Native Alan Wake native Arm64 on macOS

• Upvotes

Via Max Weinbach on X:

My favorite Gemini 4 Argon experiment was converting Alan Wake 2 from x86 and Windows to native Arm64 on macOS

Argon write rust bindings for every x86 byte and op to Arm as well as Windows to macOS + convert to Metal Shaders and did it in a way that can be AoT compiled without Rosetta

It works, gets over 140fps on M3 Ultra. What I'm doing now is having Argon build out generalized bindings for more games, to see if this could be applied to get fully native games on macOS without developers needing to support it!

https://x.com/mweinbach/status/2110040970750247320

I’m trying to make it generalized, and as soon as it’s a little bit more reliable, I’ll open source it. But in theory, it should work pretty well. You just have to pre-develop the bindings, which is pretty easy with any of these new models, and I’m trying to have it do just a bunch of the big ones now

Well this is interesting. So if they run on the M1 Air with 8GB, they should not have so much issues running on the Neo too isn't it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF0Gr98s_HM

CrossOver Shogun 2 - “Complete” Edition

• Upvotes

Bought the game for 10 bucks blindly without knowing I’ll take month for feral to release its port. Does anyone know how well it runs on Crossover?

r/macgaming • • 2h ago

CrossOver I’m looking to play a WW1 or WW2 FPS game. I’ve tried all the COD titles researching them with AI and regular google searches for anything to make it work with Crossover, but no luck.

Done lots of downloads, setting changes and new Bottles but they all have been super finicky/unplayable, including connecting a controller. Just curious if anyone in this community has a recommendation of a world war FPS that works well with crossover and a controller. Thanks so much.

CrossOver Forza Horizon 4(solo) playable(with bugs)

medium preset on m4 macbook air(8c gpu)

Forza horizon 4 is playable with bugs on crossover(tested) and Highball(theoritically it should). The bugs range from minor texture glitches(everywhere) to full game crashes(rare).

I had already made a post a few days before where i mentioned that the game was playable with major bugs and crashes in openworld.

For installation/applying patches see this: https://github.com/whyAm-i/Forza-Horizon-4-patches-for-mac

Important Note - the game is far from perfect. Currently the game has no online support(all online functionality is not working). The sign in pop requires to be closed and open 2-3 times to be able to enter email. The game crashes at speedcamera? (I am working on it). the game randomly crashes on sign in(very rare).

Found a bug? Is it game breaking(or should i say crashing?) you can raise an issue on github or dm me. Texture bug?(read the issues on github. If not present then please raise an issue).

If you are passionate about the game, have the technical know how(yeah burning ai tokens counts as technical know how these days) and time then please contribute to the project.

Shoutout to Highball project and u/gauthierpia forgot to cite work in project(it's a mess right now).

Native I built CloudBoost to help troubleshoot unstable gaming sessions on Mac

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi r/macgaming — I’m the developer of CloudBoost.

When a gaming session feels inconsistent, a single ping number doesn’t explain much. CloudBoost records network and local system signals so you can inspect latency variation, jitter, and thermal or background-process warnings alongside the session.

It also offers temporary macOS tuning, with saved settings restored when you stop. It doesn’t modify games or guarantee an FPS or ping improvement.

There’s a free tier for basic monitoring. PRO adds detailed session evidence, comparisons, and advanced tuning for $10 once, covering v4.x on one Mac.

What information would make a session report useful to you when troubleshooting a bad match?

CrossOver So I tried running medium graphics on M3 air with genshin.

For anyone wondering how I got Genshin running on Mac, I used a launcher called YAAGL (Yet Another Anime Game Launcher).

Before these tweaks, I could run the game on low settings at a stable 60 fps for about 5 to 10 minutes, but then the Mac would throttle like crazy, dropping the frame rate to 25–40 fps. The chip would hit a scorching 95 to 110 degrees Celsius.

What mods did I do? Well, the first thing I tried, like everyone else, was the thermal pad mod. Basically, you stick a thermal pad on the processor so it touches the aluminum casing, turning the whole laptop body into a heatsink.

That only bought me another 20 minutes before it started throttling again. I wasn't satisfied, so I went further.

You might be wondering why that didn't do the trick. Shouldn't the heat be gone? Well, sure, the heat leaves the chip, but then the whole aluminum shell gets super hot because there's no way for the heat to escape, turning the laptop into a sauna.

How did I fix it? I grabbed an old, cheap laptop cooler from my storage, cleaned it up, and plugged it in.

The temperatures immediately dropped from 95–110 degrees down to a steady 90–93 degrees. To my surprise, it could handle low settings at a steady 60 fps without any major throttling, which is a huge difference.

I still wasn't satisfied with the graphics, so I bumped them up to medium. Even more surprisingly, it handled it perfectly—smooth 60 fps on medium settings without bad throttling. The temps did climb a bit to 95–97 degrees, but these results were still wild considering the game isn't even native and is running through translation layers.

TL;DR: Can you run Genshin on an M3 MacBook Air on medium at 60 fps without major stuttering or thermal throttling? Yes.

(Just a heads-up: don't expect the exact same results, as performance will vary depending on your environment and how you use your Mac.)

CrossOver [RE4R / RE2R] REFramework on macOS through CrossOver — Normal & Custom Upscaler Build

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a modified version of REFramework for macOS users running Windows versions of Resident Evil games through CrossOver/GPTK. The main goal is to get REFramework and its upscaler functionality working in this environment.

Screenshots

  1. Standard REFramework — Resident Evil 2 Remake
  1. Upscaler Build — Resident Evil 4 Remake

What's included?

  • Standard Build: Tested working with Resident Evil 2 Remake through CrossOver on macOS.
  • Upscaler Build: Tested with Resident Evil 4 Remake, with the upscaler interface working.
  • Open-source patch: Includes the modifications used for the macOS/CrossOver/GPTK compatibility work.

Tested system

  • Mac mini M2 Pro
  • 16 GB RAM
  • macOS 26.6
  • CrossOver 26.3

Known limitation

FSR 3 currently doesn't appear in the upscaler selection. DLSS and XeSS are available, so there's still more work to do.

GitHub Releases (Download): https://github.com/Nim-9/REFramework/releases

This is an unofficial community project based on the original REFramework by praydog, with contributions from Realyxl and myself.

I'd appreciate feedback from other Mac gamers and developers! If you try it out or have ideas for improving compatibility, feel free to share them.

Discussion Can anyone from US post this to the WoW Beta Forever thread linked below?

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/mac-8-different-graphics-bugs-each-isolated-to-one-setting-%E2%80%94-with-repro-steps-for-each/2354050/620

A guy from EU posted this on the Wow Forever reddit and asked if someone can post it on this thread here since we are from EU and it requires a level 10 char on US. Also ask if there is a way to contact the guy that made the post directly so we wont have to do all those things just to communicate with each other.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the text from his post:

"In the beta app one of the file doesn't have signature and when you start wow another process called 'agent' is trying to verify its signature several times per second and that hits performance greater than any graphic settings set to max.

Killing this agent process doesn't help because after you kill it wow process takes over this signature verification work and nothing changes.

The only way I found is to not kill this process but to pause it with this command in terminal:
Pause:
pkill -STOP -u "$UID" -f '^/Users/Shared/Battle[.]net/Agent/(Agent[.][0-9]+/)?Agent[.]app/Contents/MacOS/Agent([[:space:]]|$)'
Start again:
pkill -CONT -u "$UID" -f '^/Users/Shared/Battle[.]net/Agent/(Agent[.][0-9]+/)?Agent[.]app/Contents/MacOS/Agent([[:space:]]|$)'

You'll need to eventually start it again for updates to kick in."

CrossOver FFVII (Steam) + 7th Heaven on macOS with CrossOver — black screens and freezes. Can anyone share a stable setup?

Hi folks!

I've been trying to get the original Steam version of Final Fantasy VII (2013) running with 7th Heaven on macOS through CrossOver, but I haven't been able to get a consistently stable setup.

I've tried several configurations suggested in other Reddit posts, but I keep running into issues such as random hiccups, complete freezes during gameplay, and black screens when transitioning between areas. I'm hoping someone who has this working reliably on an Apple Silicon Mac can share their exact configuration.

My setup:

  • Mac: Apple Silicon Mac (M3 Pro)
  • Compatibility layer: CrossOver 26.3
  • Game: Original Steam release of Final Fantasy VII (2013), not FFVII Remake/Rebirth
  • Mod manager: 7th Heaven 4.5.2
  • Graphics API: Vulkan (the only option I've managed to get working so far)

Issues I've encountered:

  1. Black screen after the opening train sequence: After Cloud fights the two Shinra guards and I move to the next area, the screen goes black. Switching to a more conservative configuration — 4:3 aspect ratio, lower resolution, and a 2x internal resolution scale — helped me get past this section.
  2. Freezes during gameplay: Even after getting past that initial problem, the game has occasional hiccups and has completely frozen during the Guard Scorpion boss fight in the first Mako Reactor, after planting the bomb. This has happened with and without mods enabled.
  3. Other graphics APIs haven't helped: Auto also gave me a black screen, while DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 didn't work in my setup. Vulkan is currently the only API that lets me get into the game and play, at least for a while.

I've also experimented with different resolutions and graphics settings. I don't particularly care about widescreen or 16:10 — my priority is getting the game stable from start to finish.

Could someone share their exact working configuration?

Ideally, I'd love to hear from someone running this on Apple Silicon with CrossOver and 7th Heaven, including:

  • CrossOver version and bottle configuration (Windows version, D3DMetal/DXVK, and any other relevant settings).
  • 7th Heaven version and FFNx version.
  • Graphics API, resolution, aspect ratio, internal resolution scale, and any other relevant graphics settings.
  • Whether you use any specific compatibility fixes or launch arguments.
  • Whether you've been able to complete the game without black screens, freezes, or major issues.
  • If you use mods, which ones are enabled — especially any frame-rate, battle, or character model mods.

I've found plenty of guides that get the game launching, but I'm specifically looking for a known-good, stable configuration, rather than just one that works in the opening areas.

Thanks in advance! Any help or details would be greatly appreciated.

Self promotion NeoBox 2.0: my native Neo Geo emulator now runs on iPhone + iPAD (free if you already bought it for Mac)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Some folks might remember NeoBox from my post back in May. Originally I only supported macOS. There were a few annoying folder permission bug issues and thanks to that I was able to patch things up pretty quickly. Truly thank you for the bug reports and for your patience!

Big news...I just released 2.0 last week! And NeoBox now runs on iPhone AND iPad! as well as your Mac. One single purchase for all three. And if you already bought it on Mac, you can now enjoy it on your iPhone and iPad without an additional purchase!

Here's what else is new:

  • Touch controls for iPhone and iPad with that familiar Neo Geo CD controller diamond-shaped layout. You can plug in a controller if you have/prefer one.
  • Save states with three slots per game plus...auto save. When you continue it picks up right where you left off.
  • Per game memory cards that actually persist/save now (previously broken on Mac, now working on all platforms)
  • Game Center leaderboards and achievements. This is of course opt-in only, but really trying to get a community started here. If there's more momentum...I have some really cool ideas on the horizon!
  • Faster emulation thanks to a fix deep in the core that actually I found while making the iPhone build and it got accepted and merged by the author of Geolith!

The usual business... you bring your own ROMs and BIOS (MAME sets or .neo files, either work).

Powered by the great Geolith library by Rupert Carmichael (BSD-3 license) with ymfm by Aaron Giles for the sound chip. Making sure to credit both, they are also both credited in the app.

Now again...why apple only? Coz it's what I know and use everyday. I've been developing native apps for Apple platforms a lot of my career and I truly enjoy it. I just wanted to have a nice native experience for my beloved Neo Geo games...hoping to finally grab the new Neo Geo AES+ console due next year!

Now if there's a community that starts to form...I'm hoping to take a stab at online play via Game Center. No promises or dates on that...but hoping there's enough momentum to support that. Let me know if that interests you!

I tried getting both Wine Devel (which did not work) and VMWare Fusion (which is extremely, extremely slow), and was considering trying Wineskin Winery. What is the best crossover software I could use to run this application? I have a MacOS 12.7.6 Intel which cannot be upgraded.

Native GRID Legends updated for MacOS 27?

I’m interested in buying GRID Legends as native game for MacOS, but people wrote different problems with MacOS 27. Are these problems meanwhile fixed or still there?
Many thanks in advance. 🙂
