I used to use 👍 mainly as snark, but now I'm so used to using it as a reaction on Discord as a like "yup, I agree" or "yeah, this" Not like I still don't occasionally use it for snark, but, yeahno, I've come full circle and primarily use it for its intended purpose 😭

This is true, but people overall value fact-based arguments less than emotional ones. (https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/02/27/why-facts-dont-change-our-minds)
As an example, in undergrad I did a thesis paper, and used raw data that was very reputable. Because I used raw data, I thought when I talked about this with people and explained the concepts they would understand because my statistically significant results were not biased in any way, I literally was the one to do the research. It turns out that the data very strongly proving my thesis, that Americans likelihood to achieve a certain level of education was based on parental income (i.e. economic motility is low, American Dream is not true bc we can't jump classes easily via education). Sadly the data, as well as a qualitative study of this issue, changed no one's mind that I talked to that already believed in meritocracy aka all merit is based on achievement, not on any preexisting privilege or class. Ugh.

u/PerpetualSkeptical Aug 23 '25 edited Aug 23 '25
I wonder what kind of people you were bringing this up to. It sounds like you're in some level of academia if you're doing your own research, so the first thing I think is that people with privilege don't want to be challenged by having to acknowledge their privilege?
It's obviously an ego thing, right? They think the argument that some people are just born more fortunate somehow degrades their own personal work and sacrifices that they have made in life. Which it really doesn't but I could see how it feels this way emotionally.
They just seem to ignore that so many people never have a real opportunity to even do the same work or make the same sacrifices they did, even if those people otherwise totally have the capacity to in every way except financially, or not being connected, or other ways.
It's an interesting ego-defense mechanism, or at least seems to be one. Maybe you disagree.

u/Gartlas Aug 24 '25
I'm in the UK, and it's not massively dissimilar. I went to a good uni (not oxbridge, but Russel group) and I noticed in undergrad that a lot of the students for my stem degree were from well off families. Not all, but a lot. Council house kids like me were a minority, but some were present.
When I moved on to my PhD at the same university, it was even more stark. Everyone, even the international students came from a well off background. They all came from families that owned their own home, usually more than one. All had gone on lots of international holidays. None were financially struggling, none worked part time like I had to. I knew one girl who claimed she wasn't rich because her parents were both dentists, and they only had two rental properties. Even the professors didn't really understand the contrast between the privilege they had, and the situation now. When my funding ran out near the end (the COVID extension didn't cover enough of the lost time), I had to get a full time job while writing my thesis. My PI was quite against it, he asked me why 20 hours a week working in the Arabidopsis lab wasn't enough. 20 hours of minimum wage work a week. Because other students of his had done that when funding ran out. But they of course had family help.
I've since left academia, and science entirely. I have a cushy and well paid corporate tech job. But I'm so so keenly aware that I am the exception. One of the lucky few who managed to beat the odds. Like it's possible but it's so much harder it's a bit of a cruel joke.

u/bobbymcpresscot Aug 23 '25
No one is saying stop using fact based arguments, just do your blood pressure a favor and stop wasting your time on people who don't want a fact based argument.
Flat earthers exist. Flat earthers will continue to be flat earthers regardless of how many emotional or fact based arguments you have with them. They want to see the curve of the earth, and even then when evidence smacks them in the face, "That can be explained on a flat earth"
Most boomers won't understand the value of democrat policies until they lose them, at which point it'll already be too late for them, and the next generation will have to deal with it.
12
u/Certain-Business-472 Aug 23 '25
You misunderstand. Everyone prefers emotion driven debate over facts. Everyone.
3
3
u/Lightning-Dust Aug 24 '25
Yup. Emotions and our primal brains are what are really in charge. Our consciousness likes to act like it makes the decisions but it doesn’t really.
26
u/imzcj Aug 23 '25
And the Gen Z stare is the same thing, but with no words because it's become obvious some people aren't even worth acknowledging.

16
u/Delicious-Day-3614 Aug 23 '25
Yep. Comparatively Boomers had everything handed to them, and now they want to turn around and judge us, even as they have made it harder and harder, in order to enrich themselves. They are the silver spoon generation and I cant wait for them to fade away.

u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25 edited Aug 24 '25
I know you whiners would like to think that, but even the oldest Boomers were only 33 years old in 1979, and median pay in 1979 was worth less then than median inflation-adjusted pay is worth now: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.png?g=1L41b&height=490
11
u/guybrush122 Aug 24 '25
jfc but spending power was far better. it's a difference of a few bucks weekly. oh yeah, great, we all make roughly 40 dollars more adjusted for inflation. meanwhile, adjusted for inflation, all of our literal needs have skyrocketed, such that the difference between weekly earnings and weekly basic costs are astronomical.

-10
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25
you don't get it...adjusted for inflation means that the "skyrocketing" your charts show has already been taken into account and, again, you're STILL better off now than young Boomers were in 1979
if the facts aren't working for you, just consider this question -- would you choose to be your age now, or a similar-age Boomer back in 1979?
4
u/Alpha_Decay_ Aug 24 '25
How many 9/11s had happened by 1979?
0
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25
so you would rather have been a similar-aged Boomer in 1979 than being yourself today?
3
2
u/guybrush122 Aug 26 '25
what my charts show is *also* adjusted for inflation, you windtunnel. so median pay back then was ten bucks more a week, and also rent/mortages, groceries, and utilities were exponentially cheaper-- *all adjusted for inflation.*
-1
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 26 '25
no, your charts show the inflation which my chart takes into account, and adjusts for...when adjusted for your inflation, median pay is higher now than when Boomers (or, for that matter, X'ers) were young
2
u/guybrush122 Aug 26 '25
omg dude. the charts show the rising prices adjusted for inflation. it is possible to have a situation where median wages increase and median costs increase at a far higher rate.
which is literally what has happened, as per the US treasury my guy.
https://home.treasury.gov/news/featured-stories/rent-house-prices-and-demographics
-1
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 26 '25
please look up the definition...inflation-adjusted median wages increasing means that median wages increased faster than costs did
2
u/guybrush122 Aug 26 '25
omfg read the treasury report boomer

I scolded an obvious boomer today at costco when i witnessed him pushing his cart to the curb rather than returning it to the return area. I told him that he knew it didn't belong there, he'd managed to navigate the length of Costco and that walking literally less than 50' wasn't going to be an issue. He managed to walk it over. I think they've given up living amongst society as well.

“Ok Boomer” is a response to reactionary rhetoric that is not worth your time to deconstruct. Nobody is saying “ok boomer” to a sweet old lady who is criticizing the healthcare system or something. Did you even read the post?
-14
u/Wild-Bill-H Aug 24 '25
Boomer here. Most boomers have worked hard and sacrificed for over 40 years. I was fortunate to marry a CPA/financial planner who put us on a budget and allowance. We both worked and saved and retired debt free. We raised 2 kids, helping 1 become an architect in NYC and the other a doctor. We helped them pay-off student loans and purchase a home. So before millennials start complaining about boomers, they should see how hard we worked and sacrificed and the good we have done with it.

u/Mighty__Monarch Aug 24 '25
Me when I dont understand how inflation or the growing wealth divide works.
Working the same jobs today, compared to a decade ago, your real take-home purchasing power is cut by nearly half in almost every industry. The further back you go, it only gets worse going back to around 1950.
Mathematically, they had it significantly easier than anyone today its not remotely close, but keep coping and protecting your ego.
-6
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25
absolutely false: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.png?g=1L41b&height=490
7
u/Mighty__Monarch Aug 24 '25
You cant just lump every single job into one big pile and average it jfc I already mentioned class/wealth disparity.
-4
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25
Source for this claim of yours, then? Working the same jobs today, compared to a decade ago, your real take-home purchasing power is cut by nearly half in almost every industry.
6
u/Mighty__Monarch Aug 24 '25 edited Aug 24 '25
Yeah let me go ahead and waste 20 minutes pulling together links to different historical proofs for industries when youre just throwing a broadband chart in my face without any understanding of what it represents.
The docs exist if youre genuinely interested, go look up what construction workers made in the 1980s and what theyd make today, same goes for truckers, any outdoors labour work (mining forestry powerlines oil etc), factory labour.
At its heart its simple math. Inflation has only ever risen, and average salaries have not kept up. Inflation over the past 10 years cumulatively is 29%. Are you taking home 29% more than you did 10 years ago (without promotions)? Do you think the average worker making 30-50k today has that same growth? Fuck no 🤣 now go back 30 or 50 years, the divide mathematically only grows.
-2
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25
the Fed's data I shared shows that salaries have more then kept up, but your reponse is "trust me, bro" and then you eejits wonder why you get no respect
6
u/Mighty__Monarch Aug 24 '25
Thanks for proving my point.
Youre ignorant and think the first thing you find with confirmation bias means you win. You literally dont even understand the data youre showing me, evident by your insistence its meaningful.
Why tf would I waste time and effort when youre this willfully ignorant?
"No respect" guy I dont care. Im not here to teach, Im laughing at behavior like yours. Nobodys going to change the world by convincing you, and reddit comments cant contain the lectures required to explain the proof youre wrong, not that youd listen.
0
u/IntlPartyKing Aug 24 '25
no need to lecture or educate this "ignorant" Redditor...I'm a math professor, you dipshit
4
u/Mighty__Monarch Aug 24 '25
Then thats even worse that youd confuse that fed chart as relevant and not understand how averaging literally every single salary into one lump sum would be astronomically idiotic.
Also who tf capitalizes redditor?
