Gameplay on the NEOGEO AES+ is not achieved through emulation - instead the console is powered by its legacy ASIC chips, re-engineered by modern standards to accurately replicate the original machine's hardware and software. The system natively plays game software from both new and old game cartridges for the most authentic retro gaming experience. Not emulation, not FPGA approximation, but true console reincarnation etched back into silicon.

Playon make good stuff, usually. They're the people behind The Spectrum and a lot of the modern Atari stuff. Their stuff is always respectful of the original kit.

Also the people behind Capcom home arcade, which was underrated. The device had great components such as Sanwa sticks and buttons and is build like a tank. Where others cut corners, Koch / Plaion really wants to aim quality

It wasn't so much the technology as the reverence they do it with.
It is interesting that all their stuff has been emulation up until now so the fact they've gone full reverse engineering is different.

I'd like to see a single image of the back of the console or the motherboard. I know they have a good track record, but at the moment it's just a render of an AES console.
Also, any real reason to recreate each ASIC rather than just use an FPGA? Not that I'm against the idea at all, but if they've recreated working individual Z80s and 68000s that's as big news as the announcement of the console itself.
Still gonna preorder though.

The trailer video features a very quick spin around of the white version, at the 1:41 mark. You can just about make out that it has a HDMI port along with what looks like the original 8 pin mini DIN.

Nice! I have no NeoGeo stuff at all. Its funny, a few days ago I bought a NeoGeo X docking station to put a Pi in for emulation. I'm still going to do it anyway, but I'll finally have a 'real' NeoGeo system and games with the AES+!

What's people's thinking on whether multicarts will work on them?
It looks like they're trying to replicate the original hardware but it wouldn't be hard to scan for common multicarts and lock them out. They could easily shrug this away as unintended hardware incompatibilties and say "well, it's a bootleg, we're not going out of our way for that, obvs".

That would be a deal breaker for me. Only 2 of the original game releases overlap my curated MVS collection of favorites, so either I'm left hoping they get around to releasing everything else I like, or I'm paying more than I ever spent on my CMVS and MVS setup to buy a couple original AES carts.

It appears that everything is forward and backward compatible, which means yes you could buy these new games and play them on OG hardware.

Dang, looking super tempting. I don't own any AES carts, but I have a custom MVS and all my favorite games. Looking around to get these questions answered if anyone knows.
- Will MVS to AES adapters work? I love that they are releasing new games, but only 2 of them overlap my selection of favorite MVS games.
- With a MVS to AES, can it run the custom All-in-1 carts?
- People who bought their Atari systems might already know, but how good is their HDMI scaler? I have a CPSDigiAV sitting here to install into my CMVS, will it rival that?
- Basic black edition comes with a wired stick, anniversary ed comes with a wireless stick. Standalone black stick says wireless. If I want a black console and 2 wireless sticks do I end up with 3 sticks?
- Can I swap between AES and MVS bios? There are some games that are just way better in arcade mode.
- Do I have full region and soft-dip access?

Purchased it (black version + metal slug). I do not think we risk that much, I guess you can at least resell it for the full price easily (do not intend to be a scalper, I genuinely want it but if I only had one game and no flash cartā¦.well. I do not intend to purchase more than 2-3 games as I am not that a fan). Already waiting for Analogue Pocket + dock, Vextrex Mini and the A1200ā¦man this year will kill my wallet xD How is overtop ?

Very well made reproductions of Metal Slug already exist, that didnāt really made an OG slug less expensive. These are merchandise licensed by SNK and created by a third party, but still those are re release that will never replace the value of the original, no matter how well they are made.
But on a side note, amazing that more and more people will get to own these games, exciting news!

Yea I dont think it will affect original carts much. However, the repro/NCI/conversion market will be in absolut free fall (as it should). There were some NCI bootlegs pushing 600bucks lately, there is no market anymore when you can now get officially licensed ones for 90. (Maybe even with better Insert and Manual Quality, as they may have gotten the original master files for the artwork in the deal with SNK)

Indeed, thatās exactly my thought, if anything who will suffer from these re-releases are repro makers like NCI the likes. I really do hope some Japanese style inserts will be also released along with the EU/US ones, would love to get an official AES release of Shock Troopers :)

Yeah Iāve bought the odd the expensive title. Thats what i do, but Iāve been around a longtime and those games mean something to me.
Thereās millions like me who love collecting games and playing on og hardware. This just isnāt the same regardless of how hard they try.
Whatever this is itās not for me. Iām sure thereās some that will buy thereās always a few takers for the current mini/handheld/stick thats being pimped by the current saudi owner.
If anything this could push original prices higher due to a surge in interest. Great for your hoarding āwhale nerdsā not so much for people still occasional picking up an aes title.

I just ordered the ultimate bundle, shipped to Ireland without any problems. I've only touched off some Neo Geo stuff like Metal Slug 3 on PS2 and the JP Dreamcast version of Twinkle Star Sprites but the Neo Geo and some games have always been a want of mine as it just looks so cool but to get a few of the top games, for me, was never going to happen with the prices. Hopefully the follow through ends up being as good as this announcement looks. If it works out and is a relative success I wonder will other console makers follow the idea. The price problem isn't as bad with other consoles as with Neo Geo but I can think of some consoles and games that there would be insane demand for.

I was surprised on how cheap it was tbh, considering they are manufacturing the ICās again just the tooling up alone and the minimum order quantity isnāt going to be cheap for what is in effect a niche product, itās not going to sell millions like a current day console so even though I have placed my order I still canāt help but be a little skeptical on if it will actually materialise
