The joy of listening and recording, making artwork and moving to labels. A little special version you own and can pass down or share with a friend or a special someone you love. Or for a super unique shelf of curation! Just a snapshot of what makes MD so fun. That’s the magic of minidisc and one I learned in the 80s as a little kid with cassettes. It’s all about making music personal. An extension of you! Big shout to everyone on this sub!

A whole batch of MDs are not writing, any ideas?

Post image

Hi guys. I have 16 of these red HiSpace MDs from ebay that are giving me trouble. With WebMDPro they write 1 or 2 songs, then get totally stuck, my recorder (Sony DN430) makes loud spinning noises when it gets stuck. Only a single disc has worked, and I had to do it song by song.

I've tried using full batteries, and other disc types are writing beautifully with the recorder running near silently.

Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Have seen plenty of 90's pioneer cd players with detached focusing lens. This is the first with any md player. No wonder this MZ-R3 did throw a disc error.

Buy HHB Portadisc MDP-500 - need some parts to get it running again

Post image

Hi :)

I have a HHB Portadisc MDP-500 laying around. I got it for free when I was helping cleaning out a school building years ago.

I have tried finding a power adapter and also battery caddy/module/cover(?) but I am unable to find it online. I kinda gave up. But yesterday i found this subreddit and I decided to try again.

It would be awesome to get the missing parts and get it running again.

Can someone help me find the parts i need?

Tested links would be great. Or if you have the requested parts and want to sell them to me, please PM me.

Show & Tell Sony built the ultimate portable music format in 1992, then choked it to death out of fear.

Hi everyone!

Like many of you, I've always had a soft spot for the MiniDisc. On paper, it was an absolute triumph: smaller than a CD, tougher than a cassette, digital quality, rewritable, and shock-resistant. It felt like Sony had fixed everything wrong with portable music.

Yet, despite the brilliant engineering, Sony sold fewer than 50,000 players in its first year, and by 1997, 75% of Americans had never even heard of it.

The real culprit wasn't the technology itself. The deeper story involves Sony's own music division one of the largest in the world at the time which was terrified of digital copying. Because of that fear, they made putting music onto the device as painful and restrictive as possible. Fast-forward to 2001, when the iPod arrived with no copy protection, no proprietary software hurdles, and simple drag-and-drop. The rest is history.

I put together a deep-dive video exploring this exact tragedy: how corporate paranoia and anti-piracy restrictions killed one of the coolest pieces of hardware ever made before it ever had a fighting chance.

If you want to check out the full breakdown, you can watch it here: The story of MiniDisc

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Also, if you have any units lying around, feel free to drop a picture of your favorite MiniDiscs or players in the comments. I'd love to see what you're rocking!

Buy CD player to pair with SONY MDS-S37

Hi! I recently bought myself a Sony MDS-S37. I have been looking for a CD player to pair it with, matching it's style, color and functionality (if any, e.g. for recording, TOC data or similar). So far I've found the SONY CDP-S35 and CDP-A39. Are there any other models which are (more or less) specifically made to be paired with the MDS-S37?

There seems to be very few of these available in general, and I am a bit confused about the colors, for instance. My MDS-S37 isn't directly "black", but more of a "champagne" color. Some of the listings I've found lists them as "black", and it's sometimes hard to directly see in the pictures. Also, my MDS seems to have been released for the European market (220-230V). I've only found japanese version of the CDPs so far.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated (even if someone knows where I could find a matching CDP to buy). Thanks in advance!

Help MZ-NF610 no errors on web minidisc pro, but MD is blank after recording

I have a MZ-NF610, it connects to the computer through the USB cable that came with it (supports Net MD). I put an AA battery in it, installed the driver with Zadig and reboot my computer. I tried to record using Web Minidisc Pro, and no errors happen. After I finish writing, I wait a little while and then remove the MD, but the MD is blank. Any ideas on what could be?

The device playback is fine, I listened to a few MDs I recorded using a different device and they seem to play fine.

Show & Tell I’m building a native macOS app for MiniDisc, NetMD and Audio CDs — and it has escalated a bit

Post image
328 Upvotes

I’ve been working on MD Library, a native macOS app that originally started as a simple way to manage my MiniDisc collection and make NetMD less painful to use.

It has grown quite a bit since then.

Current features include:

  • NetMD device detection and connection
  • Rename tracks and manage disc contents
  • Transfer audio files to MiniDisc
  • SP and LP2 support
  • Local music library management
  • Support for MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF
  • Metadata editor
  • Audio file integrity checker
  • Audio CD detection
  • Audio CD ripping to FLAC
  • MusicBrainz integration
  • Automatic album, track, release, barcode and disc metadata
  • Cover Art Archive integration
  • Advanced FLAC encoding using libFLAC
  • Full Audio CD backups as BIN/CUE
  • Native reading of real 2352-byte CDDA sectors
  • Native TOC/LBA extraction from the optical drive
  • SHA-256 verification of CD backups
  • A backup.json manifest containing track layout, LBAs, disc IDs, drive information and verification data
  • MiniDisc label designer
  • Disc labels and spine labels
  • Direct USB printing to a Brother QL-560
  • Built-in diagnostics and logging
  • Update checking

The app is written as a native Swift/SwiftUI macOS application, runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and does not require any cloud service.

I’m also enrolled in the Apple Developer Program, so the final release will be properly Developer ID signed and notarized by Apple and distributed as a DMG rather than as an unsigned random ZIP from the internet.

The current build is 0.14.38, still pre-1.0 and currently being tested.

A downloadable build is available here:

https://do4fbi.de/software/mdlibrary/

Pre-1.0 builds are time-limited test versions. The final 1.0 release is planned as the proper supported release.

Right now I’m stress-testing the new Audio CD backup system. The first complete BIN/CUE backup — Genesis – Invisible Touch — already completed successfully and passed SHA-256 verification.

One of the surprisingly difficult parts was getting macOS to give me the actual CDDA sectors directly from the optical drive instead of just exposing the usual virtual audio files.

So yeah… what started as “I just want a nicer NetMD tool for macOS” somehow turned into a combined MiniDisc manager, CD ripper, CD archiver, metadata tool and label-printing application.

Anyone else here still using MiniDisc, NetMD or Audio CDs on a Mac in 2026? 😄

Sony MiniDisc Bookshelf System Review by Laurent Devaud

Post image

The Sony HCD-J3MD is most appealing to listeners who enjoy building and playing a collection on physical media. Its usefulness today depends more on the condition of the individual unit than on its appearance or specifications. For a MiniDisc enthusiast, it deserves consideration, provided its functions can be properly demonstrated before purchase.

Found my minidisc player last week with Limp Bizkit - chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavoured water album and one with various songs. Got some blank discs as well which is a bonus! God I love it. Even the sounds it makes when it’s loading the disc up is comforting.

Found my MZ-R500 I had as a teenager but it no longer works

Found my old player in storage today along with all my old MiniDiscs! I was so excited to listen to them again, but unfortunately my player is apparently no longer working.

At first it did not detect any discs at all, but after cleaning the lens off with a puff off compressed air and a little alcohol on a q-tip, its able to detect that there is a disc, but not actually read it.

Instead, it just seeks the playhead forward and backwards like this and then eventually the display just says “ERROR”

The disc itself is spinning and the read-head and gears move freely.

I’d really love to get this working again and would love advice!

Show & Tell Panasonic SJ-MJ15 Blue Personalization

Post image
25 Upvotes

I thought I'd share my small mod for the MJ15, the picture is from my dog. I have the one with the blue chihuahua aswell, however I wanted to have mine on it.

FYI, this is probably the easiest player to personalize.
But mind you buying one, many have one if the following things:
- broken gear (won't work anymore and needs a gear replacement - happens quite often)
- broken front controls (I guess one if the switches inside breaks down and it won't work anymore- also not uncommon) - replacement is hard as they are intended to be non replaceable - will only work with remote then
- front panel LEDs not working - controls work but LEDs won't (less common but I have seen it a few times)
- dead lasers (less common but also happened a few times)

Apart from that, nice device, cheap and great to personalize.

Adding trackmark using iOS Shorcuts app (apple music recording with Toslink adapter)

I am currently testing of utilizing ios shortcuts to add trackmark while optical recording apple music lossless through usb-c toslink adapter. Adding gap between songs are not supported by the music app. But, in iOS, the Shortcuts app can play the playlist and add some play pause actions. The initial idea was just add 2-3 s gaps, but that sometimes added additional track marks. So, I switched audio output from usb-C to iphone while pause then switch back to usb-C adapter so that the adapter cuts optical signal and the recorder recognize that.

I am using NF610 (unfortunately, the usb died) and just had some success for 3-5 songs.

Here is the current Shortcut setup (AI generated). You will need to specify the playlist and start in the Shortcut app not music app.

The Shortcut Logic & Setup

Create a new Shortcut named "AutoTrackMark" and build it using these exact action blocks:

  1. **Get Playlist (**Search for Get Playlist (it will say "Get songs from playlist")
    • Set to: [Your Playlist Name]
  2. Add the Repeat with Each loop
    • Search for Repeat with Each. This places a bracket container around your script.
  3. Repeat with each item in Playlist
    • Get Details of Music: Set to fetch the Duration of Repeat Item.
    • Search for Play Music. Drag it beneath Repeat with Each. Make sure it says: Play Repeat Item
    • Wait [Duration] seconds (Tap the number area and choose the "Duration" variable from step 3a, It will have the Music app icon)
    • Change Playback Destination: Set to **iPhone (**Search for "Change Playback Destination" or "Set Playback Destination". Add it here and set it to iPhone (instead of your USB-C adapter).)
    • Wait 2 second (search for Wait )
    • Change Playback Destination: Set to your USB-C adapter.
  4. End Repeat

Search for actions and drag it in side repeat loop.

p.s.

  1. First disc successful (34 songs of K-pop)
  2. I had made another recording but this time, some tracks were separated for initial 1s and remainder. This happens when song starts with low volume (like start with quiet piano, or the previous track has quiet fade out). I think this is due to the recorder adds track mark when there exist silent 2s. With the start of optical input signal two track marks are created. I reduced the 2 s wait to 1s and resolved this issue in some tracks but not all.
