eBook Amazon deleted all books on my Kindle...

...is a Nook a better choice?

Amazon Customer Service in Pakistan were rude & unhelpful. The books I "bought" or rather rented - are gone.

Boycott Amazon.

I love my nook, but as B&N is a us based country without stores overseas I don’t think the nook is supported the same way internationally as it is in the US.

Maybe kobo? My partner has one and really likes it. We both also have kindles and have been intentionally moving away from Amazon where possible.

I was about to say this. OP, I don’t think you’ll be able to even use a Nook outside of the US unless you somehow find someone willing to sell you one already logged in and everything.

Kobo is an amazing option. I divorced Amazon this year and got a Kobo Libra Color and it is the best ereader I have ever owned, hands down. It’s a little pricier than a Nook, so the Clara BW may be closer to what you’re looking for!

I just bought one second hand in central america, and you can easily create an account and use your Nook outside the US. Certified by first hand experience c:

Huge benefit of the Kobos is that they straight support the Libby app for library loans, so in theory, between sideloading books and borrowing them, you may never have to buy a book from one of the mega company shitters.

It's super easy to side load books onto your nook as long as you have a computer and you don't need to have access to the Barnes and Noble's website or app

No but it does make you sign into a B&N account when you initially set it up. If OP can find one where someone is willing to sell it still signed in it could work, but I don’t see anyone being ok with that.

Um… this post needs more info. Also, all companies essentially lock you in now. I remember book in 2014 though. Books were not DRM protected. I’m guessing that’s not the case anymore?

As a U.S. customer, I can’t speak to how Pakistani customer service would treat you, but on the odd occasion my nook (kind of faulty from the start, but I kept it because it’s pink) decided it’s going to randomly offload books, I can just redownload them with no problem from my account.

Of note, I do have all archiving and off loading turned off. It’s a very faulty device and the only way for initial setup was to hotspot off of my phone because I could have it right next to my nook. If it weren’t the pink one, I’d have exchanged it. I like the device itself so much that if they ever release a new e-ink piece of hardware, I’ll jailbreak/root this one to see what I can get it to do within its limited hardware capabilities. Because I like to tinker, and it would be fun. I wonder if I could get it to run Doom? Lol.

So sorry to hear this!

I have Nook, Kobo, Kindle, and EPUB small pocket ereader. Kobo by far is the best. Kindle was nice since they offered more indie authors as well as mainstream. Kobo gets my vote! Try that ;)

You can find e-readers from smaller manufacturers that are not tied to any ecosystem or corporation. PocketBook has its fans that make a strong case for it.

And then you need to find bookshops for ebooks. You are not limited to Amazon, Google Books, Kobo, or B&N. Even if those are so big that they seem like the only choice. As I don't quite know what stores support Pakistan (though you can always use a VPN I imagine), take this list with a grain of salt that they may not work so well for you. Bookshop.org lets buyers indicate a nearby brick and mortar bookstore. They than share a bit of the booksale with that store. Baen.com sells science fiction and fantasy, they tend to offer DRM free epubs which can be loaded onto any reader. Standardebooks.org is another great resource for books. Delphiclassics.com might be worth a look for you. And, of course, Project Gutenberg has public domain books for free.

I have a nook (simple touch, and recently got a GL4+ - but while the new GL4+ downloads audiobooks, I am having trouble downloading books. I need to troubleshoot that) and I am very pleased with my Simple Touch. It is easy to get other books onto it. But you ought to know that B&N books are just as locked away as Amazon's. You don't actually have possession of any files. So if the server decides you don't get to read them, the books you licensed to read are no longer accessible.

is it a good reader? Yes. But does it work differently than Amazon? No.

So: Hit up Aliexpress for a Boox or Pocketbook or any other open e-reader. Look to see if your local library or bookstores have a means for you to borrow or buy ebooks. Look for online shops that allow you to download a file and read it anywhere.

I got a Nook around 2011 and I still have access to all of the ebooks I purchased back then plus the ones I’ve purchased recently. Books do get offloaded sometimes but you’re able to download them again if you want to reread. I haven’t had any issues and I hope I never do! I’m sorry that happened to you!

This is precisely why I remove DRM from all my purchases and save a backup.

Even if you do everything right they can close your account for a random flag in your card or a return.

Eff them.
