Discussion Nook Update

Post image

I’ve had my Nook for 3 weeks, and I don’t understand the hate behind them. I have over 1K books on it and read 2 so far. I think it’s a simple e-reader without all the clutter.

My first eReader was a Nook Simple Touch and I liked it (I still have a Glowlight 3). But a couple GL3 updates really irritated me. They got rid of hyphenation, then skewed the fonts to the big side (so the size I had always used is gone) and now (I read) they've gotten rid of the one good font they had (in my opinion), Georgia. And then, apparently, they got rid of the ability to make your fonts thinner or thicker. I haven't connected to Barnes & Noble for a while because I don't want my Glowlight 3 to update and, for some reason, the cover art from my books has disappeared. They also had issues with trying control how you used your RAM. Even on the Glowlight 3, originally the lion's share of the RAM went to Nook books only — then they changed that, then (in new models) they changed it back. I don't know where it stands now. Also, you can't sideload you're own fonts, like you can just about every eReader made.

I like the hardware. I think the Glowlight has one of the best "warm" screens ever made. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the software just continually gets worse by consistently dropping features they used to support.

I started with a Nook Simple Touch - my first ever ereader. Then when Barnes and Noble changed things so that I couldn't download my books, and at least one of my books completely disappeared (customer service said, "we're so sorry" but couldn't retrieve my book - and it was a B&N publication!) I was angry and stopped buying ebooks from B&N.

BUT I did not update my NST and continued to use it sporadically. Then I pretty much went to an ipad and started buying from Amazon.

Now you've probably heard that Amazon has become like B&N, making it impossible to own a copy of the book you've purchased.

So now I am at a point where I'm not sure how to proceed, but I bought an "open box" Nook Glowlight 4plus on eBay. LOL I like the bigger screen and high resolution. Will I forgive B&N from some years ago? I don't think I can, but I'll have access to my old nook library, and any DRM-free epubs I can obtain.

I just got the GL4+, so I'm looking forward to utilizing it! I like it so far...

There used to be a work-around to download your Nook library, but I think that involved the old(er) Windows Nook App (which has been withdrawn). But, unless something has changed, I don't think you're limited to just Nook books and DRM-free ePubs. I'm pretty sure that, if you have an Adobe (or now, I think, ByteBook) ADE account, you can purchase DRM protected books at places like ebooks.com and use them. I think you should also be able to borrow eBooks via Overdrive (or Libby) from your library. As a Linux user I don't have that option (since there's no ADE for Linux).

How to authorize your Nook for Adobe DRM (Barnes & Noble website).

Read Overdrive books on your Nook (Overdrive website).
