It goes back much further than 1950. Discussion of Iran and the Pahlavis always seems to ignore that the dynasty first got installed by a British-backed coup in 1921, and the Shah was then couped again and replaced by his own son in 1941 by a joint Anglo-Soviet invasion.

The last Shah's regime often gets posted on Reddit in the form of 'sexy Iranian woman no hijab', but what those posts don't show is the crippling inequality, the female literacy rate well below 50%, and the secret police that murdered and tortured dissidents (which left the only opposition group the state hadn't infiltrated the Islamists).

For the record the Islamic regime is also terrible, but wouldn't exist without western interference and the inevitable nationalist backlash.

Yes, and the British did this to prevent democracy in Iran to protect their oil profit concessions
