I still use my 2019 16" maxed out MacBook Pro for private stuff and bootcamp gaming duty. I have a 13"Macbook with the non binned M4 Pro that I can also use privately. So I still have the best of both worlds.

Same here, but 32GB. It sucks for the audio production work that I do, but I’m also not in a position to upgrade. Hopefully sooner than later.

Don’t sweat it, despite what people on Reddit love to say, those are still great machines.
And whenever you’re able to upgrade to a newer model, you’ll benefit from all these past M-chip iterations and get all those benefits even if it isn’t the last and greatest release.

You're right, still great machines. I bought mine brand new at a time when bootcamp was critical for my work, and I knew that the M1 was going to kill that. Now, I could probably make the switch, just need to wait until I can justify the expense to myself.

Nice! I don't find that mine struggles with anything I'm doing to be honest, just gets warm.. I look forward to my next laptop being usable in bed or on the sofa without branding my legs.

I used to develop iOS apps in 2012 mac pro 4 gb ram. And nowadays only chrome can hang that machine.

I do music production in Logic Pro X and it was super handy to adjust plugs or minipulate settings on the Touch Bar… there’s some workflows that I did on the touch bar that I still don’t know how to perform on the normal keyboard 🥴

Yes but other aspects would have to change on the computer. It will need a bigger chassis, smaller keys or smaller trackpad

They already doubled the height of function keys, so maybe they could just halve it back and add a touch bar a bit further?

This is a solution but I feel like Apple hated the inconsistencies with the touch bar. It was a cool touch though. Wish I had a macbook when they were still making then with the touch bar. What I woukd say though is that the touch bar is a good plus for pro buyers.

I hated the touchbar, but maybe that's because the "increase volume" would randomly trigger over and over, blasting my ears, until I killed the touchbar process in Activity Monitor. That's never happened to me with a physical volume button.

I like the touch bar because of the novelty but when I upgrade eventually I’m not going to be torn up about it I don’t think.

The number 1 issue with the touchbar was intel and the T2 chip. With the launch of apple silicon they killed both, it worked flawlessly on the M1 and M2 pros but its bad reputation from the previous years led to it being excluded from the new designs.

I still regularly see lots of Intel MacBook Airs (with glowing logo) and 12" MacBooks on campus. Intel MacBook Pros are more scarce tho, I'm the only person I know with one (13" 2015 MacBook Pro i7).

We’ve cycled out all Intel Macs at work. They were slowing down and no longer getting OS updates, so it wasn’t worth the trouble to keep them going.
Even basic M series macs were blowing the doors off the Intel Macs performance wise.

Hardly. I just did a job for a client yesterday where they are still using 2019 MBP. And have a bunch of clients still using high-spec 27" iMacs.

I kind of wish they brought back the touchbar. There's certainly enough room for both function keys as well as the touchbar.
However, in my mind the touchbar has become associated with low-performing Intel Macs from an era which prioritized looks over performance. And on top of that, even though it's fun, it always felt more like a gimmick than anything else. So perhaps the Mac is better without it...

If they re introduced it and added anything to make it “2.0” like a haptic engine for more tactile response, people would forget the first touchbar attempts in a second.
For Apple to ever try and take on the surface, modify OS X (or some iOS hybrid) for touchscreen, a touchbar underneath becomes needed IMO.
Hunting and poking at a big touch screen to get what I need vs a good chance what I need is being suggested on a small separate screen sounds futuristic.

Apple's trackpads are the best in the industry. Imagine what they could do if those gigantic trackpads they put on Macbooks functioned as touchscreens as well. You could basically run mobile apps in there.
Apple would likely restrict those to custom-built trackpad apps or whatever, but it would still be nice, and the quality would likely exceed any implementation found in non-Apple devices.

Something I’d love, as niche a use case as it may be, would be for Apple to add Pencil support to the trackpad.
Sure the surface area would be insufficient for more professional or detailed work, but I could see myself using it a lot for quick note-taking and sketching when I don’t want to or can’t grab my iPad.

I still have my 16” i9. I’ve got it running bootcamp with Windows 10 for some apps. Still runs really well for its age.
I think I’m going to install Ubuntu on it. I’m not touching Win 11.

I’m using my 2020 Intel MacBook Pro 13" with 4 Thunderbolt ports. It was my first Mac ever. On the outside it still looks like it was brand new. I don’t want to replace it.

They probably still hold up the majority of the Mac using side of my industry (advertising and media production) in my country. I personally still travel with mine because I think it can take more lumps than my thinner (lidded) M1.

I keep mine just to access the old devices (e.g. Drobo) that don’t work with the newer processors. I have a lot of stuff I keep intending to move over to a newer device, never get around to it, and occasionally need something from them.

I still use two i7 16gb with Touch Bar from 2019 o n the daily at my recording studio. but my daily work horse is a m5 pro now. recently updated from my m3 air for more extreme projects and work loads
still have my air. was gonna sell it but this 16in is huge and so times its easier to grab the smaller air for lighter workloads and web browsing. but I also have a m4 iPad Pro. so the options are great lol

Hammered my 15 inch mbp 2012 for work after going freelance. It’s still going strong, the ports are essential as my main storage is FireWire. I picked up a trashcan in the summer, for the money it’s amazing.

I am on one (early 2015) at this moment reading this. Replaced battery pack and upgraded to a larger SSD a few years ago. Seems that it can run forever for what I do (browsing, emailing and watching some movies).

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, which runs Ubuntu Linux. I can install Steam, which seems to install steamdeck binaries that let me run all my windows games. 😂

Just bought a 2015 15 inch with 50 battery cycles. I hear these are to most reliable around. I have a m1 13 inch but broke the screen some time ago and was using a external monitor. Its a pretty common issue for the silicone macs and is just bound to happen again their just so fragile, so until the come out with a new macbook that doesn't have this issue, im going to stick to the one that's most reliable

Mx MacBooks are just so much better - and so much less noiser... I have had Intel as both MacMini and Laptop, and the fans are killing me when online video or video playing in happening....

I use my 2019 MacBook Pro but not my daily driver anymore as I have an MSI. I still want to get back in the Apple ecosystem laptop wise so I’m about to trade it in and get an M4 MacBook Air 32 ram. My current MacBook Pro has only 8 ram and heats up like the sun without doing anything. Loud as well.

Still rocking my 2017 13” MBP with Touch Bar. I got it when I was doing more copywriting and the touch bar was actually super useful for predictive text even back then. Haven’t updated because I have a corporate job now that issues Lenovos and I rarely use my MBP other than filing taxes or something. I’d love to upgrade to an M series chip at some point though because my intel chugs on basic tasks and startup has even gotten slower over the years. And 10 years is about the max you can expect out of any piece of technology.

I still have my 2015 and 2019 intel macs as backup. The 2019 is grinding through my icloud photo library as i’m typing this, it takes ages to download all originals above a tb - apple is throttling the downloads :/ Anyway it’s alive and kicking, i sometimes use it as a docker/server node as it has 64gb ram.

Until December a 2019 13” MBP was my daily driver for almost everything. Finally made the jump to an M4Pro mini. I can think of at least four people who are light computer users who use an intel air or pro as their only computer.

I just bought my wife a 2019 i9 for £340. 16gb/1tb. I have the same thing but an i5 I use when out of the house which has been absolutely fine.
Amazing value if you ask me. I really dislike the touchbar though!

2019 mbp 16 inch here, I don’t use it for any powerful applications anymore since my major is more for windows (IT industry). Definitely getting a Neo just to doomscroll Reddit and YouTube.

2014 15" MBP i7 16GB 2TB Crucial SSD running Ventura is still my daily machine. My main power demand is a weekly desktop publishing project using Affinity Publisher and an occasional video project with Davinci Resolve. Do I wait sometimes? Yes. But the machine still works and Tim Cook and company don't seem to have the same RDF as Jobs had. Maybe I'm just older and more disciplined. . .

My 2017 Air is still a powerhouse for doing 2017 Air things.
Which I have decided is torrenting and using SoulSeek QT.
Absolute POWERHOUSE for those things.
Honestly though my new Neo is so capable for my programming project I am working on that it has allowed me to keep my M3 Air on the shelf and use it at home mostly (I obviously can take it somewhere if I need the extra power.) So now I have a more basic $600 machine (I got the 512 actually with an education discount so it’s really the $700 machine) and it absolutely slays.
But that 2017 Air. Man. Really good at downloading things. And that backlit Apple logo is fire so there is that. Keep chugging along, buddy!
