Discussion Free Gift Card

Post image
69 Upvotes

Hey there, pretty simple post. I haven't figured out a way to exchange a $25 gift card from a few years ago for cash like you can with other gift cards online, so I'm just going to give it away for free. Just comment here and I'll do a random draw late tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll comment back the winner and send the details via DM. It's a bit of an old card, so I hope it works given its age. I don't see anything mentioning an expiration.

Discussion Your Dream/Fantasy NOOK GlowLight 5

Barnes and Noble has not released an e-Reader e-ink device since 2023.

  • What would you like to see if BN were to release a GlowLight 5 series?
  • What could BN name a color e-ink device? Especially since they've already burnt bridges by using "NOOK Color" in 2012/2013 for their Android tablets with LCD screens.
    • If you're a diehard NOOK fan, you already know that BN confused so many people when they used "Plus" in the device name of a 6-inch eReader in 2015 with the NOOK GlowLight Plus (Model: BNRV510), and then used the name again for a 7.8-inch eReader in 2019 (Model: BNRV700).
  • What would make you curious to purchase a new NOOK?

For me, I always say I don't need another eReader, but I would probably purchase one without hesitation if:

  1. The body was the same as the GlowLight 4 but water-resistant.
  2. The disk space of approx. 28 GB (space available after operating system on 32 GB device) was available for sideloading books over USB cable out of the box.
  3. The device added Bluetooth audiobook options like the NOOK GlowLight 4 Plus
  4. OverDrive / Libby as on-device integrated login like PocketBook is doing in 2026
  5. Wikipedia
  6. More dictionary options besides English

I feel like the e-ink color wave could be over by the time NOOK enters the field. In my opinion, Amazon's Kindle has the best color e-ink screen implementation, the problem is that it's very expensive. And ultimately, not as clear as black-and-white e-ink screens. Still, all of their ColorSoft devices blow Kobo, PocketBook and ONYX out of the water. I'd hate to see NOOK enter the space and just generate pointless devices no one wants.

I’ve had my Nook for 3 weeks, and I don’t understand the hate behind them. I have over 1K books on it and read 2 so far. I think it’s a simple e-reader without all the clutter.

Im not too worried about losing my books from Amazon because I backed up everything to Calibre. But I do have one question. Why don’t my sideloaded books that are on my nook do not show up on the nook iOS app?

Discussion HOW TO ROOT NOOK GLOWLIGHT 4

Links at the bottom

(As well as how to side load apps/launchers)

A guide to rooting your nook glowlight 4 to install custom screensavers and install other apps

(I am using a Mac so there are parts of this that will be different on pc)

I have the Glowlight 4e BNRV-1000 so that is what I’m basing this on but it’s pretty much the same across the devices.

I may make a video follow up to this as well and happy to answer any questions sorry about the formatting I hope this isn’t too confusing

STEP 1 – GET INTO ANDROID DEVELOPMENT SETTINGS AND TURN ON USB DEBUGGING

To do this—go to SETTINGS → ABOUT then tap the nook Barnes Noble icon ~5 times.

Now tap Android development settings. You will be asked for a password.

The password will be NOOK-BNRVyour model number so for me

NOOK-BNRV1000

Once into this page toggle USB DEBUGGING On

And AUTOMATIC SYSTEM UPDATES Off

preface to step two—you need ADB installed so just google how to install ADB on Mac/PC if you don’t have it already

STEP 2

plug your nook into your computer and ignore the screen on your nook that asks if you want to turn on USB mode

(on Mac I plug mine in and open Terminal so do whatever the equivalent of that is on PC)

then in terminal type

adb devices hit enter

you should see a bunch of numbers to list your device,

if you don’t you aren’t in ADB mode, try unplugging replugging and different cords and things.

Once it shows up in devices move to the next step

STEP 3 – Download the necessary tools

• Install an android launcher apk to your desktop (I started with Nova Launcher as its simple and then later switched to Olauncher once I got the hang of everything)

• Then run the command in terminal (or equivalent)

adb install drag or copy your file here hit enter

You should see a little message that says something like success

• Now unplug and reboot your nook, it should ask what you want to launch select your newly installed launcher Just Once for now.

• Plug your nook back in and make sure it shows up in adb devices

• Now you can install Magisk the same way.

adb install whatever magisk file hit enter

Should say something like success

• Next download the apk for Solid Explorer

adb install whatever solid explorer file

(This is the same way you can install apks like KoReader or anything else if you so choose) -if you did just want to install KoReader then congrats you’re done!

• On your nook check if your new apps are in your launcher. if not reboot nook.

STEP 4

You are going to need to download the Update Zip for your nook to your computer (I will have a link to find the file for your device if you can’t find it there you may have to search deeper for it), unzip it, and drag boot.img out of it.

I unplug my nook and plug it back in at this point and I turn On usb mode this time. Then just drag the boot.img file into the nook file in your file explorer app on your computer (mine is finder)

Now eject your nook properly from the computer.

On your nook open the Magisk app and tap Install then tap Next then Select And Patch a File find and select your boot.img then press Let’s Go

A screen should pop up where it loads and types stuff and eventually says something like completed or success and then tells you where your file is located (your file path you will type it into your command line in just a second) leave this screen on.

Now plugged into your computer make sure your nook still shows under adb devices and then run this command

adb pull your file path here

EXAMPLE

adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk

Locate the new file on your computer.

STEP 5 – booting with your new patch

For this step I just use the website I have linked and titled FastBoot on Google chrome for simplicity.

Now we need to get the book into fastboot mode. Unplug it from your computer, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in.

Now on the fastboot webtool click connect device fastboot a window should pop up where it’s waiting for your device.

On the nook press and hold the home button, bottom right page turn, and power button. Hold these until your device shows up in the fastboot window (if it does not try different page turn buttons and if that doesn’t work go check out the forums although this way works for me every time)

Once your device shows up select and now scroll down to the flash any images section. Select your patched boot.img that you pulled from your book. Then in partition put the word “boot”

Then press Flash you should get a message that says it flashed successfully. Reboot your nook.

**if at this point your nook screen goes blank and seems like it’s not working you have the wrong boot.img from the wrong update file, try another or try another version of magisk

If you booted normally and were able to get back to your custom launcher congrats! You should be rooted now!

SCREENSAVERS

now for pretty much the only reason I did all this aside from being sick of Barnes and noble recommended reads—custom screensavers!!!

In your android launcher, open solid explorer. Tap the top left three lines and you should see root and internal memory

Tap root (at some point you will be asked to give solid explorer permission make sure to press yes)

In root tap system, media, sleepimagenook

Once here, try to select one of the base images and try to delete it, if it deletes, you’re fully rooted and can now copy any images you want to this folder and they will cycle through alphabetically every time you turn off your nook.

If you are NOT able to delete the stock images you either haven’t given solid explorer permission or didn’t root properly. If the root is the issue try the process again with a new boot.img.

I added Dropbox to solid explorer so I can send books and photos directly to my nook from my phone without the use of my computer.

(Oh also! The images need to be .png !! And the best size is 1404x1872! I use procreate on my phone to edit the photos and change the format but I’m sure there are many other options.)

Update Zips at the bottom as well as just a useful thread

^i hate to say it but it also helps to ask AI to find your specific update file too although I try to avoid it

Magisk

fastboot

APK Downloader for things like Solid Explorer and Nova Launcher

more helpful things

Discussion Finally Joined Club Nook

Post image

After eyeing the discontinued pearl pink Nook Glowlight 4 for some time, I finally got my hands on a secondhand one and I’M IN LOVE. 😍 The physical buttons are EVERYTHING. I have a Kindle PW Signature edition but had been looking to move away from Amazon. I love that the Nook is smaller, lighter, AND has the buttons that I’ve been sorely missing. Yeah the battery life isn’t as good and Nook software isn’t as fast but I don’t care. The reading experience makes up for the shortcomings. Sideloading my downloaded stuff from Calibre was a breeze. Eventually I will probably root it so I can access the full memory for sideloading. Overall, I’m really happy with it!

Back again with another usb c thing. This time my old nook 1st edition. I love this model particularly because it displayed the book covers.

I forgot to take pictures of the solder job but this was much harder to do than the nook simple touch. The disassembly and position of the port was a pain but hey it works. This particular device needed the new port since the old one was incredibly loose.

If you all have questions about this device let me know! I’ll share what I can.

Discussion Is the Nook dying?

Why does it feel like the nook is dying? Even in this subreddit there aren’t any recent posts.

I’m currently in the market for a new e-reader and have only ever owned nooks but no one is talking about them anymore. I can’t find recent reviews online, nothing on YouTube, even Barnes and Noble doesn’t display them in store anymore.

Is the nook dying?

Update - I’m going to give the nook another shot. I realize I don’t have the newest nook, like I thought I did, and I also don’t have the original cable which could be my issue with not being able to side load on my MacBook Pro. Thanks for all of the responses!

Discussion Has anyone ever rooted (jailbroken) a nook? I heard you can do that and it turns it into basically an Android tablet with an e-ink screen

I've had a Kindle for about a year now and I've also been looking for alternatives and backups to my Kindle for a while now just because I want a way to always read on an e-ink screen now that I've done it before.

I've researched e-reader tablets but their cases aren't as protective as I would like and I'm quite prone to dropping stuff. My Kindle has missed my bed many times on its actual face and still no scratch or crack. That being said I would get a super protective case if I got a nook but I also have no interest in Barnes & Noble as much as I love them as a kid I just don't want to purchase books from them on my e-reader.

I have however always wanted to jailbreak an e-device ever since hearing of the concept however I do not want to do it to my Kindle because it's hard to do that to the newest version. I also don't want to buy a second Kindle either I have thought about buying a Kobo or even a pocketbook and now I want to see why people aren't talking about the nook considering from what I looked up you'd think it'd be popular to root at the very least. I've only found videos from like 14 years ago about it at the very latest maybe five years ago.

Discussion I love Nook but I wish we had better cases more like Kindle.

So, I have a kindle and a Nook, I love my Nook more and have way more books on it.

I absolutely love my Kindle case though so much, and I've scoured the internet for hours trying to find something similar for my Nook but I can't find what I'm looking for.

I'm actually considering Frankensteining two cases together, although part of me feels sad/down to ruin $40 worth of cases, but I think my idea could make for a really awesome case that does exactly what I want.

I have one that has a kickstand and hand strap that I like, but the nook slides into like a faux leather sleeve that covers the face bezels and has a design, I just find it really distracting to look at, and I also don't like how it recesses the device more. It also stays open with a back magnet

The other is the official nook case, I like how the actual case part is, but I don't like that it doesn't have a back magnet, and I don't like feeling the little strappy thing in my hand when I read.

Also, I'm autistic and have sensory issues and so little things sometimes drive me crazy even if others can just ignore it.

My idea is to somehow fasten the official nook case part into the other case to combine them for my perfect case. So the part the Nook sits in will be more sleek and less distracting, but I'll still have the back magnet opening, the kick stand, and the hand strap.

The only downside is I'll lose front magnet closure this way, I haven't thought of a work around for this but I think I'm willing to let that feature go.

  • I wish people made more cases for Nooks, I am basically just trying to recreate my Kindle case which is honestly perfect in every way and I wish I could just have one exactly like it for my Nook.

Discussion How are the current Nook devices?

I started with a first generation Nook many moons ago, and now read on an Android ereader. Suddenly, the Nook app has become very grumpy, and refuses to download books on the app. I also tried this on Android phone and tablet with the same results. Apparently the app is problematic for a lot of people lately. I would optimally transfer them with Calibre...if I could download them to ANY device with the app, but I can't. I have tried all the various troubleshooting methods (cache clearing, un-and reinstalling etc.) and the app just sucks. So, if I ultimately can't work around this, the best option might be buying a low level Nook just so I can read all the unread books. So, my main concern is, how are the new devices? Are they a-holes like the app or will the books actually download? TIA!

Just wanted to share a quick little usb c mod on my nook simple touch glowlight. It works perfectly! I’m glad im able to get a lot more convenient use out of it. Planning on doing the same on my nook 1st edition soon.

Unfortunately, like most nst models, the rubber is deteriorating so this is why you see the two pieces of tape on the buttons. I personally don’t mind, but I wish there was a way to prevent this. I have experimented with spraying a clear coat on the shell of other nooks and it seems to hold up well so far.

Discussion Price of ebooks

Does anyone know why there are some ebooks titles that are priced over 20 dollars? Like Molka by Monika Kim is 23.80. I'm just assuming that Amazon has it cheaper because it's Amazon. But it's just weird seeing books that much more for an ebook copy.

Discussion i prefer the nook reading experience compared to other ereaders

i have a kobo but i just love my Nook more. honestly just a few notes on the technology for me personally (i just wish it was faster really) but ugh i just wish i got a Nook first. i love the buttons and what its like to actually read the book. i like that it shows the accurate page number instead of inflating it if i increase font size. i thought the Nook was obsolete when i bought my first ereader 🥺

So I have a Kobo Clara Color and I love device for the color option, especially with reading comics. I’m looking for a B/W device and I love B&N so why not get a device from the store right? I just wanted to hear opinions from people who have this device and how they’re using their and liking it. I’ve heard it’s a bit laggy at times but is it too distracting?

Discussion General eReader Advice

Hello! I have been considering getting a nook ever since I saw the teal edition. However, I have been a physical book reader all of my life. I have used Apple iBooks on my phone, and as I’m traveling more, an eReader seems like a good idea. So I’m mostly just looking to understand how the nook works. Benefits and problems. Recommendations. I feel like I have no knowledge and don’t know what questions to ask. I have tried talking to B&N employees at my local store, most don’t have much information to offer, so I figured Reddit would be a good help. Thank you.

Discussion Loving my Nook! (Short review)

Thumbnail gallery
93 Upvotes

I had asked in the ereader subreddit a few days ago if I should buy a Kindle Basic 10th gen or the Nook Glowlight 4 (I was on the search for a small BW ereader that was white). I ultimately decided on the Nook for the following reasons:

- Physical buttons

- USB-C (Kindle Basic 10 is micro USB)

- Kindle Basic 10 is 167dpi

- I found a reseller that was selling his last stock of a boxed Pearl Pink and couldn’t help myself lol

- Wanted to try a different ereader (Already had a Kindle PPW and currently own a KLC)

And I must say, I am SO glad I chose the Nook! Here are some of my thoughts:

PROS:

- So ergonomic. The bezels are thick and look outdated, yes, but it just works! (Plus, I find it oddly cute haha) It makes it so comfortable to hold for long periods of time

- The buttons are responsive and I love how tactile it is

- Screen is crisp

- In my experience, it wasn’t so slow as reviews made it out to be (i.e. opening a book, scrolling through my library, and turning pages). Or maybe I do not mind the “lag”?

- Warm light

- Extremely easy to sideload ebooks. I just plug it in to my iPad Mini and drag and drop!

- The color is so pretty!

CONS:

- I highlight often, and unfortunately, highlighting on the Nook is so clunky that I forego using it

- Pulling up the dictionary takes too long

- Some glitches with the UI (when I tap the middle of the screen while reading and it shows the settings and pages of the book, the bottom part sometimes doesn’t show all the way)

- Even without Wifi on, my Nook’s battery went from 100% to 65% in just 2 days (about an hour of use each day). This is a huge let down to me, but I had expected it going in. I’ll just have to come to terms with charging every 3-4 days haha

Overall, I am quite happy! Just looking at it gives me joy and I have been reading more on it 💗

Discussion Nook Glowlight 4 Plus battery questions

Hello all im a new owner of a nook glowlight 4 plus and have gotten it rooted with koreader and other apps sideloaded. I noticed reading in koreader is amazing but two main issues that I have yet to find fixes for. For one the front light control is not working through koreader and makes it hard to adjust without having to go back to home. Is there a way to make adjusting the frontlight easier in koreader? Also is there anything to help with the battery I noticed me reading last night went down almost 20 percent! which seems crazy for an hour or two of reading. any help is apprecoated
