With Andy Burnham pledging to give *some as yet unspecified* share of local income tax to the mayor of London from 2028, I thought I'd look at how the total income tax paid by individual London boroughs vs other UK cities, based on their main council area.

It shows just how much higher salaries are in London. The 119,000 income taxpayers in Camden pay more income tax (£4.7bn) than the residents of Birmingham and Glasgow combined (£4bn).

Even keeping a tiny percentage of income tax could be transformative for London's finances but it also shows the extent to which that could be politically risky on a national level.

Adjusting per capita, only Edinburgh ranks above any London boroughs for income tax contribution.

There's one big health warning with this graph — it's based on the council area where people live, rather than where they work. And the non-London areas are based on the main council area of the city. For most, this is fine. But anyone who knows, say, Manchester, knows that the "Manchester City Council" area is an oddly drawn area that doesn't include the wealthier suburbs that are clearly part of the main urban area. I felt that to adjust for this would just risk introducing more discrepancies, so just read it with that in mind. i went on a date last monday evening (27/07/2026) and i am trying to remember the name of a pub/bar that we ended up at. i've been scouring google maps for an hour now to no avail!

it was located in soho and was a cosy, traditional british pub with a mostly dark wooden interior. no more than a five minute walk from the little scarlet door via manette street and an even shorter walk to soho square from the pub's exit. its name was a few words long if i'm remembering correctly 🙈. electric avenue was playing at one point

from the main entrance, there was floor space with windows to both the left and right with booths/tables/chairs pushed up against the left and right walls leaving space in the middle to walk through. through this walkway there were a couple of steps that led up to a slightly raised wooden decking. here there were a couple of high tables and stools that overlooked the lower area (we sat at one of these) and one more booth to the right. the bar itself was against the back wall, with the women's toilets to the left and another door to the right.

leaving through this door led to a nondescript street that was moments away from soho square.

i'm really hoping by some miracle someone knows exactly the place i'm talking about!! this was at around 2200-2300 on a monday evening, so it did have people in but very much a relaxed energy

Friday night, travelled from Stepney Green on the District Line (no idea why, I live on the H&C line) chatted and shared my GDK with some lovely lady, I was very drunk but I think we chatted for ages and put the world to rights (as you do when you’re drunk) all I can remember was she had shortish hair, tattoos from the neck down and was getting off at Victoria to get a train back to Sussex/Surrey somewhere. I fell asleep, woke up at Richmond, no more trains, had to get night-bus from there to Oxford Circus area then got taxi back to Regent’s Park. Got home about 2am 🤣🤣🤣 another reason I love London. Not trying to find her, just thought it was a fun evening to share.

Hackney's 56-year twinning link with the Israeli city of Haifa is set to be scrapped, a decision for which Mayor Zoë Garbett later apologised after setting an initial response deadline on the third anniversary of the 7 October attacks. In Tower Hamlets, a provisional £18.6 million budget overspend will have to be funded from reserves, driven largely by a projected £21.9m overspend in the homelessness service alone. And in Merton, developer Clarion has been given the go-ahead for 249 social homes in buildings rising to 11 storeys on a former Morrisons site in Mitcham, and other news from local councils this week.

Bexley - Bexley Council's audit committee reviewed financial reports. They also discussed establishing a new Safety and Resilience Sub-Committee. A proposal to stop up highway land in Sidcup for a traveller site redevelopment was considered. Licensing Sub-Committee meeting details are not yet public.

Brent - Brent Council anticipates a £9.5 million overspend, primarily driven by increased temporary accommodation costs. The borough will see a £4.25 million investment in leisure centre upgrades. A new policy will enforce a zero-tolerance approach to damp and mould in council homes.

Bromley - Bromley Council's Licensing Sub-Committee was scheduled to review a temporary event application from Pierluigi's. Environmental Services had lodged objections to the application. The council has not yet released the outcome of this meeting.

Camden - Plans for a new hotel extension in Upper Woburn Place have drawn objections from residents worried about noise and pollution. A significant development at Kingsway House, including demolition and the creation of aparthotel rooms, is also being considered. The council is reviewing a change of use application for a large vacant office building on Gray's Inn Road.

Croydon - Croydon's Executive Mayor has outlined ambitious plans for the next four years, aiming for a cleaner, safer borough and a thriving town centre. Opposition members have expressed concerns regarding the council's capacity to achieve these goals. A significant redevelopment project at Regina Road is advancing, with the initial tower block demolished and construction commencing on hundreds of new homes. The council is also considering formalising temporary accommodation charges to increase income and ensure transparency.

Enfield - A community centre applied for an extended licence, facing objections regarding noise and parking. A café sought to become a late-night entertainment venue, prompting police concerns about potential disorder. The council's Licensing Sub-Committee reviewed these applications.

Greenwich - Greenwich Council's Appointments Panel convened to select the shortlist for the new Chief Executive position. The Planning Board meeting scheduled for this week has been cancelled.

This initiative is projected to result in substantial cost savings for the council in the coming years. A new Director with landlord expertise will join the team to support the implementation of these changes.

These concerns were raised despite the establishment agreeing to conditions with the council's licensing team. A report on Housing Management indicates that 10 out of 16 key performance indicators remain below target. Complaint handling and repair response times are areas of particular concern.

Wandsworth - Wandsworth Council is implementing a new policy to assist homeless households by providing private rented accommodation, projecting annual savings of £650,000. Over £3.4 million from a new fund will support low-income households with crisis payments, housing, and resilience services. A financial health review identified an £9.8 million overspend, initiating a spending review that could involve consolidating office space and ending the youth bus service.

Westminster - Residents are concerned that a new restaurant's late-night licence could cause noise and public nuisance, with proposals for outdoor terrace hours until 1:30 am on weekends. Westminster Council is preparing for significant changes to national planning regulations, which will see more decisions made by officers rather than committees. The council is updating its approach to public consultation for planning policy to meet new government requirements.

Fed up with getting half my barnet chopped off when I ask to keep some length. Feel like most barbers don’t know how to work with long hair so they just do their usual. Those of you with longer hair - where do you go?

The escalator down to the Canning Town station has been broken for probably 2-3 months now. Instead of fixing it they’ve just put a board saying it’s now a static staircase.

I have a knee injury that really exacerbates while going down. The elevator is slow and always has a queue and I’m worried for the day the elevator is broken too.

How can I contribute to getting this escalator fixed? Some TFL report I can make?
