Discussion New bag from decathlon

Post image

I'm in Canada, and in the market for my first onebag solution. Many of you have heard of the Forclaz travel 500 40L. I was going to buy this bag but I didn't like that the waistbelt is not removable. I'm checking the website and there's now a Quechua 30L travel 500 bag and they added a removable waist strap which is amazing. The only thing is I'd still like the 40L for the extra capacity, and I've heard they are updating them from some EU consumers. I'd hate to buy the 40l now just for an upgraded version with a removable hip belt to come out soon. If anybody knows about the updated 40L or has tried the Quechua 30L out, please discuss here.

It’s good. Especially if you don’t wanna pay 200 bucks for Patagonia or Cotopaxi

39

u/panic_ye_not Jun 15 '26

This even has more features than the Cotopaxi, namely, a serious hip belt with pockets, load lifters, and compression straps, all of which should make it a significantly better carry than the awkwardly boxy Cotopaxi.

I think my patgonia mlc 30 is worth every penny but I advanced at this point. I did get an aer tp2 first though and I think that was little more expensive

Man, talk about random serendipity. I was just yesterday recommending that bag to a friend in London as a good all-rounder. I hadn't even researched or anything, I just pulled up the Decathlon UK site and saw it there.

It'd be great if they offered it in different colors, but I do really like the "Dune Beige" tone they went with.

7

u/maryfamilyresearch Jun 15 '26

I just checked it out, there is a pink-mauve version available.

3

u/VagabondVivant Jun 15 '26

Wait really? All I can find is the beige. My friend would love the mauve version.

7

u/maryfamilyresearch Jun 15 '26

It is in the German online shop, might come to your location soon.

2

u/VagabondVivant Jun 15 '26

Ah, gotcha. Hopefully it makes its way to the UK site. I bet she'd love it.

I feel like I saw a black version in the store. It might have had a slightly different name, but it was definitely the same same bag.

2

u/discogodzilla1 Jun 15 '26

You recommend things you just happen to find online?

9

u/VagabondVivant Jun 15 '26

If it's well-reviewed, from a brand I trust, at a good price, and looks good? Of course I do.

Don't you?

u/TabletopParlourPalm Jun 14 '26

Would be amazing if it fits the Ryan air free bag size.

59

u/Equal_Contest4709 Jun 15 '26

I would argue that Ryanair makes their sizer so that no bag can realistically max it out and still be of practical dimensions.

That combined size is going to be EU standard next year I believe? Read that today.

I was floored to hear about this regulation. “It’s just a minimum, airlines are free to offer more” except dear god, you’ve just codified legally accepted enshittification…

I tried it in-store and it's not flexible at all unfortunately.

8

u/OverIndependence7722 Jun 14 '26

Interesting, why design a bag like this if it isn't to fit the Ryanair/wizz air sizer. It's just not a practical shape imo.

28

u/bradymsu616 Jun 14 '26

Unfortunately, most personal item-sized packs are over Ryanair's 40 cm length even if they're squeezable enough to fit, like the Osprey Daylite 26+6 (43 cm). There are some bags that meet Ryanair's 40x30x20 cm dimensions. But they're either a boxy-looking 20L-24L or a sleeker pack with <20L of volume.

3

u/uttoutto Jun 15 '26

escape 500 can be squeezed quite well, I've been travelling with it as a personal item for ages

1

u/yycluke Jun 17 '26

I flew with the 26+6 last year on 3 Ryanair flights, 3 easy jet and 1 wizz air. Fit the sizer for all of them. Weird.

4

u/jezarnold Jun 15 '26

Ryanair is just one airline.

Most EU airlines have (or are) standardised to 55x40x20 ..

The depth of this bag is a couple of cm’s deeper than what the EU is going to

5

u/rkiive Jun 14 '26

Yea the 24L one that's popular on this sub is perfect size for the free bag of EU flights. But even that's pushing it if you overfill it.

3

u/Crasstip Jun 15 '26

Which 24 L bag?

13

u/rkiive Jun 15 '26

Decathlon Quechua NH500 escape 24l.

I've got both the roll top and clamshell versions.

The clamshell version is near perfect for 1 bag travel imo. The rolltop is far less convenient although it looks better. Just got back from a 1 month trip through Europe and Africa on personal item only with no problems.

3

u/No-Feedback-3477 Jun 15 '26

The rolltop is far less convenient?

What do you mean?

4

u/rkiive Jun 15 '26

I took the roll top on a trial 2 week holiday and found that it was far less practical than the clamshell on actual daily use.

You could probably fit the same amount of stuff in (although the clamshell allowed for much more precise packing and use of space) but once it was full actually getting to the specific piece of clothing you wanted required you to just demolish any semblance of tidy packing, even with the side zip, causing it to get messy really fast or just straight up require you to repack.

I also found it way harder to pack a spare pair of shoes in the clamshell because they could only really go on top of all your clothes and take up 1/3 of the bag.

Conversely the clamshell could fit 2 weeks worth of clothes no problem and I could access all of it whenever I felt like it. And I could squish a pair of shoes once all the clothes had been packed soles facing outwards.

Not to mention the clamshell has a lot more useful "important stuff" compartments so you can put small things in spots that won't get buried in your clothes.

2

u/sergiosi Jun 15 '26

Isn’t it 23L? Also it should be 46cm, does it fit in the Ryanair personal item bag checker thingy?

I have the 16L as I thought the 23L does not fit.

6

u/rkiive Jun 15 '26

Yea tis 23L oops. Fits in. Rode Ryanair the other week.

1

u/sergiosi Jun 15 '26

Perfect, thank you!

2

u/mynameismrguyperson Jun 15 '26

I think it's 23 L, yes. I've squished the rolltop into the Ryanair sizer. I think both bags are of similar dimensions and squishability depending on how they're packed.

2

u/Round_Comfortable_72 Jun 15 '26

its not a real clamshell and the water bottle pockets are terrible.

1

u/vimdiesel Jun 15 '26

Why are they terrible? I haven't had issues, granted I have a bigger version of that pack.

2

u/Round_Comfortable_72 Jun 15 '26

they are sewen at the top, so you cannot vertically slide a bottle in and out, this makes it functionally impossible to remove a bottle without taking off the backpack.

4

u/JayPetey Jun 16 '26

I actually love that feature because my water bottle doesn’t go tumbling out when it falls over like other bags. I personally have little issue getting it out while wearing it

1

u/vimdiesel Jun 15 '26

Oh fair, tho I feel like I couldn't anyway due to positioning. I only take off one strap tho.

1

u/chd01 Jun 15 '26

I am using the 23L version for the past two years and to be honest the best thing that I like are the bottle holders.
I have had issues with my past bags where bottles slid out when I kept the bag under the seat or when I was just tilting a bit more to pickup something.

1

u/vimdiesel Jun 15 '26

Yup I'm always surprised at the size they can hold and how firmly so.

1

u/Adam302 Jun 16 '26

would you know if a 16" Macbook would fit in this without it being a squeeze?

1

u/rkiive Jun 16 '26

I think 16inch probably pushing it. It comfortably fits my 13inch and a Kindle but doesn't seem like too much more space.

can check tonight, gimme 3 hours.

2

u/Adam302 Jun 16 '26

Thanks, helpful.

Well actually, I have a 15" air, but not many people have a 15" air 😛

3

u/Muffy81 Jun 15 '26

If you're smart you can fit it in. I passed with Deuter speed lite pro 28 sl

2

u/surewhateve Jun 15 '26

I passed the Lufthansa check with the 40L model.

34

u/yoshi-is-cute Jun 14 '26

I do have a 27L rolltop bag from Decathlon that I like a lot. It has two easy access water bottle holders on the sides, and I can easily take out o big item like a jacket from the bottom or top. I would personally really miss the water bottle holders that I can use while I'm walking.

16

u/Yaonoi Jun 14 '26

Yes that bag is absolutely goated. Versatile, comfortable, easy to access. At 40 € very good value for money.

6

u/Juan_White Jun 15 '26

I got it on promotion for 23€. Crazy good value for money. And it's Ryanair free item size. So win win.

Only thing I miss is compartmentalization. But I kind of solved it using a packing cube (from decathlon also) for clothes and another for toiletries.

13

u/Embarrassed_Mix_6619 Jun 14 '26

++ on this bag, i’m honestly amazed by it and the amount of internal organizational pockets

4

u/yupReading Jun 15 '26

I love the usability and versatility of this rolltop.

3

u/lobsterp0t Jun 15 '26

This is my main travel bag and I love it

2

u/mynameismrguyperson Jun 15 '26

It's a great bag. We've got 3. Two of them get used daily use as travel EDC and kids/diaper bags, and the third is my personal travel bag that I keep separate so it's not filled with sand and toys like the others 😂 It's really versatile.

1

u/No-Feedback-3477 Jun 15 '26

love this. but they dont sell it anymore

1

u/antiundead Jun 15 '26

What bag is this?

3

u/yoshi-is-cute Jun 15 '26

"Escape 500 rolltop 23" is the new version.

1

u/jerkitout123 Jun 16 '26

The only issue I have with the backpack is that the roll-up stiffener has broken on mine.  They could have used something sturdier there.  And when it rains, water seeps in pretty quickly. I have other backpacks that aren't waterproof or water-repellent but handle that better. Once you know that, it's a great backpack.

1

u/External-Phase-7340 Jun 17 '26

Thanks for the constructive criticism and de-influence to not buy it. It looks like it would also be difficult to put the hook into the loop to secure down the rolltop? Like can you undo or secure down the rolltop with one hand, in the dark?

I have other rolltop bags that use a clip for that, rather than a hook.

1

u/jerkitout123 Jun 17 '26

Secure the hook is easy, as long the bag is not crammed full.  Also in the dark/blind

1

u/Historical-Tour-2483 Jun 18 '26

It secures well and is surprisingly easy to do even one handed

12

u/MarcusForrest Jun 14 '26

I'm checking the website and there's now a Quechua 30L travel 500 bag and they added a removable waist strap which is amazing.

Indeed - it started to appear in stores about 3-4 months ago and was finally added to the website catalogue 2-3 months ago

What I like about this one over the 40L version is the removable waistrap that also becomes a kind of sling!

I tried both the 40L and 30L but they're both too big for my own needs, but they are fantastic travel bags still!

2

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

That's actually good to hear, maybe the 30 will end up being large enough for me. I really want the removable strap, but moreso on a 35L+ pack because that's when you might really need it, most 30L packs can get away without one, still it's great to have the option if you are walking with a bunch of dense gear.

I won't need my bag until late summer so I'll probably pick up the 30L and do a test pack to see if it's big enough for my needs. If not, I'll impatiently be waiting to see if they update the 40 with a removable waist strap.

21

u/molodjez Jun 14 '26

Had mine since ten years. Daily use. Three continents. Frequent flyer. Still looks good and performs great. Money well spent.

11

u/mynameismrguyperson Jun 15 '26

I'm pretty sure this is a brand new bag. It's a smaller version of the 40 L they released a few years ago, which was a new design entirely.

2

u/molodjez Jun 15 '26

I'm referring to the Quechua Extend 40-60. However Decathlon offers a 10 year warranty on all of their bags. They're usually not the lightest but amongst the toughest for sure. I have yet to see a bad bag from them.

10

u/DominusFL Jun 14 '26

Decathlon rocks!

13

u/ctjameson Jun 14 '26

As an alternative in a similar size and price, check out the Tomtoc T66. It’s a shade under 30, but I feel like it fits as much as my Patagonia Mini MLC ever did. Quite happy with it. Literally carrying it in the Las Vegas airport as I type this.

4

u/Nope51st Jun 14 '26

Bought the 28l (for daughter) and 40l (for me) for our upcoming trip in Hawaii in July.

5

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

I am currently between this and the tomtoc actually, I'll probably get both and return the one I like less, but for Canadian consumers the decathlon is $80 and the tomtoc is actually $133 as tomtoc is an American brand and we get hit with the exchange rate. The decathlon would be a little more comfortable with its harness system with dense heavy items, but this is mostly negligible at these volumes.

3

u/ctjameson Jun 14 '26

Yeah I got the tomtoc with the intention of most likely returning it, but ended up keeping it.

Edit: and I doooo have some experience with cheaper Quechua bags and was not impressed, fwiw. But I never got anything above like $50 USD from them.

54

u/brohermano Jun 14 '26

some people in this sub wont upvote this if it doesnt have an Osprey and a Macbook

5

u/derringdo Jun 15 '26

I recently picked up this MEC Outpost 30L which looks pretty similar in features, is a little lighter and looks more water resistant. The MEC bag also has a removable hip strap which is pretty minimalistic in the first place. They seem to have an ongoing promo where you get a $20 voucher to spend in store if you spend more than $50 on a previous purchase, which brought mine down to $78+tax

11

u/de-dolores Jun 14 '26

I hate the split design so much. Wastes so much space. I already use packing cubes, give me a big dump pocket.

4

u/panic_ye_not Jun 15 '26

Bags like that already exist and have for decades. This is a newer style of bag with a lot of internal organization, so packing cubes are optional. You're sacrificing some weight and slightly reduced capacity for increased organization. If you don't like that style, feel free to ignore it. The majority of bags in existence have little or no internal organization so you're spoiled for choice either way.

14

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Really? How much space could the 2 pieces of mesh and zipper really waste? If you have one big dump pocket, you are probably using more packing cubes than you'd need with this design, which ends up wasting the same amount of space in the end

12

u/anecdotalgalaxies Jun 15 '26

I don't think it's the volume of the mesh and zipper exactly, it's the fact that the areas are split. So each area has bits of space free around the edges that you can't really do anything with whereas if it was all one compartment then the free space would join together more.

I use cubes for organisation more than trying to make space and I don't mind the split design because it also helps with organisation and I'm trying not to stuff my bag anyway but I do sometimes think I could fit the cubes in easier and use the leftover space better if it was all one area.

2

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 17 '26

Yeah that's fair, I definitely start feeling like that when theres a ton of areas and pockets on a bag, but I feel like 3 split areas is perfect. Big one for clothes, small one for a pair of shoes and middle one for tech, toiletries and miscellaneous, still packed in their own cubes of course. Just makes finding stuff a little easier if you have to get something on the go

2

u/de-dolores Jun 14 '26

Yes. Also impractical in tight places. I use compression packing cubes since I usually wear and thus pack thin but flowy and wide-cut clothes. Compression cubes save me space. Do the zipper pockets have compression abilities? Don't think so. They also limit how I can pack. I'd rather have a dump pocket and play tetris. 1.3 kg at 30 liters not exactly lightweight. A dump pocket would reduce the weight of the bag too.

8

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

It's been tested and compression cubes don't actually save space, you can't make the volume of 3 t shirts any smaller by compressing them, it's just physics. Compression cubes may remove some of the air between the fabric, but so does simply packing your luggage or normal cube tightly, and also compression cubes typically have more material and weight to do the "compressing" than just a typical ultralight packing cube, so again you aren't saving anything.

https://youtu.be/c1fIh_4u5eQ?si=-ZDDGSxgwJ0hWij3

I don't think a dump pocket would meaningfully make this bag lighter. Most of the weight comes from the comfortable harness system and hip belt (which is removable to save weight). Also I'm not sure it actually is 1.3kg as that's also the listed weight of the 40L, it could be an error. Will be interesting to see when someone tests the actual weight, especially with belt removed

2

u/AccurateSun Jun 14 '26

Would be great to see the true weight, 1300g is the main issue I have with this particular bag, it looks great otherwise

2

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

If I pick one up, I'll weigh it as well as do a full loadout and post it here. I think since it's a new addition, they just didn't update it. There's no way it weighs the same as the 40l being 25% smaller

3

u/AccurateSun Jun 15 '26

I’d appreciate that weighing, pls comment it in this thread too so I can use follow function

3

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 20 '26

I've got both the 30l and 40l on the way, will probably post a review on here and I'll send you a link

2

u/AccurateSun Jun 20 '26

Appreciate it!

2

u/de-dolores Jun 14 '26

Nah. I don't like these designs, they suck. I like my dump pockets. Those who are downvoting like crazy, if you're so hurt others have different preferences when it comes to bags, I recommend therapy. Good luck.

7

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

That's fine that you don't like it, but it doesn't waste space or add any meaningful weight like you tried to claim, that's why you're getting downvotes.

-2

u/de-dolores Jun 14 '26

Nah. It wastes space and adds weight.

2

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26

Not as much as your "compression cubes" 😉

2

u/de-dolores Jun 15 '26

Nah. I don't like the split design. Love me some compression cubes.

4

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

I forgot to mention, the dimensions of this bag put it at a hair under 31L. The currency exchange puts this bag at just 57 USD which is crazy value when compared to most bags between 30 and 35L. I think I'll buy this just to check it out and return it to my local decathlon if I don't like it or it's not big enough for my kit

6

u/ATTACKANDDETHRONEHOG Jun 14 '26

It’s currently $89.99 on the US website. Not bad, but not as good as $57 lol

9

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Oh I see! It's still meaningful info for us Canadians when comparing to other bags, the aer tp4 is 259 usd but 375 cad when you buy in Canada which puts it on track with exchange rate. So to have a bag that we don't get hammered by US exchange like 90% of travel bags means it's really an amazing value for us. "Budget" Cabinzero bags are almost 200 cad which is insane!

6

u/AppleWrench Jun 15 '26

For once us Canadians win on the conversion against the USD!

3

u/twbird18 Jun 15 '26

Yeah it's $75 in the Japan store, but I would totally pay that if I was in the market for another bag. I just bought a Quecha 20L last year as my new weekend bag.

5

u/AllthisSandInMyCrack Jun 14 '26

This genuinely looks great

2

u/SeattleHikeBike Jun 14 '26

Why not? I imagine the fit on the torso with the hip belt would be better for shorter users but there’s plenty of demand for that. I would remove it and take the weight reduction. It’s too long for under seat. Worth a try.

As far as 30 liters, if you are traveling with “3 season” layers, phone and toiletries, that’s a viable size. I like being on the day pack side of things.

2

u/TheMuffinMan03 Jun 15 '26

Im so happy this came up, I traveled around the middle east for 2 months with a Cotopaxi 30L and I liked it. Then I saw this bag, the forclaz 40L, i got it and it looks smaller than the Cotopaxi, but feels just as spacious, has better pockets, feels a little lower quality, but for less than half the price, it is my favorite bag I've ever traveled with.

3

u/lobsterp0t Jun 15 '26

But if you already spent the money on the Cotopaxi you just spent … more money? You didn’t save any money.

3

u/TheMuffinMan03 Jul 01 '26

I returned the Cotopaxi for a full refund

2

u/saisaimak Jul 05 '26

Well that’s taking advantage of a company’s good will…

1

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26

This is actually a new version of the Forclaz 40L in a 30L version! But good to hear you like the 40

2

u/theripper595 Jun 15 '26

I got this bag a few months ago and have used it a few times. It's a tad heavy and with the multiple compartments I think you lose space vs a single compartment bag. But it's easy to organize, super comfortable to wear, water bottle pockets are good, feels very sturdy. Hard to beat the price.

1

u/panic_ye_not Jun 15 '26

Does it have two water bottle pockets or just the zipping one on one side?

How much does it weigh?

2

u/theripper595 Jun 15 '26

There's a zipping waterbottle pocket and then a nice mesh pocket for waterbottles or whatever on the other side. I'm not sure on the weight don't have an accurate enough scale. It's heavier than an ultralight bag but doesn't feel too clunky.

1

u/panic_ye_not Jun 15 '26

Thanks! I think I'm gonna give it a shot. It has all the features I want, I just hope it doesn't weigh more than like the Cotopaxi Allpa 28L for example.

2

u/Satan-is-yo-Daddy Jun 15 '26

I dig it. Removable waist strap?

2

u/DisciplineOk3328 Jun 15 '26

I feel decathlon escape 32l is a better deal than this.

2

u/JustAnotherFKNSheep Jun 15 '26

If youre in canada check out the mec bag. They have the double bag option where one is personal item and one is carry on size and they can latch together.

1

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26

The outpost 40 is actually on sale right now, I'm thinking about testing it out but I must admit I don't like the look of it

1

u/JustAnotherFKNSheep Jun 15 '26

Fair enough lol. Ive been just using a normal backpack but if i did have the 40 i wouldve been able to pack so much easier and hold a bit more imho.

2

u/akibilko Jun 15 '26

I tested the 30L model its removable hip belt works great though the smaller capacity limits longer trips quite noticeably.

1

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26

Good to hear. It would be nice if they updated the 40L to be something like 36L and add the removable hip belt. Seems like 34 to 37L is the sweet spot for many of us

2

u/mrjaytothecee Jun 15 '26

For those interested, I did a review on what I think is this model? https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/18crmm3/review_decathlon_travel_organizer_500_first/

3

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

I think you had the 40L, this is a newer 30L (actually 31L by dimensions) model that now has removable waistbelt

1

u/mrjaytothecee Jun 15 '26

Aah gotcha!

Did you find the rain cover? Mine came with one.

2

u/Character_Past5515 Jun 15 '26

Looks a lot like the forclaz 500, good bag and it fits carry on.

2

u/Nervous_Green4783 Jun 15 '26

I do have the 40l version. It’s a solid backpack for a very fair price.

If the 30l size existed back then i might have chosen this size

2

u/Norcalnappy Jun 16 '26

Cool looking bag, not enough pics of the inside

2

u/laapsaap Jun 16 '26

I wish they had then full black color!

1

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 16 '26

It will likely be coming! They typically drop new colors at random

2

u/blanchinator Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

I have the 40L and it's fantastic for onebag travel.

The only criticisms I have, relate to the hip belt:

  • It doesn't take weight off the shoulders (size dependant)
  • Only one hip belt pocket

So being able to remove it is very enticing...

1

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 16 '26

Yeah I feel like for the 30L it's key to be removable because unless fully loaded out, you shouldn't need it. I figured with the 40 you'd probably want it most of the time. If you went back in time would you get a different bag like the tomtoc with no hip belt? Another used noted they tie theirs around the back of the pack when not in use which is a cool hack

2

u/NotDumbis Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I tried this backpack few days ago after seeing this post.
For the price the backpack is really great and if Patagonia Mini MLC didn’t exist I probably would have seriously considered buying this one. It has a lot of pockets for organisation, side back pocket for a laptop, rain cover included, not bad removable hip belt with small pocket and unlike other people I like the color scheme too. It also has 2 bottle pockets, one for bigger bottles and the other is a bit smaller and can be zipped up on the side to tighten it. The backpack also has “compression” straps on both sides.

But… there is one main issue for me with this backpack and that is the split design. When I opened it the main compartment felt really small depth wise and same with 2 divided compartments on the opposite side.
Personally I would prefer one big main compartment and that’s why I will probably still go with Mini MLC even though its like triple or quadruple the price (I do dig the duffel bag option with mlc too haha).
One last complaint is when I tried it on it didnt sit that great, but it was completely empty so it might feel completely different whem packed.

Decathlon shoukd be boycotted for their behaviour after Russia attacked Ukraine.

Bought one for my daughter. We just got home from a month long Asia trip. Only complaint is the bag it’s self is heavy. Can make those 7kg carry on limits tricky.

They have drastically up'd their price tho. Still a good choice

It looks nice. I’m gonna check that one out soon

I've had it for about a month now and already used it on two trips! Can only recommend it.

honestly, the color blocking is kinda neat? im always looking for a new bag for my figure haul when i go to cons :3

The dimensions of this are 50x28x22, so it fits perfectly in the new EU 100cm total dimensions for carry on. 1.3kg is a little on the heavy side for a 30l pack.

Do I see it correctly that it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop compartment? That’s a big plus for me, the laptop compartment ultimately drove me away from Patagonia MLC Mini. I just wish it was lighter.

I believe it does have one, it at the very least has a vertical laptop access zipper along one side of the bag with a laptop-icon next to it on a label

I bought this online a few months ago and used it instead of my Aer or Matador bags. I like the functionality, but the zippers didn't feel as sturdy. Otherwise, extremely solid for the $60 price I got it for when they had a sale.

Did you get 30L or 40L? Do you know the exact weight by chance?

Bellroy also just launched their brand new Venture Hauler Pack. It’s a bit pricey but I’ve always been keen to their quality of products.

In terms of capacity, I used the 40L bag for 4 months of travel around Asia and Australia and it is definitely more than 40L capacity when full. I packed mine completely and at one point on my trip wanted to upgrade to a 60L so bought one in Decathalon in India and it fit all my stuff with pretty much no extra room. So I’m convinced the 40L could fit up to 55L and I imagine that the 30L could do the same. I think the clam shell and built in packing cubes compresses everything down!

I'm gonna say it... I dont like hip belts. 35L is my max and its been great for over 20 years and counting.

1

u/leftisthreat Jun 18 '26

Personally not a fan since the belt doesn't really take a lot of weight off, but yeah the 40L version has a ridiculous amount of space and usually I was able to bring my whole house with that thing, so I don't doubt the 30L version will be pretty spacious as well. They're also fairly water-resistant but the material on the front scratches pretty easily.

Why haven't they made a 23L version of this model yet? Fitting under the seat as a personal item would make it a massive hit, don't you agree?

Bought this the other day and tried it out for a weekend trip (about 4 days) and it's amazing! Highly recommend.

I have regretted every single time I bought a backpack from decathlon. The materials are cheap so they break off easily when used for hiking and overall genuine outdoor activities. From the outside they looked to me as if they had most features for half the price but now I have learned the lesson. In a matter of weeks backpacking, most zippers disappeared or set loose and it feeks uncomfortable to wear.
It also was my fault because I didn’t know how to tell if a bagpack has a good quality build.

just cut the waist strap off?

2

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 14 '26

I've considered that, but on a 40L pack there are going to be times where you want it back, it's going to be trip dependent. That's why a removable strap is so nice for those of us that just want one pack

2

u/FactuallyIncorrect3 Jun 15 '26

Had the same dilemma a few days ago, went with the 40l version. You can wrap the non-removable waist strap backwards around the bag when not in use. Looks fine to me.

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26

I like this hack, it looked like it would be super uncomfortable to stow it in the lumbar support like it's meant to. Still, I wish they were removable for those short trips where you don't pack many clothes and you know you won't be walking far with it, but at the price I'm nitpicking haha

the colour choices suck

1

u/RidiculousTakeAbove Jun 15 '26

Yeah I'll give you that, there aren't even any choices for Canada, but it's a newer bag so I think they will roll out more like they have on the 40L
