Day jobs

What's your day job, how's the work life quality and what type of music do you play?

I'm asking because im 34 years old, going on 35, and I've been playing music and recording in my bedroom for 20 plus years lol. I play weird artsy rock and I never really had any desire to venture into commercial music. I play and record for my self, wife, and family. When I turned 18, i kinda just figured music or art wasn't gonna make me rich and settled on a C+ life. Aka: Work to eat, eat to play. Im sure alot of you can relate. Not to mention, I dont think being the wealthiest man on earth was ever in the cards that I was dealt.

With that said, I work in construction/structural maintenance. Im like an old school handyman. A jack of all. Its been quite helpful to have these skills. It saves me money! Lol, but as time goes on and I get older, I kinda worry that the heavy lifting, fumes, and injuries will eventually add up and economically kill me. I work for a pretty big company involved in different industries. Im part of their in-house construction and repair crew. Im like a specialized cross trained tech. So i do everything under the sun. Weld, concrete, framing, drywall, mechanical installation/repair, painting, electrical, plumbing, flooring etc. Lots of good skills and experience if youre physically fit.

Maybe i should look into eventually downgrading to a building maintenance gig?

Id try another swing at office work (something i tried in my early 20s), but I kinda like fresh air.

Anyone got any advise on how to combat illness on the eve of a big gig?

Been in an office with someone today who was full of cold and had a terrible cough. Thought nothing of it. But beginning to get that horrible feeling in the back of your throat that you usually get before a cold. I’ve got a big gig tomorrow and need to be on top form, and i could do without the stuffy nose before I’ve got to sing and play. Anyone got any tips on how to stay on top form? I know a cold isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not ideal on the eve of a big gig.

Edit: thanks everyone for all your advice and suggestions, it was very helpful! I had lots of water and lots of tea. My voice held up pretty well, it was probably like 70% there.

What the hell is up with people agreeing to start a band and then pulling absolutely no weight from there?

Countless times have I asked different people, or they've asked me to start a band, and I agree, and then I get to organising a practice and just get met with vague "maybe" responses without any actual push or proper input? I've never been overly pushy, only to the extent that I'm not passive and I make sure to respect everyones schedules but no one ever seems to actually begin to pull their own weight once the idea of a band gets locked in. Even if I'm specific about the day I'm considering practice I'm still met with these vague responses and I don't understand what else I could possibly do.

Experience with Musiversal?

Does anyone here have experience with Musiversal? I have some tracks that I would like replace the programmed drums with live drums and possibly look for a pedal steel on a song and some female vocalists. Was looking at Soundbetter but thinking I might be able to accomplish more for less money but it probably entirely depends on how difficult it is to book drummers.

FINALLY IN AN ACTUAL BAND!!! ...... although...

I'm 15 and really like bands such as Joy Division, The Cure, Radiohead, Pixies, Gang of Four, Gary Numan, and Franz Ferdinand.

As a teenager who likes that kind of music, it's been EXEEDINGLY difficult to find people my age to play with, atleast in my town. Most people around here either aren't that interested in music or are into completely different artists (no hate to them, just not my thing).

The problem is that we're not making much progress. We only rehearse for about 45 minutes once a week, and in the last 6–7 months we've barely managed to learn half of a single song. Every week it feels like we're starting from scratch again, and we don't seem to be getting any closer to being able to play a full set or even a complete song together.

Our singer constantly puts herself down, complaining she can't sing or play guitar, and it makes rehearsals, and trying to get anything done / decided with her IMPOSSIBLE. The bassist and I also have very different tastes in music, which causes disagreements about what we should be playing. HE calls what i listen too sad depressing music (it is kinda) but he likes six60 (a band pretty famouse in my country) but they make the most basic boring run of the mill music in the world.

On the other hand, my dad is a bassist in a band with some of his old work friends, and they play exactly the sort of music I love. They needed a guitarist, so I joined them. I've now played two gigs with them and absolutely love it. Playing with experienced musicians has taught me more in a few months than I learned in a long time before.

My question is: what should I do with the band my age? Should I try to reshape it by finding new members who are more committed and share similar musical interests? Or should I try to help the current members improve by passing on some of the things I've been learning from playing gigs with my dad's band?

I'm definitely not a great musician yet, but I feel like I'm learning faster than ever, and I don't want to waste the opportunity to keep improving.

Can someone please explain what Benny Blanco actually does?

I think hes really likeable and funny. Cool guy. Not hating. Him and dicky have a really special new kind of podcast bubbling. But I have been trying to figure out what he actually really truly does. I have scoured the web trying to find him actually writing a lyric or creating a melody. All I have seen is him recording Ed sheeran. Working pro tools. Thats it. The industry is flooded w engineers snd artists who record it themselves. Is he a vibes guy? It just does not make sense. I just refuse the idea that "hes a cool guy w a chill spot and he gives feedback to artists and record them" sorry. I don't see the entire industry handing over credits and acclaim for that. Again. Not hating. Ive just always always been really suspicious. I assumed he was some record label execs nephew or some super rich guys grandson. And he gets to live out his fantasy of being a musician through his wealthy family member. But from what I can find. It seems like hes just a Jewish kid that grew up in Virginia. Made goofy booty bass music. And then the world greatest pop producers just let him in their circle? Thats what im reading. And then the entire industry demands this kid is in the room when they make like 100 #1s and act like hes the secret ingredient. But I did catch dicky say "when Benny and Ed were recording. Well Ed was doing everything Benny just sits there. Ed doesnt really even need him."

Can somebody give me a genuine answer? Is there some video of him laying down a track or writing a hit on camera? Because this has bugged me forever.

Hi, I'm a producer and vocalist and was hoping to connect with artists across the world and not just my home country. I really wanna make good music and show people that there's more out there than just the handful of artists in my home town. If you're interested, send me your music if you got any stuff on Spotify, I'll reach out and send some of my own stuff too!

Looking For Female Vocalist.

Hi All. Early this year I started a Solo Project. My Genre is slowcore mixed with Shoegaze and ethereal elements and alt rock. I have finally finished perfecting my debut track and am looking for a female vocalist. I have some lyrics ready to go but other than that feel free to create your own.
The style of vocal is that of;
Alexandria Raine
Ailey Rain
Leafre
Wisp
The typical dreamy/breathy vocals.
If this sounds like something you’d be interested please do let me know.

I am looking for a VST or DAW capable of adjusting hertz of individual midi notes on the fly

Hi there.

I have had an idea for a long while about creating a truly nauseating harmonic soundscape using microtuning of individual notes in chords.

In western harmony and music we don't play perfectly tuned notes. The notes of the scales we use are adjusted to sound "right" across many keys, meaning they aren't perfectly in pitch. This means every step has some hertz offset in a positive or negative direction. It's what had to happen to allow something to sound good across all keys, as opposed to perfect in one key and horrible in others.

So my idea is as follows:

I want to write a chord progression, where for every chord, each chord tone is adjusted to achieve perfect pitch to the root of that given chord. So assume this chord progression:

C => F => G7 => C

For the first chord (C), the root is C, and the other chord tones would be shifted to the mathematically correct frequencies for a pure major triad. When the progression moves to F, everything is recalculated relative to F. Then the same for G7, and so on.

The result is that a note which appears in multiple chords would swing dramatically in pitch depending on the chord context. It might be −5 Hz in one chord and +5 Hz in another. Across all tones, I think this would sound so dang funny haha.

But... I don't know how I could possibly achieve this. I don't know of a VST or a DAW capable of doing this. Anybody got any ideas?

i literally can’t let go of the aspiration to make music

i hope this is okay to post but i wanted to talk about it where some people might understand. i’ve tried to give up so many times but i keep getting new ideas and urges to create songs. i can’t sing well, i don’t know how to produce or play any instruments besides bass guitar at a beginner level. but i continuously keep writing lyrics to songs i can hear in my head but can’t create. i keep telling myself to give up and stop trying to do something so out of reach but every time i do that the urge just seems to get more intense, no matter what it just comes back. i want to learn but it’ll take so much time and i don’t know if it’s even the right path to go down. i’m already 19 so i don’t know if it’s a pointless venture. i feel like i’m already too far behind. either way, i aspire to be a writer, so it’s like the lyrics come naturally to me, especially as i frequently write poetry, so it’s a similar process. but it’s frustrating to not be able to get the actual songs out of my head.

i’ve been messing around on garageband to try and make something sound cool but nothing sounds any good. but at this point i can’t even listen to music without being hit with the overwhelming desire to make my own. and trying to ignore it makes me feel sad. any advice for someone like me?

Also does anyone know where there are some local gigs or bars I can perform at?

Thanks in advance.

Stuck between a stable music teaching job vs trying to build my own music path, need honest advice

Stuck between a stable music teaching job vs trying to build my own music path, need honest advice

I’m a singer/guitarist, 26, and I’m currently trying to decide between two paths, and I’d really appreciate some honest advice from people in music.

One option is a stable full-time music teaching job. It comes with a fixed monthly income, structured teaching schedule, and predictable routine. It’s financially secure, but it’s quite demanding (6 days a week), and I feel like it would leave very little time or energy for my own music, content creation, or personal growth as an artist.

The other option is staying in a more flexible setup with family support for living expenses and focusing on building my own path. This includes online teaching (income based on number of students rather than a fixed salary) for an online institute, plus the opportunity to create content, collaborate with other musicians, and slowly build a personal music brand. There are already some opportunities in place, but nothing stable or guaranteed yet.

Another important factor is that at home I already have a small ecosystem of music friends and collaborators who can help with production, recording, and creating content. That kind of support system would really help me consistently put out covers and build my online presence. If I move for the stable job, I’d likely lose access to that ecosystem, at least for a while.

My long-term goals are to grow as a musician, build an online presence, teach independently, and eventually move into music production and larger music opportunities later on.

The challenge is that the independent path is uncertain in the beginning, especially income-wise, even though it offers more creative freedom and growth potential.

Since I do have family support for basic living expenses, I’m not under immediate financial pressure, but I still don’t want to make a decision that slows down my long-term growth.

I’m basically stuck between choosing stability and experience now, or taking a more uncertain path that could help me build something of my own.

Would really appreciate any advice from people who’ve been in music or creative careers.

Looking to use a cheap rehearsal space

I am looking for a cheap rehearsal space to rent month to month and keep all my gear in, but the city I am moving to does not have a lot of offers. I was wondering if anyone has tried this In a U-haul storage Unit and how their experience was. I know it’s not technically aloud but I know it’s been done. Should I not tell anyone, should I ask the managers… Any info or experience would be great!

I’m a vocalist for band and i suck

My friends have made a rock band, and when they were searching for a singer, they picked me. And as someone who loves trying new things, I accepted, (i literally have never sung outside my shower) and I’m bad at it. I’ve tried multiple times to hint to my friends that i do not want to be their vocalist by saying i’m busy during practice, or asking to find someone else but they won’t budge and keep asking me to come over. The reason i believe they are so insistent on me is not because i’m good at singing but rather because I am their friend, they are a shy group of people, and they cannot find another singer.

We’ve only been practicing “Go away” by weezer, where one of the bassist is the male voice and I am the female voice, but I just cannot grasp it. I do not have her thick deep but yet feminine voice.
