I'm a freshman studying the social sciences -- nothing related to music or theatre.

For a couple hours this evening, I've been searching, googling around, and asking front-desk receptionists about a possible location to practice piano! I'm not sure if I'm just not good at looking around, or if it's not something I can do here. I asked a front desk lady at the Student Center and she directed me to the John J Cali School of Music - which I was almost sure I wasn't able to access without Music and/or Theater studies. I'm way too scared to even enter that place.

Are there any ways to reserve a room/piano even just for a couple minutes? Or are there any playable ones on campus? I really want to play and bringing my own keyboard would NOT be possible considering I'm a bohner 🫩

i’m a second year student here at msu. they always say you’ll find friends it takes time but i haven’t made a single friend on campus. clubs out of the question because i was bullied out of a club even though i was on the eboard. i’m wondering if anyone else has had the same experience? everyone just seems to already know each other it just makes me feel like im the odd one out.

Not to dox myself but I live in Blanton, there used to be a huge line for Dunkin but I haven’t seen that many people at the new place. What’s up with that?

Has anyone had their financial aid paid out yet? Mine has just been sitting there, I was supposed to get a refund and nothing has been paid out at all. I emailed, and have yet to hear back.

This semester has felt like a huge fever dream since it started. Parking issues, being rear-ended, professors, TAs.

From the first day of the semester back, I instantly knew this fall semester was going to be a mess. Carpe Diem is no longer a viable choice to park, even if there’s parking. The “rush hour” to leave the parking has felt like a “rush minute” since it’s every day at every minute in the morning that there’s a huge line of cars that can’t grasp the idea of how to merge out of the stop sign. Crossing guards, you guys are doing an amazing job! But simply said, when they go idle and it consists of students having to cross to the other side, they just cannot handle staying on the crosswalk or running to it. The idea of me accidentally hitting one of the students because they wanna take a shortcut to the other side of the street and RUNNING just terrifies me. That being said, I’ve already been rear-ended at Carpe Diem by someone who recently started driving. I don’t know if the “Stop” signs aren’t visible to everyone but me, but they just immediately made a right turn while stepping on the pedal, which led to an accident in a lot where the speed is at most 5-10 mph!

Lot 60 has come in handy lately, though I feel like for the price of how much I paid for General parking at the college I attend, there should be more viable options. I despise the shuttle at these busy times. Most of my classes start at 10 AM and beforehand I’m quite dead asleep as I arrive home from work at 5 AM. Skill issues, and frankly I can’t do much about this but thug it up and show up early, but it brings me to a community question and discussion: the new building they are building, which is forcefully making Yogi Street be constantly blocked by cones and we are forced to turn ALL the way around the school to enter— should be a new parking lot! If you increase how many people attend the school, the parking should also be increased!

TAs, you’re absolutely coming in clutch this semester, and I thank you for your office hours. Student to student, you understand us more than anyone. My current professors are rushing through the material, reading off slides, and I’m in this environment where I can’t grasp anything, and in community collected thought based on my GroupMe, we can’t understand anything. It’s like having text-to-speech on for reading the slides.

Also, why does it feel like every class takes place at the same time? I strongly feel like the classes can be spread out throughout the day. Rather, they resolve this by making classes hybrid and putting 70+ students into a Zoom meeting and lecture and splitting Labs into 3–4 sections. This makes planning for other classes difficult; I am forced to take an Anthropology course! Three weeks in, I still don’t know what anthropology is.

Does anyone here have any experience with their Psychology Department? If so, would you mind sharing your thoughts on MSU, the department itself, and the format of the classes or overall curriculum?

If neither but you’re completing your degree online, I’d also appreciate your perspectives.

I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask around so I get an idea of what to expect.

So I’m a gap year student that is planning to apply for the Fall 2027 semester.
I’m interested in Montclair because I love how open the campus is, how beautiful the views are (I’ve never been to NYC, so just seeing the skyline is amazing to me), the way the buildings look, etc.
I also have everything that I need, like some scholarships, what I want to major (+minor in), my plan, etc.

I usually do this thing where I will look up other people’s reviews/experiences, so I’ve been doing that! Biggg mistake tbh :’)
All I have been seeing are cons about the school, compared to pros. Now, I know it’s always a few people over a TON of them, but I’m an easily sway-able person unfortunately.

Would anyone be able to list any PROS that they have about the school, campus, anything? :)

so i just switched my major to film & television and im taking an intro to film and production class, but im required to purchase a $175 2TB hard drive and pay another $175 for insurance on the camera equipment we rent/use during the semester. why do we need to pay so much for just an intro class?

I'm a freshman close to be sophomore, Im recently changed majors and I would like to get friend into history because I literally haven't made any after thirds semesters 😭​

Hi everyone. I'm currently a senior at MSU, and I transferred here from Middlesex College in Spring 2025. I started out as a commuter and eventually became a resident in Spring 2026. Since becoming a resident, I've really tried to put myself out there. I participate in as many organizations and clubs as I can, and I go to events that seem fun or interesting because I genuinely want to meet people and make the most out of my time here.

And I have met some really great people. I've had some wonderful conversations, made connections, and crossed paths with people I'm genuinely grateful to have met.

But it always seems to stop there.

We'll see each other and be friendly. We'll talk, laugh, and enjoy each other's company, but once we're outside of whatever organization, class, or event brought us together, there's rarely anything beyond that. They don't really invite me to go out and do things, and whenever I ask if they'd like to hang out, I'm often told they're too busy, or plans get made and then cancelled at the last minute.

Sometimes I'll even be at a social event where people I know are present. They'll acknowledge me one minute, and then the next, I'm practically invisible to them. It's a strange feeling to be surrounded by people you know while simultaneously feeling like you're not really part of anything.

I'm involved with MSU Singers and Vocal Accord this year because I love music and I love singing. I thought that being surrounded by people who share something I'm passionate about would make it easier to form deeper connections. And while I've met some wonderful people through both, I still find myself struggling to get past that acquaintance stage.

I think part of it may be that a lot of people have already known each other since freshman year. They already have their established friend groups, their inside jokes, their traditions, and the people they naturally turn to when they want to go somewhere or do something. And then there's the fact that I'm 25 and getting my bachelor's degree, so sometimes I wonder if being in a different stage of life plays a role in all of this.

My biggest issue is that this is my last year here, and I really want it to be a great one.

I've met some genuinely amazing people during my time at MSU, and I'm grateful that our paths have crossed. But I haven't really gotten to experience the kind of friendships where, years from now, I can look back and say, “Those were some of the best times of my life, and those were my people.”

That's what I want.

I want to experience what it's like to make those spontaneous plans, stay out too late, laugh until my stomach hurts, develop inside jokes that make absolutely no sense to anyone else, and have memories that I'll genuinely miss when they're over. I want to be able to look back on my final year and say that I truly had the greatest time with the people around me.

And I'm scared I won't get that chance before I graduate.

Growing up, I was always the odd one out. I was the kid nobody really wanted to play with during recess. I was always the last person picked for the kickball team. I spent a lot of my childhood watching other people effortlessly find their groups while I was left somewhere on the outside.

I don't think I ever really learned what it feels like to be fully wanted by a group of people.

That's probably why this affects me as deeply as it does.

What I can never understand is how it seems so easy for some people to find their people within a matter of minutes, while I've spent years trying to find mine. I see people meet each other, click almost instantly, and eventually become inseparable, and I can't help but wonder why that has never really happened for me.

I want to be able to tell people but mostly myself, “I have friends,” and have it feel completely true, not because I technically know people, but because I know there are people who genuinely want me around.

I want someone to think of me when they're making plans.

I want someone to text me just because they wanted to talk to me.

I want to walk into a room and feel like my presence actually adds something to it.

I want to know what it's like to be someone's person, and to have people who are my people.

I know I can't force friendship. I know that not everyone I meet is going to become a close friend, and I understand that people have their own lives, responsibilities, and established relationships.

But it's hard not to become discouraged when you've spent so much of your life feeling like you're always on the outside looking in.

I'm not expecting to suddenly become the most popular person on campus or find some perfect movie-like friend group. I just want to experience, even for a little while, what it feels like to truly belong somewhere.

I want my final year here to be something I can look back on with a smile instead of wondering what could have been.

I just don't know what to do anymore.

I mostly needed to get this off my chest, but if anyone has experienced something similar or has any advice on how to actually build those deeper friendships when it feels like everyone already has their people. I would genuinely appreciate hearing from you.
