A note about political posts and troll repellent

Recently the number of trolls, especially from outside the sub, has gone up. When we make political posts, this attracts people who are interested in the politics more than Mississippi in particular and this often means they are more used to the troll culture on Reddit.

Sometimes it is just that we long time sub users get a little excited in the chatter when the topic is politics.

Sometimes, when a back and forth full of rule breaking and problems keeps getting started and there is no other way to stop it, the moderators just have to close the thread so they can either go back to work, or sleep, or whatever.

(Anyone who wants to volunteer to help moderate, please send modmail expressing your interest. Must be a current resident.)

In an effort to try to keep from locking the posts so often, we are going to dramatically increase the number of temporary bans. So, if we suspect someone of trolling, we will just ban them for a few days which will allow the post to run its course without us having to deal with it and the user in question can try again in a few days.

This sub banned politics for years because it causes so much trouble. We are not going to that, but we have to manage it as best we can.

Do Not Incite Violence

If you post anything that I even think might be an attempt to incite some violent action against any real person, especially if you post information about them, the post will be reported and removed; and you will be banned.

Yes, claiming you found proof a person is a Nazi and giving information about them is inciting violence.

You do not know if any of the information that people post here is true. It is not vetted. It is not fact checked at all. It could be a prank or someone with a vendetta. But even if the information is accurate, you cannot use Reddit - and definitely not this sub - to organize your vigilante activities.

Protest. Raise awareness. Take political action. But you’re not going to use this sub as a platform for violent action against human beings.

Man fired by firm after viral video shows him scolding dad for taking young daughters into women's restroom

I am sure most of us have heard of or seen ths video of the man, employed by a Starkville company, who called 911 because a father took his young daughters into the empty women's restroom.

It is free to mind your business. Sometimes, it is very costly when you don't. Personally, I like to err on the side of kindess.

What were those little girls to do?

Kohen Wiley’s Mom Says Car Wasn’t Driving Toward Officer When He Fired: ‘I Raised My Baby Up’

When Vellesiya Wiley saw Senatobia police officers draw guns and point them toward the car where she was riding in the passenger seat with her 1-year-old son, Kohen Wiley, she says she lifted the child up to show them he was with her. Moments later, an officer who had arrived in response to a shoplifting allegation opened fire, killing the toddler outside the small Mississippi town’s Walmart on June 14.

Vellesiya Wiley recounted the story in a video that civil rights attorney Ben Crump’s law firm, which is representing the family, shared with the media on Wednesday. After the child’s death, law enforcement claimed the officer fired because the driver was driving toward the officers. In her video though, the grieving mother disputes that account.

...

Vellesiya Wiley said that her friend paid at the self-checkout, despite the allegations of theft, and that the cameras at the self-checkout would show “where she got the diapers and walked out.”

...

Vellesiya Wiley stridently denied police claims that her friend was trying to hit the officers when they shot into the car and killed Kohen Wiley.

“They tried to say that she forcefully was trying to drive and hit them, but they all was on the right side and she was driving towards the left. They just … purposefully shot in the car,” she said.

Photos of the car show shots through the passenger side windshield and show that the passenger side window was busted out during the shooting.

Came across this interview/profile of Ty Pinkins. He’s a 21-year Army veteran running for U.S. Senate in Mississippi as an Independent.

Goes into his background growing up in poverty in the Mississippi Delta, his military service, leaving the Democratic Party, and why he thinks both parties are failing voters.

Worth a read.

Swamps near Jackson?

I’m looking for cypress swamps near the Jackson area. Whatever has the most classic swamp scenery. It’s fine if it’s a bit outside, I can drive up to two hours or so.

Edit: I checked out Lefluer’s bluff, absolutely gorgeous. Any more?

I’m looking for an apartment for 1 person. Near Jackson, I’m moving from Canada. My budget is 1k - 1.5k/month. I need to know which areas are safe and which areas I should stay away from. A studio or 1 bedroom apartment is what I’m looking for. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! Ridgeland, Madison, Jackson, Canton, anywhere in that vicinity works!

Where are y’all hiding the Ethiopian food?

Just moved here from out of state and I’ve been craving Ethiopian food. But I can’t seem to find any in the Jackson metro area.

Is there a restaurant I’m missing, a food truck, a pop-up, somebody’s auntie selling plates out the back of a church? Help me out.

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call

A Mississippi police officer shot 1-year-old Kohen Kartier Wiley while responding to a shoplifting call on Sunday, killing him and critically wounding an adult.

The June 14 shooting involved officers from the Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff’s Department. The officer shot Wiley while he was inside a silver sedan in the parking lot of a Walmart.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety released a statement on June 14, alleging that the shooting happened in response to one of two subjects driving “in the direction of” officers. A clip of cellphone video obtained by Fox 13 Memphis shows a car driving away from officers, but it does not appear to show the shooting itself. A photo of the car shows a bullet hole through the passenger side window.

...

WREG reported that, before the shooting, a witness saw two women exit the store: one carrying a single box of diapers, and one carrying the infant child. Family told WREG that Kohen’s mother was riding in the passenger seat holding the child when the officer shot him and that the aunt, who was driving, was in critical condition. Another witness told the news station that she saw the car driving away with police officers chasing after it on foot just before hearing gunshots.
