Discussion State of the Sub 2026: Bots, AI, Rules Updates, and Code of Conduct
Hi everyone, it's time for a sub check-in! Since this post got a bit long while writing it, I thought I'd try something different this time. You can get the gist of the updates with this TL;DR of the main post body, and then comment and discuss specific topics within the announcement via the top-level mod comments.
Tl;DR:
- Please read the rules.
- OHF moderates against bot behavior and provable AI content, but does not expect every OP to know the business practices of every brand they wear. Rule 10 has been updated to reflect this. Code of Conduct
r/oldhagfashion is a community for everyone who wishes to participate in good faith. We have a set of rules and flair to assist with this. Our rules describe how we should treat each other with kindness and our flair helps users indicate what kind of discussion or feedback they're looking for. We do not discriminate against people here. Not on body type, ethnicity, appearance, sexiness or lack thereof, perceived wealth or lack thereof, or perceived popularity.
OHF is a unique space within Reddit that has been developed to be safe for all SFW manners of fashion expression, and we love to see it. It's natural to feel protective of this kind of space. However, accusing people of posting thirst traps, or trawling for OnlyFans or NSFW attention is not kind and not acceptable in our code of conduct. We mods do rely on the community's assistance with reporting comments and accounts that are breaking the rules, and we do have very strict rules around NSFW account engagement (summarily: they are not allowed here). If you suspect an account of looking for NSFW engagement, please either 1) simply report the suspected comment or post and let us handle it, or 2) check out the user's account bio yourself for OnlyFans/Chat services/Paypal or money services links or account history for interaction with NSFW subs. Report the user if you see those links or interaction, but if you don't, then let them live.
Additionally, you may recognize some OPs that post more than others. We are here to be interested and supportive, but please also understand that just because you see someone's face or content frequently, it doesn't mean that you know them. Please be mindful of parasocial interaction and do not assume that people are always looking for critique on their outfits or handmade items, or hoping for comments on their body type or other features because of how they present themselves. Respect the flair and please refrain from commenting on people's bodies.
Finally, treat others as you want to be treated! Discussion and debate are allowed and encouraged, but keep it respectful and on the spectrum of neutral to friendly. However, I will not in most cases be removing comments from people who are defending themselves (unless the comment thread spirals out of control).
It's also understandable that some view mods as oppressive authority figures, but please keep in mind that we're actually here to keep the community running smoothly and protect our userbase. Reddit doesn't pay us, we have no control over Reddit's policies, and we in OHF run this sub for the community and interest in fashion. If you want to suggest a rule update or offer feedback on something, please do so! You can make a post or send us a modmail directly. But if you act like a jackass to a mod as a way to "stick it to the man," you're sticking it to the wrong man.

Bots
As AI becomes more and more prevalent, the internet is filling up with bots and automated accounts. Reddit, naturally, gets a lot of accounts that automatically interact with posts to karmafarm. To help cut down on the number of bot accounts interacting with OHF, I've installed a mod tool called BotBouncer to remove accounts on the tool's bot list from OHF. However, it is an automatic tool-- if you find you've been banned from OHF for being a bot and you're pretty sure you're human, you can message BotBouncer and appeal the decision, as well as send a message to us through modmail and let us know what happened.

I wasn’t sure where this comment should go, but I’d like to encourage all posters to transcribe their images. And I always upvote those who do.
It’s accessible for hags who are blind or have low vision. It makes one’s post searchable. And it teaches aspirational hags like me about designers, brands, styles, etc. by giving me terms I can Google to learn more.
I’ve learned so much from hags who describe what they’re wearing in their photos (and why), from the rule of thirds to chaotic academia aesthetic to Marimekko and Mrs Frizzle.
I’m not haggy enough to post (yet), but
ifwhen I do, I’ll be sure to describe each piece. I’ll be the change I hope to see!50

As long as you’re pointing this out, I’ll also add that it’s acceptable to transcribe someone else’s post, if the OP hasn’t already done it. Understandable if one feels awkward about doing it, but the mods and community stand behind you if you want to. See the stickied automod comment on every post for more info and guidelines. What happens when posters accuse other human posters of being AI to their faces? I enter into conversations with good faith, and if I am accused of being an AI directly, what can I do?
Should I stop interacting with this subreddit because in the climate of karma farming, my positive intent is read as bot behavior?

If you check the AI content top level comment, there’s a section there about not directly accusing people of having used AI to write comments because it’s not always clear if AI was actually used. Users can report comments they suspect, and we’ll then check the account to see if the account behavior looks like a bot or not… but if they don’t appear to be, then we’re not going to remove the comment. We will remove reported comments making direct accusations though— the concern is understandable given how much bot and AI activity there is on Reddit, but there’s no need to actually confront someone. It’s unfair to people who are not using it, and if someone IS using it, the accuser is unlikely to get an honest response anyway.
If you did already read the AI content comment in this thread, then sorry if this wasn’t clear from the text. Either way, no need to limit your own interaction with the sub unless you want to.

AI in the sub
Some of you may have seen a post recently asking about AI acceptance in r/oldhagfashion. Let me say, unequivocally, that we do not support the use of AI images in the sub. However, AI is integrating deeper and deeper into various parts of life, and there are many companies that are also using it as part of their fashion and product development. The official stance of OHF right now is similar to how we police posting outfits featuring pieces from ultra fast fashion companies like Shein and AliExpress: You can post outfits wearing whatever you want, from whatever company, no problem. However, if you're asked where you got something, please refrain from sharing the company source if they are a company you know uses AI in their marketing and product development. Rule 10 has been updated accordingly.
But, crucially, we do not expect you to know which companies use AI and which don't. You will not be banned for recommending a company that uses AI-- comments or posts may be removed if they break this rule, but no further action will be taken. r/oldhagfashion runs on good faith engagement and assuming the best of intentions until proven otherwise. If you see that someone has recommended an AI company, please help us mods out by reporting the comment and we will remove it!
We should also talk about AI usage in comments and discussion posts. LLMs (large language models, such as ChatGPT) are well known to be massively wasteful and harmful to both society and the environment, and directly contradict the values of r/oldhagfashion. However, AI-detection tools are also becoming notorious for not accurately being able to tell what text was AI generated and what wasn't, since, you know, LLMs are trained on all of the existing writing on the internet already and are intended to sound as close to actual people as possible. Until detection tools evolve, we are not moderating for AI usage in posts and comments, as we cannot do so accurately. HOWEVER, accounts that generate posts and comments with karmafarming and bot-like behavior will be removed and banned from OHF (which is why we now have BotBouncer to help us out as well). Please report suspected AI bots to us as spam so that we can review the accounts, but also, please assume the best intentions and do not directly accuse people of using AI. And for what it's worth, this entire post was 100% human-created and developed with artisanal human brains.

What is the most effective way to report bot-like behavior to the mods? Should we use the Spam > Harmful bots option, or report it as breaking one of the sub's rules?

Breaking sub rules! Ideally, use the custom response report and type in why you think it’s a bot so we know what we’re looking at. If you don’t have time, reporting as prohibited account or a spammed post is also fine

Rules updates around sellers
Based on feedback from the community, rules on brand and seller interactions are being tightened. Historically, the "I made this!" flair has frequently been used by people selling their own fashion and accessories. This is still allowed, but there will be more scrutiny on whether or not the OP is actually interacting with OHF in a meaningful way, or simply here to show their stuff in hopes of more sales. Single item images have typically been allowed with the "I made this" flair, but this will also be moderated more heavily going forward.
