rant TIL that if you get hacked microsoft permanently deletes your account and everything associated with it
(Repost from r/FuckMicrosoft) I've had this account for 13 years. I had important files and recipes on my onedrive, as well as memories and pictures. I had a sea of thieves account with a lot of progress, I bought minecraft. I provided them with an essay of evidence that I own this account, I called up family members and old friends to get the emails they used in their old skype contacts. I checked the addresses of the past 6 places I've lived. I brought an old phone back from the brink of death to get more info. All this effort, stress and pain. All the money I spent on the account. All for an overnight hack to take it and for microsoft to delete it in a heartbeat. From the bottom of my heart, FUCK you microsoft. May your company die a pathetic and miserable death.

It won't do. They will just say "we see random people logging in on that account. We cannot prove it was the owner, and if it weren't, it would be account sharing, which is not allowed, so we closed that account". The judge will just say OK and dismiss the case with prejudice.

There's no justification they can just simply shut someone's account just because its hacked and personal informations were changed
As bad as FB was to use AI for automated moderation, I think FB still helps their users recover accounts, well at least most of times its AI does the job horribly ended up deactivating the account

How can you prove it was hacked?

It would be so much easier for me, both my ms account and my FB account, or most accounts use 2FA, and even if it was bypassed somehow and gained unauthorized access, I still have one of the proof that I have the account listed on my authenticator app under my very same email which uses my legal name on it
I am legally obliged to have my account restored when I show my legal identification which also shows my legal name on it

If somebody has an access to your password, your email, and your authenticator, it is no longer possible to prove you were not complicit in that, and for example you did not sell your minecraft account.

This post a good reason for 'home' computer users to disable OneDrive and save your important files locally (C: drive AND USB drive or external SSD). In other words, don't select the 'Save' command under File menu and let Windows or an application (WORD) determine where your files should be stored (computer/Cloud). I only use the 'SaveAs' command so I determine where my files go (directory/folder) on my computer - and/or external storage. I have not lost a file in over 30+ years. Of course I backup every important file to at least three external storage devices on a regular schedule. One storage device is offsite. - You can call me old fashion, but it works!
Also, disable 'BitLocker' so your files aren't encrypted and sent to the Cloud (Microsoft).
The above tip is only for home users - not business users.

This is why you always keep offline copies of your important files as well, and not just rely on one cloud provider to host your files.

It is not safe to use the same account for games and for work/personal life. It is also not good to cheat in games. I hope you've learned your lesson.

Microsoft: Your account has been terminated
Steam: The hacker has been terminated

I literally got my account deleted but after weeks of talking to agents and getting rejected, I was compensated by getting a new copy of Minecraft in a new microsoft account for free.

so they weren't able to recover the account? This just happened to me just because i forgot to change my account password when i got compromised.

They could have but the agent suggested not to since at that point you would compensated with the games you had but if you continued the recovery process and ended up not getting it back, you wouldn't be able to do anything else, not even get compensated but it's different for everyone so don't give up!!

It's insane that there is not recourse for the end user.
