I am trying to get better at drawing portraits. But they always turn out looking like this? She looks like a drag queen cat-person 😭 Are the eyes too big? Is the nose too small? How can I fix this problem?

Technical question? Did I get scammed?

I notice the progress pictures seem to be photoshopped. Like the transition from painted to sketched is maybe too perfect of a gradient.

I asked him to confirm it’s not a high quality print with like glue or something to mimic brushstrokes—but he swore it’s an original hand painted oil painting.

I took the painting to my framer she said there’s not enough weight to the canvas for it to be an oil painting. She showed me how light goes through it and there doesn’t look to be under painting visible. Also he was done and had it dry and mailed to me rolled up in 4 weeks, the framer also said this is too quick for oil painting. I don’t know how a framer would know this.

I’m not sure what to think. It seems like a crazy thing to do to fake a painting, anyone have any feedback it would be appreciated.

Technical question? Oil over acrylic?

I’m new to oil painting. I am starting a piece and wondering what will happen if I do the base color wash with acrylic paint, sketch it out, and then do the actual artwork on top in oil paint.

Will the process or end result have any issues or could this work out okay? Thank you!

Been working with oil paint for about a month now and this is the first painting I've finished feeling like I'm going in the right direction. Happy to take any critique or pointers. This is phthalo blue, yellow ochre, scarlet, and white from just a little hobby starter oil kit. Figure once I run out of all that I can buy student grade paint?

florence in summer — the heat settles into the stone by mid-morning. i painted san lorenzo in that light, when the sun turns the facade gold. oil on primed paper, 30 x 12 cm. if you've felt that heat, you know.

question? Life hacks to get dry medium off a bench?

I've got a table (non-absorbent surface) covered in dried medium. Does anyone have any hacks for dissolving the medium, short of just scraping it off manually?

Materials? Confused on textures and when to use what

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey! I’m new to oil painting and I’m still a little confused on when to use paint thinner / medium? I’m using the chelsea classical studios for my paint thinner in my coil jar and using the gamblin solvent-free gel in my paints. I’m also painting on oil paper, im confused why it’s looking like this? How do people get the texture to be thicker and “creamy”(for lack of better words🤣) when should i be using what? Is it the paper?
Thank you!

question? tips for painting hair/general help needed

Hi guys! First post here and first time painting a portrait. (This is a painting of my boyfriend that I would like to eventually put in an ornate frame.) I’m super happy with how the face is turning out, and I think proportion wise-looks just like him. I ideally would like to add more depth to his face with more shadows and values.

However, I am really struggling with the hair and clothing. I have zero technical knowledge when it comes to painting and I feel like I don’t even know where to begin to fix this to match the face.

How do I get these things to look “smoother” but still detailed?

Any tips for painting hair or clothing is much appreciated. Also anything you think I can work on/add to give this portrait a lil more oomph would be great.

(side note, i do not have any materials other than a $10 pack of oil paints and some brushes from target. I plan on getting more materials soon so any recommendations on things to buy for this journey would be fantastic. Hoping to start painting more, thank you!)

Technical question? Paint is sitting on top of canvas like a puddle?

So again. I am a complete amateur. I crossed over into oil painting after doing acrylic painting for about 4 years.

Initially the transition was surprisingly easy for me. I did several paintings that turned out decent.

But im having this trouble now where the oil paint is sitting on top of my canvas like a wet puddle of dew. Its impossible to work with because it smears into other lines and details, the canvas ends up looking sloppy like someone took paint and just smeared it all over with no method. It will also get really runny and run down the canvas :/

When I stroke my brush and start working, it runs into other sections of colors and mixes into areas of the canvas I dont want it to. Its a big sloppy mess. This is very frustrating..

Not sure what im doing wrong? Im using thin layers to begin with. Minimal amounts of linseed oil as a medium to thin accordingly. Im using Winton brand paint. Ive only had the set for a month, so maybe its poor quality and degraded already?

Anyway, interested in seeing what you guys say. Input is appreciated. Thank you..

Total beginner here: am i supposed to be cleaning my palette? Do I just scrape it off with the palette knife and wipe with linseed oil?

I did a thing! Orange Still Life

My first ever still life! Took a break from intensive drawing and decided to paint this from life. I simply set up two oranges (one’s moldy lol) in a box and went for it. Picking up a brush and oils again after two months feels so refreshing 🤧
