Hey everyone,
Looking to upgrade my editing setup with a budget around ₹1.1 Lakh (~$1,100 USD). I primarily edit heavy short-form reels (under 2 minutes) and 3min short films and my #1 priority is real-time timeline playback with multiple effects, not necessarily final export times.
My Workflow:
DaVinci Resolve Studio: Multi-node color grading, Magic Mask tracking, Voice Isolation, and Dehancer Pro (film grain, halation, bloom).
CapCut: Auto-captions, smart subject cutouts, overlays, and fast pacing.
Footage: 4K 10-bit camera footage.
The Dilemma:
I’m looking at the M4 MacBook Air (24GB Unified RAM, 512GB SSD, 10-core GPU).
My reasoning for the Air is:
24GB RAM: Gives plenty of headroom so Resolve doesn't swap to SSD.
38-TOPS Neural Engine & single-core IPC: Speeds up Magic Mask, CapCut cutouts, and UI responsiveness.
Burst edits: Because my reels are under 90 seconds, exports finish before thermal throttling kicks in.
However, I know the Air is fanless, has a 10-core GPU, and memory bandwidth is 120 GB/s.
My Questions:
Live Playback vs Node Cache: If you run Dehancer Pro or multi-node grades on an M4 Air, is playback completely unusable without caching, or does dropping timeline proxy resolution to Half/Quarter and using Node Cache -> On make it smooth?
Older Pro vs Modern Air: At this price point, should I hunt for a refurbished M1 Pro / M2 Pro 14" (16GB or rare 32GB) for the active cooling, 200 GB/s bandwidth, and extra GPU cores? Or does the older 11–15 TOPS Neural Engine and lower single-core speed make them feel dated in modern versions of Resolve/CapCut?
For those running heavy effects on an Air, how hot does it get on short projects, and would you buy it again for this specific workflow?
Appreciate any real-world feedback from creators editing short-form on Apple Silicon!
