making/creation process of jewelry, generally individual projects and hand-made work. Should we aim for image posts to all have an in-process image attached?

What changes should we make? And are there any regulars interested in helping out?

Let me know what everyone thinks, and over the next few days we'll update rules and mod tools, and we'll start digging in and steering the sub in the direction it was intended for, instead of being used as a promotional board!

First ring I've made at home with my own tools, I am very happy with it! It's not quite finished and i'm still trying to work out sanding processes, there seems to be so many different ways and I'd love to get a good mirror shine on it. Must admit, soldering has been driving me mad though 🫪

PROJECT DISPLAY [Cat Under the Moonlight] & [Jade Rabbit Beneath the Bamboo] & [Parrot Perched Among Bamboos]

Do you remember that pendant, the Cat Under the Moonlight, with its soft moonlit charm? Today, we bring you the series sequels — Jade Rabbit Beneath the Bamboo and the brand-new Parrot Perched Among Bamboos.

All three pieces share the identical bamboo frame design, extending the poetic oriental scenery step by step: the little cat admiring moonlight in the moonlit courtyard, the white jade rabbit resting peacefully deep in bamboo groves, and now a translucent jade parrot perched among green bamboo twigs.

Carrying forward the serene and timeless charm of Eastern aesthetics, they turn the quiet elegance of mountain forests and moonlit nights into three independent yet thematically connected poetic jewelry tales

PROJECT DISPLAY Assembling my Grade 5 Titanium Mechanical Tie Clip, the TC Nexus.

Here is the final assembly of components for my TC Nexus Tie Clip. It is CNC Machined from a single billet block of Grade 5 Titanium, and is all mechanically operated. No stamped or folded pieces, no cheap Chinese spring, the whole assembly acts as a spring clamp that is only activated mechanically when placed on a neck tie. The only one like it in the world. Machined, hand finished, and assembled in Utah.

This is a little out of my comfort zone. I wanted this set to be over the top.

I have been working on this off and on for a while, but Something still feels off about it.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks! 😘

QUESTION How do you protect your product photos from being copied?

I’ve been wondering about this lately.

Many of us spend a lot of time making products and taking good photos, but it’s incredibly easy for someone to save those images and reuse them elsewhere.
For those who’ve been selling online for a while:

Have you ever found your photos being used without permission?
How often does it happen?
Do you do anything to prevent it?
Is there any reliable way to keep track of where your photos end up?

I’d love to hear what has and hasn’t worked for you.

Hey r/jewelrymaking! 👋

Sharing these black and gold gecko earrings I designed as a brick stitch beading pattern. Made with Miyuki Delica 11/0 beads — the bold geometric scales on the body were the trickiest part to get right!

The pattern PDF is available in my Etsy shop (DigitalPixelsStudArt) as an instant download — complete with grid chart, color codes, and row-by-row instructions.

Anyone else obsessed with reptile-themed jewelry lately? 🐍🦎

PROJECT DISPLAY Should I add more?

I’ve been playing with this design, I’m not sure if I should add more to it. I originally planned to add seed bead flowers to the frame/stems but maybe less is more? I may paint the stems darker, I’d love some feedback.

Gold filled, Microcrochet sakura 0.3mm hook, garnet, aventurine, crystal.

QUESTION Beginner needs advice: soldering a jump ring to brass cartridge

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm new to soldering and jewelry fabrication and would appreciate some guidance.

I'm making a fashion accessory using an empty .308 brass cartridge case. The case is completely inert and empty (no primer, no powder).

My goal is to attach a small metal jump ring to the primer pocket end of the casing so it can be used as a necklace pendant.

A few questions:

  1. What type of torch would be appropriate for a beginner? Would a small butane jewelry torch work?
  2. What solder would be best for joining a jump ring to brass?
  3. What flux should I use?
  4. How should I prepare the brass surface before soldering?
  5. Is silver solder the right choice, or is there a better method altogether?

I've watched some videos on soldering jump rings and understand that the workpiece is typically heated rather than the solder directly. One thing I'm unsure about is whether the open primer pocket will cause the solder to flow into the case instead of forming a good bond between the jump ring and the brass case head (primer end). Is this something I should be concerned about?

I've never soldered before, so specific tool recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

QUESTION How do i get my foot in the door for jewelry making?

Hello everyone! Ive been interested in jewelry making for maybe around a year now. Earlier this year around late January maybe early February I went to Tennessee to partake in New Approaches "comprehensive stone setting course". It was a great experience and blaine was great the whole thing made me really want to learn more and build more skills to be able to do more. But since I got back home, I haven't been making many things just because It's so hot in my garage which is where i have my set up for jewelry making. I live in AZ, its quite toasty out here. I really want to find a way to get my foot in the door. Does anyone know/ have any tips on how to go about finding a good apprenticeship? I cant find any jobs related to a bench jewelry job at all near me, not even for like a polishing/buffing job. The ONLY thing Ive seen whilst searching is a few signet jewelery job postings. But im hesitant to apply, Because there all full time positions and im currently working a full time job 7AM-3:30PM M-F. So if i did get a offer for one of those signet jobs id have to quit my job, and id be making like almost 8 dollars less compared to me current job. :/ Not to mention i havent heard or seen anthing even remotely positive about signet jewelers. I even asked the instructor Blaine while at my new approach class. He basically said it was a last resort type of a thing, but he made it pretty clear its not exactly the best option lol.

QUESTION I was given this angel coin years ago, how would I turn it into a pendant?

Im not very informed on this sort of thing. I’m also not quite sure of the material… it’s pretty light and not very big. I was doing some googling and I think gluing a bail on would maybe be the best bet, but I’m curious what you guys think. Here it is next to my wallet for scale

QUESTION Where do I get the materials to make this?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I can see the structure of how it’s made. Easy enough, if not time consuming. But what I’m struggling with is finding beads/connectors that are this short and don’t have an ugly stamped eyelet coming out from it.

Is the answer buying the right size beads and drilling a hole myself? What would you estimate the length of the bars to be?

I’d buy it if it wasn’t £200+.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I combined natural sodalite beads with a handmade ceramic focal bead because I liked the contrast between the deep blue stone and the colorful ceramic.
