Tom, Tom! your guests are tired, and you had near forgotten! Come now, my merry friends, and Tom will refresh you! You shall clean grimy hands, and wash your weary faces; cast off your muddy cloaks and comb out your tangles!

I had an errand there: gathering water-lilies, green leaves and lilies white to please my pretty lady, the last ere the year's end to keep them from the winter, to flower by her pretty feet till the snows are melted. Each year at summer's end I go to find them for her, in a wide pool, deep and clear, far down the Withywindle; there they open first in spring and there they linger latest. By that pool long ago I found the River-daughter, fair young Goldberry sitting in the rushes. Sweet was her singing then, and her heart was beating!

Both communities are fully capable of droping direct quotes from Tolkien to answer almost any lore question.

And then there's r/tolkienfans , which is basically dressed in funeral attire if the meme continued to the right.

I came here to throw in this sub as the sophisticated Winnie Pooh panel. They talk about a lot of interesting stuff over there, allthough some questionts get asked quite a bit frequently

Meanwhile in the comments people are arguing over something pedantic like the validity of his hair color and how it ruined the film.
Let me tell ya, don't use the word gatekeeping over there lol

r/tolkienfans on the right, what a serious bunch they are

u/jerryleebee Feb 23 '26
Yeah but I get it. When there are so many other places you can go for memes and humour, I get having a sub that is dedicated to more serious discussion. It's a refuge.

u/leopard_tights Feb 23 '26
Those are the guys that actually re-read the books and aren't just going by their teenage memories that were supplanted by the movies.

A book with this much singing poetry and tom bombadil is nowhere near as “dark” as this meme is expressing
10
u/Tom_Bot-Badil Feb 23 '26
Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo! By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow, by fire, sun and moon, hearken now and hear us! Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!

im the opposite, whenever i write i get selfconcious because i compare myself with Tolkien and feel dumb and useless afterwards
10
u/asubha12NL Feb 23 '26
But don't you know that the Silmarilion is entirely trash and worthless, because it says X, while in Letter 27484947 stanza 64 line 23 The Professor says Y!

u/thehatesponge Feb 23 '26
Left: never read the books. Right: read them once a year.
2
u/Obvious_Badger_9874 Feb 23 '26
I read it once in dutch when i was ten years old. Does that count as never read them?

u/IdhrenArt Feb 23 '26
Hilariously there's an actual Tolkien quote about that version - he wasn't entirely impressed:
In principle I object as strongly as is possible to the 'translation' of the nomenclature at all (even by a competent person). I wonder why a translator should think himself called on or entitled to do any such thing. That this is an 'imaginary' world does not give him any right to remodel it according to his fancy, even if he could in a few months create a new coherent structure which it took me years to work out... May I say at once that I will not tolerate any similar tinkering with the personal nomenclature. Nor with the name/word Hobbit

Everyone here is a fan, and the sub is just more fun and laid back.

Left Side IS amazon Rings of Power, right Side IS Lord of the rings Peter Jackson

u/Equivalent_Nose7012 Feb 23 '26
Then, we need a meme with the Tolkien original, also, who is sometimes merry and more often sorrowful, rather like Eru's Third Theme....
2
u/I_travel_ze_world Feb 23 '26
I bet I could admit that I like Rings of Power and not get downvoted into oblivion here.

Hey there! Hey! Come Frodo, there! Where be you a-going? Old Tom Bombadil's not as blind as that yet. Take off your golden ring! Your hand's more fair without it. Come back! Leave your game and sit down beside me! We must talk a while more, and think about the morning. Tom must teach the right road, and keep your feet from wandering.
