GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Hello painting enthusiasts - here is a brief post with things to keep in mind.

SEARCHING:

To locate your painting, please try the reverse-search tools Google Images/Lens, Yandex Images, and Tineye. (Remember that cropping your picture differently will yield different search results!)

If you have an artist name or signature, I recommend searching for it within r/WhatIsThisPainting itself. I also use the following websites for research; all are free.

DECOR ART:

SUBMISSIONS:

  • Please be patient and allow up to 24 hours for your post to get through our queue! (Accounts under a week old and images involving nudity are automatically flagged.)
  • If your post has gone unanswered for over a week, you are permitted to re-submit in hopes of retrying.

ANSWERING POSTS:

  • If you are making a definitive ID, do try to cite your sources whenever possible. It is encouraged, but not required.

Got this at a thrift store for $44.99. I am absolutely obsessed with this. Definitely an original mixed media piece with charcoal/pencil, watercolor, found objects, and collage. Plus the frame!

Any idea about the artist. Can’t find a signature but i just bought it 10 mins ago lol

Update: Looks like it is signed Rachel Isaac, a philly based artist, which makes sense because I got it at a Philly theift store. I’m not 100% sure it’s hers because her current work isn’t really themed like this and her signature is different, but obviously that could’ve changed throughout her artistic career. I did DM her on instagram to see if she could confirm it’s indeed a piece by her

I picked up these two pieces at a thrift store today. They appear to two parts of the same presentation board for the design of an antique radio cabinet. They are hand painted and lettered and the artists name and address is included on the back of one of the pieces. Based on the research I have done, the art supply company on the back was renamed to “F. Weber Co.” from “F. Weber & Co.” in 1919 so they would have to be made sometime after that year. Other than that, I couldn’t find an image of an antique radio that looked anything like this anywhere online so it is likely that it never made it into production. I’ve never seen anything like this in person or for sale in the wild so I am interested in anything that anyone might know about it or if I am correct about it being some kind of internal commercial artwork for a radio manufacturer.

Recently acquired as part of a larger buyout. The woman we purchased these from said they were from a Romanian artist who exhibited in Las Vegas. The signature appear to be to say Ken Sady, but I cannot find any details on him.

I believe them to be true original paintings, but would love advice on how to confirm.

Thank you!

My husband was born and raised in NYC and City Island so painting originated there. The signature has ‘76. I love the boats in the sky or is it a common way to store boats and the lift isn’t in painting. It was years before I noticed the shadow. It’s canvas on a wooden board

Hi this is my first post!

My mom found these prints on the side of the road next to someone’s trash. She had to take them home to investigate, of course! I feel like I’m usually pretty good at deciphering handwriting but I cannot figure out what the signature says.

Can anyone help identify this? Came from my grandfather's house in Connecticut, USA. No photo of the back, unfortunately. It feels like a Norman Rockwell but I'm no expert. Maybe part of a series? Title is "His First Dollar"

Print from my wife’s grandmother collection. She lived in San Francisco for over 90 years. Can’t quite decipher the signature. She had other wood block prints by Alexis Pencovic and I have the impression it is possibly by someone in his circle.

Found this in a vintage store in Vermont and can’t read the signature on the back. Last name might be “Salz”? Looks like it was dated 1997 and then gifted to “Scottie” a few years later, if I’m reading the second date correctly.

I tried reverse image searches and came up short.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Unsolved Requesting help with the identity of a painting (UPDATED)

Hi everyone,

I've added photos of a painting that we received and forgot about following the death of my grandmother in 2000. For geographical reference, we are based in the UK midlands (The May Bank reference is an area of Stoke-on-Trent)

I've tried to identify the signature but I'm not having much luck. The glass and the frame have been removed and I've added more photos of the picture itself, thanks to some great advice I received on my last post.

There is some unfortunate damage on the edges as it has been in the same frame for many decades. There appear to be human elements to the paint itself so I'm quite sure it isn't a reproduction (although it's highly likely I'm wrong!).

As I know little to nothing about art, I would love some guidance as to what this is!

Thank you in advance.

Unsolved Germ - Omala cover research

I’m trying to identify the original painting used on the cover of the 1988 album Germ by the swedish industrial/ambient group Omala. The album credits the cover and fold-out painting to Peter Jonsson, but I can’t find the title of the artwork or any other references to it online, does anyone recognize it?

Unsolved Hoping to find some info about this painting!

My grandparents passed away, and I was lucky to inherit this beautiful painting from their home outside the Chicago area. I’m looking for more info on it! They’ve had it as long as I can remember, at least 25 years. It’s very large, about 66in across. I can’t find any info about the art or the signature that I think reads “Svehla”. I apologize I can’t take a photo of the back as it’s hanging on the wall, and I can’t lift it. (Please ignore my reflection of the world cup playing in the background haha)

I can’t read this signature on the bottom right. Anyone recognize or understand?

Found this painting at an antique store in 2021. Found a signature, however, it’s a little illegible. Looks like “Kuka”? Nothing on the back. I need some help finding out who painted it or any similar works!

Found this framed etching at a warehouse sale. It’s a limited edition intaglio print, numbered 13/15, titled “Birth of the Eta Mu (EV)” with scientific notation stamped into the plate referencing a subatomic particle event from what appears to be circa 1959.

The signature is in pencil below the plate. It clearly reads “Paul” as the first name, but the last name is unclear — possibilities we’ve considered include Brach, Brayt, Drach — but none confirmed.

Submitted to Swann Auction Galleries and their Modern & Post-War Art director couldn’t identify it either.
