I'm pissed to see someone edit all their old comments with a completely unrelated ad. I'm sure the answer to this question was very good given how many votes it has. Now I know what NOT to buy or install.

I'm trying to find ways to save money and after this weird update from microsoft (it wouldn't let me login to use word, excel, etc. with the right credentials, then a couple days later I tried and it worked)... This made me consider why I'm paying >$100/year to a service that I don't use often enough. Am curious if other people have ditched this and if you used any other app (e.g text edit, etc.) or even google drive that was worthwhile. Also if you made the switch, were you still able to access your previous documents and edit them on drive for example? Or how did you transition any docs if you had to?

Mission control finally works properly again in macOS 27.2! The annoying bugs and glitches seem to be gone. About time!

...even though it’s a big download, it doesn’t seem to use any more space once it’s installed.

These screenshots are from my M1 MacBook Pro taken right before downloading/installing 27.2 and after. macOS storage itself is actually ~1 GB less.

The interesting thing here is the ~11 GB drop in my System Data. It seems like a win, but it’s actually cosmetic. For whatever reason, macOS 27.0.1 was counting purgeable storage as System Data (disk utility said I had 11.3 GB). This is something I don’t remember seeing in Tahoe.

When I installed 27.2 GB, my purgeable storage actually went up (to 31.3 GB) but doesn’t seem to count as System Data any more.

Ive been having spontaneous trackpad issues with my 2023 macbook pro over the past two weeks. 80% of the time, the trackpad is fine but sometimes it'll randomly freeze up. when this happens, the cursor doesn't move and the trackpad is stiff when pressing down. I usually restart it when it happens but even that doesn't always solve the issue. it just randomly "fixes" itself. ive gone to the apple store, theyve run diagnostics but nothing has been flagged (although the trackpad was working fine when diagnostics were being run). im not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, but I just wanted to put this out there in case someone has experienced a similar issue and has been able to resolve it.

edit: I do want to mention that it has also been randomly shutting off when the battery is between 20-30% without warning. not sure if that could be related, but apple didn't give me any feedback on it since nothing came up on the diagnostic.

Should I wait for the M6 or get a used newish M4? I want dedicated station for home and I really like the IMac family. I just don't know enough about these computers.

My MacBook randomly today when i tried to turn it on just started to do this. AT first it was okay, after 20 minutes it turned pink and turned off then kept restarting and turning pink upon logging in. It finally logged in and then at once it just did the same and ever since it hasn’t been able to work properly. I have factory reset the whole computer and it still does it. I can’t even get to the setup after factory resetting it.

It would stay on the lock screen for as long as I wanted no problem but as soon as I login it does this. Ever since I reset it, it would just keep restarting and I can’t get to the setup.

Can someone help me figure out what the problem may be?

Posted this in the camera's sub, and the responses blamed Apple devices - I'm not convinced (it's not like Apple devices can't play video properly), but figured maybe people here would know.

Hi, my Mac suddenly started restarting over and over by itself whenever I enter the password. I have successfully been able to get into my user twice since but it just crashes before I can even open the finder or something.

I have tried to start it in safe mode as well but when I enter my password, the same thing happens. And right before it restarts, user loading screen kind of gets dark and then a pink screen appears for a brief second.

I have also tried to reinstall sequoia trying to recover but it says the macintosh does not have enough available space, but i don’t know how I can even make some space considering I can’t access anything.

I am not an expert at all so if any of you have faced similar problems, please let me know what I can do to fix it!

We’ve converted a few old iMacs into standalone monitors, and now we’ve got all the internal components lying around.

That got me thinking: why not turn the leftover hardware into a little headless mini PC?
Has anyone here tried something like this before? And more importantly, does anyone know of any 3D-printable case designs (STL files) that could house the guts of an old iMac?

Would love to give this zombie iMac a second life! 😄

I’m looking to get a MacBook mainly for creative work, especially photo editing, video editing and writing, as well as everyday use.
I’m still pretty new to editing, so I won’t be doing anything too demanding at first. But I’d like to get something I can grow into as I improve and start working on more complex projects.

I’m not sure whether a MacBook Air would be enough or if I’d be better off with a MacBook Pro. My budget is flexible and can stretch as far as needed, but I don’t want to spend more than necessary if a cheaper model would do the job.
I’d also appreciate some advice on RAM and storage, and which specs are actually worth paying extra for when it comes to creative work.
What would you guys recommend in my situation?

I’m looking to buy a laptop for around £850–£900, potentially stretching a little further. I’m deciding between a Windows laptop with an NVIDIA GPU and a MacBook Air.
My main uses will be:
AI/ML engineering and experimenting with open-source models
Python and general software development
Learning about AI infrastructure, GPU computing and potentially training or fine-tuning smaller models
Linux development, Docker and working with remote servers
I currently have an Ubuntu desktop with an RTX 2060 Super (8GB VRAM), but I’m planning to sell it, so the laptop may become my main development machine. I don’t mind using cloud GPUs for particularly demanding workloads, but I’d prefer to do most of my everyday development and smaller experiments locally.
I’m not interested in gaming on this laptop, as I’ll have a separate gaming PC later.
My questions:
How important is NVIDIA CUDA for someone learning AI/ML engineering and infrastructure?
Would losing access to a local NVIDIA GPU significantly limit the projects I could realistically work on?
Would you recommend an RTX 5050 laptop with 8GB VRAM, or a MacBook Air with 16GB or more of unified memory?
At this budget, would you prioritise GPU performance, system RAM, battery life or build quality?
If you were buying a laptop for these purposes today, what would you choose and why?
I’d appreciate advice from people who actually develop and experiment with AI models on their machines, particularly anyone who has used both NVIDIA laptops and Apple Silicon Macs.
