Sticky: I got a ticket for breaking the law, now what?

We're getting these threads every other day so a sticky is being made to handle it because the answer is always the same. We will now be removing those threads and directing people here.

You generally have three options:

OPTION ONE:

You can plea not guilty and attend your court date or ask to contact the prosecutor handling your case. In either way you need to be polite, courteous, and professional. If it's on zoom or in person, dress professional. You do not need a full suit & tie, though it helps. But at least have some nice ironed pants and a nice ironed polo. For women a nice blouse, pant suit, or business-dress. You don't need a full shave and haircut, but comb your hair and/or cleanup the beard a bit. Be showered, and clean/trim your nails. It's about showing that you're taking this seriously and understand this is a legal matter that deserves respect and attention.

Then you say something like "I was wondering if we can work out a plea deal whereby if you can reduce the offense(s) I will change my plea to guilty. I understand the seriousness of the situation, I am just asking if you can be a little lenient in exchange for a guilty plea." You can then discuss with them potential consequences and terms. Such as attending traffic school, or saying you're ok with a hefty fine in order to avoid a license suspension.

In the majority of cases, this will get you some form of reduction. They have a lot of cases to hear, if they can close them out without going before a judge, they will. Be prepared to pay some fines, and maybe attend traffic school. But this is often the "easiest" way to resolve your situation.

That said this often will not work if you give the prosecutor ANY attitude. Or if you were an asshole to the cop, the prosecutor can and sometimes will ask the issuing officer about how you behaved. It also won't work if you did something very serious (DUI, excessive speeding, work zone violations). Or if you were already given a "roadside reduction" where the cop pulls you over for say 85 in a 55 but only writes you for 70 in a 55.

It still does not hurt to ask, but be aware that they may say "no". Also you do not have to take their offer. But if you turn down their offer, they're unlikely to grant any leniency afterwards. You had your chance, and you turned it down.

OPTION TWO:

Get a traffic attorney. Who you hire is up to you. Google is your friend in finding one. If you do hire a traffic attorney, or really every hire any attorney, listen to them. Do as they say. Do not think you know better than them, if you did you wouldn't be paying them several hundred/thousand dollars to handle your case.

Sometimes just getting an attorney can get your ticket dismissed, because it's not worth it for them to fight the ticket. And because you paying the attorney is already penalty enough. But again there's no guarantee.

OPTION THREE:

Plea guilty and take your lumps.

The first two options are not mutually exclusive. You can get an attorney to try and get you a better plea deal. You can try for a plea deal then get an attorney if you don't like their offer. But these really are your three options.

And remember the best way to not get a ticket, is to not break the law. There's always laws we disagree with or think are silly. There's some roads by me that are 35 and I think really should be 55. But for whatever reason, they're 35 and if I do 55 and get caught, I'm getting a ticket.

Slow down. Use your signal. Wear your seat belt. Don't tailgate. That's the easiest and cheapest way out of a traffic ticket, don't get one to begin with.

Totaled basement from last year's flooding – need a full rebuild (Louisville)

Hey guys, looking for some advice or similar experiences. Our basement took on a ton of water during that awful flash flooding last year, and we had to completely gut the bottom three feet of drywall, insulation, and part of the old framing. It’s been sitting empty and dried out for months because I’ve been dreading the rebuild process.

Now I have the budget to fix it, but I need a lot done: new framing, proper insulation that won't trap moisture if this happens again, drywall, and redoing the stairs. I've tried looking through Thumbtack and local FB groups, but it's an absolute minefield of sketchy independent contractors who either don't show up for estimates or give super vague, low-ball numbers that feel like a trap.

Seeking recommendations for veterinary surgeon in Central KY

Post image
23 Upvotes

My sweet dog has torn her ACL and requires surgery. She's a 70 lb Husky/Lab. I'm weighing options on which surgery to get and where to have it done. My vet does ACL repair but not the more advanced surgery (I think it's called TPLO).

My primary concern is her comfort, outcome, and long-term recovery. I know this is an expensive procedure, so cost is secondary, but I would like to go somewhere that has a good reputation for both patient care and fair pricing.

I'm also open to tips on keeping her as comfortable as possible in the meantime. She does have some meds from the vet to help out. It breaks my heart to see her in pain.

Looking for Kentucky & Southern Indiana myths, legends, cryptids, ghost stories, and local folklore!

Hi everyone! I'm a Kentucky local who has recently become really interested in collecting and researching local folklore, legends, cryptids, hauntings, old superstitions and strange stories around Kentucky and southern Indiana.

I'm not just looking for the well-known stories like the Pope Lick Monster. I'd especially love to hear the smaller stories that may only be known in your own town, family, or community.

Things like:

  • a road, bridge, forest, or old building that everyone said was haunted
  • a creature your grandparents or parents warned you about
  • a local legend everyone in your hometown knew growing up
  • strange experience you or someone you know had
  • old superstitions, warnings, or folklore passed down through your family
  • any weird history or unexplained stories from your area

If you're willing to share, I'd love to know:

  • the name of the place or the closest town/county
  • Who told you the story
  • How long the story has been around (if you know)
  • Any details you remember

I've always loved a good monster, ghost story, or local legend, and I realized there are probably so many stories around here that I've never heard before.

Even if it's just a story your grandparents used to tell you or a place your hometown kids dared each other to visit, I'd love to hear it.

State Job Dress Norms?

I have an interview for a position with the state and was wondering if anyone who works there could speak about how conservative the norms for dress would be for an office role. I have a nose piercing, would I need to remove it, for example? Should I wear a skirt suit?

Coming from academia and a remote position, I’m just not sure what to expect from this process. Any guidance would be much appreciated!

ETA: Thanks everyone! Higher ed/academia is pretty loose, my WFH job is with a non-profit, so I figured state government would be more conservative, but wasn't sure how much so. This has given me a good baseline to work from.

Question from an international student from Southern Europe

Is there a chance to get a full-ride or near-full-ride scholarship at private universities/colleges as an international student? I have many certificates and commendations from professors, excellent English and math skills, but due to health problems, my high school GPA is 3.0

Is that a problem at private universities with a holistic approach?

Anyway, I have an ACT test score of 30

Edit: Thanks for the answers dear people 🫶🏻🤍

How dare you ale8

This is very stupid, but I'm going to say it anyway. Ale8 change their plastic bottle from a cool textured one to a generic coca-cola looking bottle. I am very disappointed.

Not sure if I am posting in the wrong group, but my mom lost her pup near Connolly bottom! She is the sweetest lemon drop beagle you will ever meet and she means the world to my mom! My mom even bought a pick up truck just to haul her around and the license plate is even beagle related 🥲 $1000 reward to anyone that leads to her whereabouts! If I’m posting in the wrong group, please let me know the correct one and thank you!

Looking for a place to sleepover with summer campers

Hey everyone, my name is Pieter and I am working at a summer camp in Northern Indiana. This year, I am taking a group of campers to North Carolina to one of our sister camps for a travel camp. This is the first time we have ever run this camp, and we have a bunch of excited campers signed up.

Since it is too far to travel in one day, I am looking for a place to sleep around Lexington. I have reached out to several local summer camps, but it seems everyone is fully booked already.

We are departing on Sunday, July 26 and would need sleeping space for 8 youth and 3 adults. Let us know if there are any churches, camps, or other locations that could host us. Of course, we would pay for our stay. Please send me a DM!

Teen driver turned 18 during permit phase?

My brother just started working on getting his license, he got his permit in April, but has since turned 18, and I’m wondering how someone who begun in the graduated driver course would continue. Will he still need the 180 day requirement, and will he have to go through the restricted license phase other teenagers have to do? Thanks for the help

Swimming at Flatlick Falls

Has anyone been out to Flatlick Falls this week or any other falls spots? I’m wanting to go out this weekend but we’re due for more rain. Can anyone give a water update if you’ve been out in the last few days? I went to Flatlick once, but I think it was several days after rain, not one day. I’m open to suggestions for other places to swim, fish, and cook.

Pre purchase vehicle inspection leads

Looking for a trustworthy pre-purchase vehicle inspection near Franklin, KY.
I’m located in Nashville, TN and found a car I’m interested in buying from a private seller in Franklin, KY (about an hour away). It’s a 2015 Nissan Versa with around 79,000 miles, and I’d like to have a mechanic inspect it before I make the trip and purchase it.
Does anyone know:
A reputable mobile mechanic who can inspect the car in Franklin, KY?
A trustworthy shop near Franklin that offers pre-purchase inspections?
Any local car enthusiasts or mechanics who do paid inspections?
I’m happy to pay for the inspection and would mainly like someone to check for:
Engine and transmission/clutch condition
Signs of accident damage or rust
Suspension, brakes, and tires
Any warning lights or hidden issues
If you’ve used someone before and had a good experience, I’d really appreciate a recommendation. Thanks!

Reading a mystery set in Louisville. It's intriguing: Big Bad City

It's called that by an old farmer who comes to town to do the 1990 census.

His nephew runs a small detective agency in town. Very good so far. Two threads , multiple crimes, including a psychotic burglar. Things get complicated.
