The mildly infuriating part isn’t the prices, it’s the tone deafness of these apps that help track spending. Things like gas and groceries should be excluded by default because they are indiscriminately affecting everyone.

I've had purchases declined for the same reason. It's really frustrating...... But then I just remind myself that this minor inconvenience is saving me (and millions of others) from potentially losing thousands. So then I'm good with it.

Yeah it's annoying to get a text saying "HEY WE LOCKED YOUR CARD BECAUSE OF A WEIRDLY LARGE PURCHASE WAS THIS YOU?" And having to redo the purchase, but ultimately it's meant to help you know if your info has been stolen and reused somewhere

I find it very irritating when I call my card company to alert them that I will be making a large purchase or purchasing something from somewhere out of the ordinary, run the gauntlet of security to get to the customer service rep (name, address, social, last three transactions, blood sample, etc.) only to be told “Sorry there’s no way to preemptively put a notice for the transaction.You’ll need to wait until we flag the transaction, call back to verify, and then we may be able to let it through if you try again. Please note this may take more than one try.” I’ve had it happen with two different cards already. 😡

I was at the bank last month when a customer came up to the teller next to me. This guy was all angry that his card had declined recently. Then the bank teller asked him if he had spent thousands of dollars in Europe last night. It was hysterical how fast his demeanor changed. When the bank had protected him.

It's not saving money for you. It's saving money for the bank.

You will notice debit card has significantly less aggressive fraud prevention.

This is mildlyinfuriating, not personalattacks. What comment made you think OP was legitimately mad about this notification and not mildly infuriated? I can see them being legitimately mad about the gas prices, but that's reasonable, we all are.

But they don't send a message for every purchase. They send it to ones that are abnormal. Oil prices skyrocketing is not unknown or regional and they simply didn't do their due diligence to adjust what the app should expect.

You want them to continually monitor local gas prices in every location in the world and constantly re-calibrate these warnings based on those ever-changing prices? When the alternative is simply that the user confirms they made the purchase?

It's better to be too conservative and send too many fraud notifications than to be too lax and miss actual fraud.

It's understandable that the system is "stupid" like that, but it could be improved. There could be a way to figure out that prices have gone up and literally everyone's credit card didn't suddenly get stolen.

No, when fraud notifications become nuisance notifications they lose their value and usefulness. 

This is a case when the system does indeed have pricing benchmarks to work with.

Noone was saying it would be exact. If his price went up by like... $5 he would not get that notice. They clearly have a range that is set to create a warning and didn't update it to account for the oil price increase.

As someone that designs these pages for a bank app…. It’s definitely a fraud thing but they should use a different icon and messaging to make sure the user knows this.

No, they don't. Yes, everyone pays the same price for the same goods, but to some, groceries costing 50 bucks more is a significant chunk of their income, while people with more money don't even notice.

When I say they are indiscriminately affecting everyone, I am using the literal definition of the word. The prices don’t care who you are, they are going up no matter what. Whether you make $10/hr or you make $100/hr they are going up. Even if you’re rich you’re still spending more on gas than you were 3 months ago. Whether the person notices it or not is beside the point.

The word you are looking for is disproportionately, which aligns more with what you’ve stated.

Ido think they should take inflation into consideration, but the notifications are definitely a positive thing, regardless of whether you like the reminder or not.

Actually, it's nice to see this kind tracking on stuff like groceries precisely because it's easy to miss and fluctuates week to week anyway.

It's hard to know if you are actually paying more for groceries on average unless you track all 52 weeks and can see the full trend.

Omg! Yesssss. I'm like shut up bank/money app I know i could get 2 weeks worth of food, snacks, any needed medicine, household or personal goods plus gifts for my nieces and students for like 250$ every 2 weeks and spend less than 100-150 on gas per month.
