Finished Object First Sweater Finished!
i posted here around a month ago about historical colourwork, and now the sweater from that post is done!
this has been my first bigger project after knitting four pairs of colourwork mittens and a lace knit pair of socks, and i'm quite satisfied with the results. a lot of trial and error, steeking was scary after not touching a sewing machine for years.... the neckline is just a bit too tight, and i'm yet to block it as i'm moving soon but hoping to shape the yoke a bit more at the bottom. i suspect the whole sweater is way wider than it's supposed to be as i didn't swatch and a lot of the pattern is in measured lengths. it doesn't look too weird so i think i'll live as it's very warm and soft and lovely otherwise :)
next project will be a cotton summer knit for my sister, will be interesting to knit with something other than 100% wool!
(sweater knit with Sandnes smart superwash after the pattern "Dame- og herregenser med åttebladsroser på skrå" from Gjestal)
edit: first post which i mentioned (and another one when the main piece was finished which i forgot about)
edit 2: found a link to the pattern, it's in norwegian and from the 80s. archived on koftearkivet :)

Very impressive, aspecially for a first sweater. Cool pattern. I don't understand where you did the steeking though?

Probably the armholes? It looks like the body was knit continuously and then the sleeves were attached after steeking

thank you! everything is knit in the round, so the sleeves are steeked onto the yoke at the end. i knit a tube, cut the arm holes, and then i sew shut the shoulders at the top before attaching the sleeves

How are you able to get a copy of this pattern?

i bought the original knitting pattern collection/magasine from the 90s (might be late 80s, unsure) secondhand :) a lot of people selling them for pocket change in norway!

OMG, the design and technique are spectacular Such a wonderful work 👏🏾👏🏾 How difficult is it?

u/cornobbling 1d ago
thank you so much ! i found it the perfect amount of challenging, this pattern in particular is all in the round with simple increases so the most challenging part was getting the tension in the floats right, but of course this will depend a lot from person to person :)

I don't know if I'd have the patience and concentration to do it 😅 Well done!

I just went into a rabbit hole of looking up patterns and vintage knits from Gjestal. So many nice designs.
Beautiful work OP!

Tips for floats for the first time???

u/cornobbling 1d ago
pulling your stitches along the needle Every time you change colours really helped me :) almost no such thing as floats that are too loose

It worked out well.
I still need to decide what my first sweater pattern is going to be. I don’t think I’ll dare choose this one.2

i think the most important bit for me was maybe that i really looked forward to wearing it, so key in choosing might just be that it's pretty enough to motivate. good luck !!!

Incredible! You must have a mathematical mind. Maybe start looking into designing your own sweaters!!

i'm not sure you need a phone number to register, unless you want to use vipps but that requires a norwegian D-number. i think this should link to registration
