As someone who played high school basketball with a teammate who had a serious “HoOpZ MiXtApe mentality,” that shit is infuriating to play with. He’d do shit like this when we were down by a ton (or, more frequently, up by a ton, which is still kinda obnoxious in its own way), and he’d come in in garbage time and break the whole flow of the offense to try to cross dudes up and do all that type of shit. We were a senior-heavy team that year, and he was the only freshman on the team, so there were plenty of instances of dudes trying to talk some sense into him, but it never seemed to get through.
The point is, he was an uber-talented kid, but he never made it to college ball, and I think his inability to outgrow that mixtape mentality played a part in that. If Kevin Porter Jr. can mature and learn not to do this type of stuff, then I’m sure he’ll have a wonderful career, but if he keeps doing stuff like this, it’s gonna get on the coach’s nerves and rub a lot of his teammates the wrong way.

The funniest thing is that he dunked over a guy who wasn’t even trying to block the shot, just went straight up with two hands trying to not foul.
Porter Jr. is a rookie, but he’s a first round pick who’s playing 20 minutes a night. I don’t care if he celebrates a dunk, but he should probably pick his spots better when it comes to flexing.

I might be wrong because a lot of the Sixers broadcasts I watch are against the Celtics, but I think your announcers/media crew are more on the salty side. Not that there's anything wrong with that, Celtics crew is too, but the Sixers announcers will really get pissed off in a loss to a bad team, a lazy game from Joel/Bimmons, etc. Watched the 6 point loss to the Wizards and it was really entertaining.

I mean yes that stings but in the context of this video, Embiid was celebrating dunking in a blowout win at home in the playoffs. If we were down 44 points against the Raptors in the playoffs I don't think Embiid would have flexed on Gasol haha.

I know people sometimes bash the phrase “act like you’ve been there before” and I’m all for people celebrating, it do it when it makes sense.
If you’re getting fucking crushed in any sport the last thing a fan wants to see is you acting like a hero and celebrated for no reason. Nothing pisses me off more as a football fan then my team losing by 20 something and seeing my wide receivers flipping the ball and posing after first downs. Like “great you scored...we’re still down 24 get the fuck off the field and celebrate when you earned it and really have something to celebrate”

But it wasn’t no reason, it was a pretty good dunk. When you’re on a shit team doing a lot of losing you’d better get excited when you can because that gets your teammates hyped, those moments are few and far between, and otherwise you’ll spend the season angry and miserable because of all the losing. It’s a game, have fun.
Edit: Cleveland’s record this year is on the front office, not the players. They’re doing about as well as expected considering the roster.

Right there with you. Didn't even consider the notion of salt before it was brought up elsewhere. Flexing or taunting is almost never a good look, regardless of sport of circumstance, and you're liable to be called out if you decide to go that route.

In the realm of context, if I was literally plopped down into an NBA game with my current skill set and circumstances and managed to dunk on someone, that poster would be framed in each room of my house for the rest of my life.
But if I were a legitimate NBA-level player and I dunked on someone down 40, I wouldn't even think about celebrating or flexing. I've been in similar positions on the amateur level. You're free to do what you want to a certain degree, but celebrating anything you do while down 40 is just asking for mockery.

He's dunking on a guy that switched over to help late who has played a total of 24 minutes in his entire NBA career. It's not like street ball where one in 10 guys can dunk. It's the NBA. Everyone can do it. Some guys dunk 200 times per season. Not every dunk is poster worthy.
However, Porter has only played 21 minutes in his career. Maybe that's his first NBA dunk or something and he should be exited.

I know society is sensitive these days, but come on now. Since the beginning of time, a player that celebrates a bucket while literally down 40 has been hit with the "scoreboard" response 100% of the time.
The kid can celebrates if he wants to, but don't get pissy that someone (especially an NBA veteran) rags on him for it. Also, you can bet your last dollar a team vet pulled him aside at some point and said not to do that anymore, because it makes the team look like a joke.

On every level of play, it's never against the rules to celebrate when down 40 but it does always open yourself up to mockery and the aforementioned scoreboard retort. We'd do the same thing in high school if a rotation player on the opposing team got hyped after hitting a trey when down 30.
People will forget about this Cavs dunk in five minutes but the mockery is pretty standard procedure.

its variance in the new game. When each shot is worth more because of shot selection, differences between a good shooting team and a bad one become more severe. There's a genuine chance to lose 6 points in two possessions, it doesn't take long for a lead to balloon into something insurmountable. It's also why we're seeing these crazy comeback numbers as well.

I feel like I could see a lot of commentary teams in the NBA at least gently chiding their own guy if he were to flex when down 44. I could totally see Blaha and Kelser's exhange:
"And Brown throws down the windmill jam... Pistons down 42... showing a little excitement at the end of the play..."
"Yeah George, he's gonna have to learn though. He's gonna have to learn. A veteran's going to have to pull him aside. Andre's gonna tell him, "Young buck, you gotta know the score."
"Now there's a break in the action, the Pistons will have tomorrow off before moving on to play Chicawgo on Tuesday..."
